Sleeping Beauty - City lights / Music video

"Ohh so your new song is called City Lights?! I have a great idea for that!"

When I got a call from the band asking me to do a video for their upcoming single I had just recently checked out the many inspirational works of people posting at instructables.com and found my way to the amazing movies made by the japanese light-painting crew PIKAPIKA. Realizing that there was no way we would be able to do it their way (and not much of a point) we came up with our own take on it, have a look and let us know what you think!

WOW i like it. I really like when theyve got their backs to each other and you rotate around them. I can't imagine going through the pain of making a stop motion video like this sync up so his lips move right along with the music. WELL DONE!!!

    Cheers!

Doing the close-up lip syncs was an interesting learning experience. We recorded the singer lip-syncing in real time to parts of the song with a regular dv-camera. Then I removed 14 frames out of 25 for each second and ended up with a 6 frames a second (less exact) lip-sync. Then we had a laptop facing the singer, stepping through the 6f video and with the webcam on he was able to pose in a similar fashion for each still.

Have you had an idea and then you see someone else do it? Dang you! That was very well done. I love it all. It would be great to hear more about how you did this and how many frames you shot and how long this took you.
  • Benjamin Taft 1 year ago
Hah yeah that happens all the time too me, but mostly it just serves as inspiration as long as I can come up with some twist to the idea.

I would say we shot around 1500 frames and used 6 frames a second for most shots, some are 9 frames a second (the rotation ones). I actually put up a step-by-step guide on how we made this video on Instructables.com: instructables.com/id/Animate-with-light/

I realize it leaves out a lot, but feel free to ask if you have any questions. I like your time-lapse video, Hay fire.

geez. absolutely incredible. did you guys shoot inside for a lot of this?
  • Benjamin Taft 1 year ago
Hey thanks! We did two full days of shooting in a blackbox, it made things a lot easier having a controlled environment to work in.

Love it. Various ideas formed together with the art of light. Geez, I wish I had the time or a camera to do some of that with.
