We had our first bbq of the year last week-end as well. Ours was not as classy as yours though : we cooked mergez and drank beer.

It's nice that you're passing your vast knowledge on to your son. Also, it was nice of you to let Jane put stuff on the BBQ. I'm sure she appreciated that quite a bit. Finally, dipping the asparagus in mayonaise was horrible. Is that really done over there?
  • SteveR 2 months ago
If it's a good-quality mayonnaise made with free-range eggs, then I don't see why not. I wouldn't serve boiled asparagus with mayonnaise, but if it's been barbequed or deep-fried in batter, then it works really well.

I prefer butter and salt and pepper....maybe garlic butter even.

"In the summer months one of the greatest treats of all is real, proper home-made mayonnaise; a thick mass of unctuous golden ointment, perfect for dipping asparagus into."
-Delia Smith. Are you disagreeing with the sainted Delia, Ed?

Gordon Ramsay (lovely bloke) serves asparagus with mayonnaise at one of his establishments:

I'm a garlic butter person myself. The Mayonaise reminds me of when I went to the home of a college girlfriend who lived in the "country". I was asked if I wanted salad with dinner and it was cut-up iceberg lettuce with about a quart of mayonaise stirred into it.

I would have to disagree with Delia on this.

Suddenly Gordon Ramsay is an ally?

    He's my new best mate.
  • SteveR 2 months ago
Actually, he's a twat. He just happens to be right on this issue.

"that's what happens when you pretend you can cook once a year"

Good stuff. I'm hungry now - especially after seeing those steaks!

I've tried those barbecue bags before - they're certainly convenient, but I think the real man makes the fire as manually as possible!

There's nothing quite so manly as a Pimm's and lemonade. Looked delicious, though I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I referred you to Gordon Ramsay's method of properly preparing asparagus on a grill.

Oh my gahhhd. Did he say "sod it" at :36? That made me laugh so hard, I can't even explain!

And are those really your grills? You've got to be joking. Those look like stools. No self-respecting man would call that a grill.

American BBQ version on the way.
  • hahah agreed. I thought they were stools, I thought you guys were gonna sit on them and have tea.

    apparently you grilled from them...

    ...haha.

Jane certainly was a good sport about this, wasn't she? With all of your manly barbeque posturing and all...
  • Bill 2 months ago
How Jane tolerates the bumbling old fool is beyond me!
  •
  • Bill 2 months ago
We did the same on Sunday, only our asparagus came straight from the garden. Your manly behaviour around the barbeque was a little suspect and the drinks were totally poofy. Whats wrong with cold lager?
  • Scruff_E_Guy 2 months ago
    lemonade isn't a manly drink? Oh....so THAT'S what I've been doing wrong....

  • SteveR 2 months ago
You need to do a clip of a BBQ in which all of that happens.

    mayo on asparagus? really?? gack!
  • SteveR 2 months ago
Try some at your forthcoming BBQ, you won't regret it. Don't forget the Pimms with lemonade, it'll go down a treat with all those butch Texas men.

Funny vid! And thanks for the comment (yes, I know it's English, but it also appears to be quite popular in Germany.) And, I had no idea there was a "marmite" channel... the things you discover on the Internet... ;-)
  • SteveR 2 months ago
I didn't know Marmite was popular in Germany. You learn something new every day.
  • Bill 2 months ago
He didnt say it was popular!
  • SteveR 2 months ago
He said it was "quite popular".

It's true, I did. Although, in reality, I could be totally wrong.

If thats manly behaviour then Im the 4th Dreg!!!!! By the way, my Mum drinks Pimms and lemonade.
  • SteveR 2 months ago
The Dregs are a trio. A 4th Dreg is a contradiction in terms.

I reckon that if your son substitutes pink champagne for tinnies of lager he'll be well on his way to an Honourary MBA (Master of Barbeque Administration)

I love asparagus, but I just can't see the mayonnaise working its way into the equation of a proper bbq. Everything else looks great. Personally, I'd replace the lemonade with maybe a southern sweet iced tea, and switch out the pink champagne with a good Hefeweizen, and bob's your uncle.
