Mayor Kathy Taylor learned recently that Tulsa taxpayers are subsidizing 90 percent of the cost to euthanize animals from surrounding communities at the Tulsa animal shelter.

Cheap fees, morale issues for animal control officers and avoiding public scrutiny are some of the reasons other shelters bring their condemned animals to Tulsa.

Tulsa charges $1 per animal for euthanasia and cremation. Those services cost the city $10.

In April, 223 animals were delivered to and destroyed at Tulsa’s Shelter.
