5. "Combatography" Afghanistan in 4K RED ONE - HD
1 year ago

Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2008 on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (using some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048, almost 5x full 1080P High Definition.

It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad.

Jason Wingrove of FXGuide recently interviewed me regarding this footage and my thoughts on advancing this quality for Combat Zone acquisition. It is episode #015 here: fxguide.com/redcentre There have been a couple magazine articles as well, High Definition #31 (Aug08), Government Video (Aug08) and Videography magazines (Aug08), and DV Magazine (Sep08).

Camera = RED ONE
Lens = Angenieux 20-120 T2.9
Music = Klaus Badelt - Rescue Dawn

Nice shots. What lenses were used?

Opsie.....blush. Knew it had to be a zoom. How is the 2.9/Red in low light?
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
The shots of the F-15 and the Airman taxiing the helicopter are probably the lowest you'd want to go (the vingnetting on the F15 shot is natural--not done in post), and I feel the grain was mostly manageable at that point. Lots of mountains around made "magic hour" last a while and I was only able to film approaching dusk anyway. I've seen some pretty low prices on this particular lens, and though I wouldn't reccomend it for "run-n-gun" like I was doing (it's huge and heavy) I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a personal film. I liked the look it captures.

Mr. Glory great idea! I also feel the same way about getting HD quality footage of you guys as well. If you dont mind me asking is the red your?
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
Yes, I am in the National Guard, my civilian career is filming.
  •
  • Brandon Vaidean 1 year ago
thats awesome! have you got results with what you are trying to accomplish with the HD in the military?
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
The hard part has been finding the "right" person who's in any position to consider this opportunity. Just recently I've been interviewed by a couple magazines and that has led to more exposure to the right folks in a round-about way so we'll see if that right person takes notice. In the end there's probably more opportunity to do this as a civilian photo-journalist, but I don't think that is the right way when it's all said and done. I think this should be something done from the service-members perspective, there's a lot coming from the outside already. Most of what is done by troops is on very low quality cameras and that's why I want to get a special team to travel around capturing history on the medium it deserves.

What file format did you upload this to Vimeo?

The clarity of the video is amazing... moreso, than standard (1440x720) HD uploaded that I have seen on video. Does the Red One make that big of difference even when reduced to a codec that makes it "uploadable" to Vimeo?
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
I uploaded a 1280x720 (letterboxed from 1280x640) H.264. But yes, it's more a factor of the RED footage being simply that amazingly clear/smooth when focused correctly. You should check out something downrezzed to 1080P (try redrelay.net) for an even more impressive display of the RED's capabilities. Here's a still at 1080, a little soft focus-wise but you'll get an idea of the smooth look to it even at low light: img359.imageshack.us/img359/262/allsquiet1080kg3.jpg

Great idea, love the images, especially the everyday stuff. I'm a big fan of everyday life and situation and people that get overlooked. To have this at such an amazing quality (I can't believe you are shoot video at the same quality as my Nikon). Hope you get to shoot a lot more, this is gonna be a great document for later, and my guess is not that much later.

So, is this camera a digital camera or a camcorder? I have been searching for the name because the footage is amazing I want one for myself. At the start you say you used a Canon "..." and then in the description you said you used a RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera? I take it, that this camera is not an actual camera that takes still pictures, but a camera for recording. Please explain, I want to know which one you used to film this video. It is excellent by the way.
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
Ah, you can find the information here: red.com/ Essentially, when I went to Afghanistan the first time in 2003, I brought a Canon XL1 and filmed the images you see at the beginning of the video. I returned to Afghanistan in 2008 and filmed on the RED, the difference in sizes is the direct difference in resolution between the cameras so that you can see the immense quality jump, and possibilities that the RED brings to the table. The RED is a digital *beyond high definition* camera that shoots on 35MM Cinema lenses (PL Mount) but at a relatively low price for the quality.

    Very beautiful.

What was your editing-workflow? Did you transcode to ProRes, did you edit the reference-files from the camera or did you convert your footage with RedCine?

I am still trying to wrap my head around that part of RED.
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
Thank you, this was edited directly off the 2K high res proxies/reference's in Final Cut on a 8-Core Mac tower. From the proxies I rendered a ProRes master and then did the various web/dvd compressions from there. The first three small clips that I also have here on Vimeo were edited while I was in Afghanistan on a MacBook Pro 2ghz Core Duo with 1GB Ram. We now have access to an Assimilate Scratch system and I will try a full quality color/conform at some point, but I am very pleased at the quality of the proxies already.

Incredible shots! especially the end shot. I'm just a hack, but I apire to shoot at your level. I put together some footage I shot at the Air Force Theater Hospital in Balad in 2007. It was my fourth trip out under OEF/OIF and definately my most memorable. I worked there as a member of the Trauma Team. I'd be honored if you'd check it out.

really moving images...my younger brother is in the service and is currently on his 2nd tour in Iraq and i'm definitely going to forward this to him...he and all service men and women would surely appreciate your footage and your efforts to make this the standard for the military...plus you may be the first person to shoot with the RED in Afghanistan? thanks for posting
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
Hey, thanks, and best wishes for your brother. Slow progress with the military per usual, still trying to find the right person in the right place to spike interest in a small team, but gaining traction with a lot of folks in the field already who are excited about the possibilities. P.S. Really like your style, your Death Valley shot was the first clip I fav'd here.
  •
  • Amazing man... Truly amazing. Red One all the way. Can't wait for the Epic. =D

I truly hope to see more videos from Afghanistan and Iraq shot with the RED ONE, I think the soldiers deserve to have what they fight for remembered in quality worth their time and sacrifice.

    =D

Fantastic. I recently took delivery of my Red One, and also have the 20-120 Angeniuex 2.9- although lucky for me, the mount turned out to be a BNCR- not PL, so I moved to it's lighter, and even cheaper cousin, the 25-250mm! Next week I'll be runnin and gunnin around the race track at Atlanta, and I just want to thank you for not leaving me alone in the world of heavy lens haulin' gluttons for punishment.
Ditto on all your thoughts of capturing real life in this high quality- I think ultimately that's what this red revolution is about.
Last weekend I captured a very different war- a local re-enactment of a Civil War battle- reckin I'll have to post that footage now too.

Be safe and enjoy, great shots.

Amazing Footage!!! I would love to see a write up on the process you went through to get this footage on the web.

The dynamic range of your footage is amazing.

I also love your choice of music, it adds so much to the video.
  • MrGlory 1 year ago
Thanks, the process was pretty simple actually, Edit RED Quicktime Proxies in FinalCut>Render a ProRes Master>Take ProRes into Compressor>H.264 Compressed Web Files>upload to Vimeo.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about any of those steps that I can flesh out.
  • Gary Regan 1 year ago
Thanks for the reply, I am trying to get my church to purchase a Red One camera for their production work. They are currently looking at a high end Sony HD camera that would cost just as much. The only thing we else need would be a high end Mac.

    Stay safe!!!!!!

  • USMCG0811 10 months ago
Great stuff! However, I didn't see a lick of combat. As a former infantryman, you might wanna change to title... not really fitting.
  • MrGlory 10 months ago
I mixed the words "Combat Zone" and "Cinematography" (which according to Google is the first time that's been done). I was only able to film for 4 days with the RED on this deployment, and the point of the presentation is that Combat ZONE footage can now be filmed at historical quality, and with the new RED Scarlet camera, actual firefights can be filmed at a resolution commensurate with the time (I'm headed back overseas soon and hope to bring one with me). There's plenty of explosion and gunfire footage to be found on the internet, but not much of "slice of life" footage of the regular life beyond run-n-gun shots used for news blurbs (in other words, what footage do you have to show your grandchildren of your participation in history other than low res handycam footage?) that keeps folks attention. I am still trying to get a team put together to film at this level of quality for History's sake, not just to film action for action's sake.

  • JK 9 months ago
Really awsome your thinking about the future in this way. Unbelieble that nobody had done that yet. I wish we would have the scarlet allready. than I would have givvin' a fixed lense one to a friend of me. who will go end of februari to Afghanistan for the second time with his armoured infantry division. He's a patria driver which would be kind of a great opportunity.

Guess I'll have to wait for my own deployment. but that will take a while as I have to learn for Luitenant construction engineer...damnit. so I hope you'll get a good team together....wish you all the best.

Btw I hate how some people talk about this war. I can't stand that some people let media influence there opinions to the point where it is disrespecting all the good work that the army does! I hope that's something we can change too (by not having true media personal but real army staff). It's more a political thing. I always explain these people that they'd only understand if they where a citizen of the country itself.
  • MrGlory 9 months ago
Hey, thanks for the comment. I agree about people talking out of hand. I make it a point in my life not to grandstand about issues or situations that I do not have first hand experience with. For some reason people feel better about themselves when they fire off all sorts of jibber jabber without any experience to back it.

Unfortunately when all they're doing is regurgitating what they heard elsewhere, they're not part of the equation in any way, and don't earn the respect of the people required to make a difference.

When others say "well I watched..." or "I heard..." or "I read..." I prefer to say "I DID."
