This time in one take Sanyo Xacti HD1000 straight from camerafile 1280x720 60fs. My friends (very polite but very poor) from a township called Khula (sheds without water and electricity) outside St.Lucia KwaZuluNatal South Africa. This group performs for tourist on restaurant terraces in St.Lucia and here at the arrivaldeck from a hippo boattour on St.Lucia River at sunset. They sing and swing really great just like the other famous Zulugroup Ladysmith Black Mombazo this music style is called Isicathamiya. Made famous by Paul Simon. They rehearse a lot and we hope to make them famous also. Help them please if you can. We also produced this time a CD for them and next time a DVD also for selling to the tourists.
Please also search for "Khula Happy Singers" on YouTube for our one year old clip as promo for a great and very affordable B&B in St.Lucia. Absolutely one of the best spots to spent a few weeks in Zululand, close to the best diving spots SodwanaBay, Elephant coast, birds (Trompetbills), monkeys, wild Hippo's, Crocks and HluHluwe Imfolozi wildpark.

    Wow! Stunning!
One of the best Xacti clips I saw.
It shows the great potential of this little cam.
    Any filter used?
  • Jan van der Meer 2 months ago
Thank you , no filter used, I was amazed also about this great quality.

    Supplement:
In the meantime Jan and me also are using the Sony Vegas Pro 8 for editing the xacti files, works smooth and perfect, even with low-speed computers.

Cute cam, good sound! Shame its so shaky / wobblie
  • Jan van der Meer 2 months ago
True, but this little cam is only 300 gramms, next time I´ll connect a string and stand on it or use a monopod or steadicam. But this take was not planned at all! It just shows that withut any help it is reasonable ok!
  • Maarten Toner 2 months ago
only 300 gram? Well nice job in that case, its a perfect moment well captured.

Amazing colors and the audio was surprisingly good if that was straight off the camera. Congrats to you and the group on a great video.

Thank You Ray and others, Normally I use the fantastic "TomRig" (search google) DPA stereo mic. 4063BM. Studio quality! But believe me this time I just used the needle mics on the LCD door of the Xacti! Fortunately it was hardly windy!

    Fantastic... Indeed!
The sound quality is actually pretty amazing!
Beautiful sunset with your subjects offset by the light-colored grasses... really cool!

    Thanks for the post!

Jan - great shot - BTW. I have successfully edited the Xacti HD1 720P with Vegas 8 pro, it plays pretty straight in that software.
  • Jan van der Meer 2 months ago
Well Bo with my Vegas 8 it jitters stop and go all the time. Hope we can work this out. I tried the Sanyo editor enclosed in the box Ulead DVD movie factory 5 for Sanyo, but its so simple cant even make inserts and I also like to burn a BluRay DVD.

    "Fantastic" is the word.

One of the videos I liked best on Vimeo - great music, great presence, great background. Congrats to the group and the producer. I hope they stay happy as they look.

Curious about the meaning of the song.

    hi jan

    nice shot really

there is a thing i would ask to you

i see background not fine. especially 1.50 and follow , sky and water are really bad in pixels

just would like to know if this is due to compression or present as well in raw from cam?

i 'm in the mood of getting one as for absolute portability, but , browsing shots around , i've seen little problems such as pixels and focus hunting

could you tell me you sincere opinion about it

    thanks
  • PeterGman 2 months ago
As seen in this here browser, the background -- water, sky, grasses -- all of it -- is rendered with terrific colorimetry and gamma levels.

    Sound quality: beautiful.
Wish it were shot with an image stabilization contraption, because this piece is so worthy of it!

Hello Core As many others can tell you this cheap little pocket HD cam is fantastic for times you didn't bring your bigger/better cams. And for Vimeoclips this one gives better 1280x720 results. Better than what I get after coversions for Vimeo with our bigger better quality HD cams! So if you like highest quality on your big Full HD LCD flatscreen at home go for the HD Sony's or Canons. If you like the best HD results on Vimeo go for this Sanyo Xacti HD1000 only proper editing is still poor.

I'll show you soon what I did with this little 300 gramms HD camera on top of a boom with contraweight! Great looking crane shots!

Watching that made me feel really happy :) I'm in an African choir and seeing how these songs are meant to be performed is very inspirational.

One of the best videos I've ever seen on Vimeo, probably on the internet. I also quite like the shaky feel to it - I think some of the charm would be lost if this was too slick or 'professional' looking.

Ok, so this video clip is the reason that I bought an HD1000 for myself. I was just floored seeing for the first time. Everything just works together so well. This seems like one of those "moments" that only happens once in a while. If you had taken time to tweak this or that or hunt down a stabilizer or any of those kinds of things, the moment would have been lost. This clip is just a great example of how a one-shot video can have so much impact. Great job!

This video actually made me close my decision on getting the HD1000...I just wanted to ask if you boost the colors in post or on the manuel setting in the camera? And ive been looking for that Tomrig and B&H doesn't seem to sell it so i was wondering if they still even made them? Thanks alot your videos really are truly one of a kind.
  • Jan van der Meer 2 months ago
Thank you! This clip had no special camera settings just streight from the SD HC 8GIG card to Vimeo! The Tomrig and TomrigPro is only available in our Centre, mail us please hdv@live.nl

That's such a nice video! I were in Reiger Park and I had the chance to assist to some of their ceremonies such as a sunday's mass, and a wedding. Their songs were so beautiful and sticky. Shame that I only had a Panasonic TZ-3 PHOTO camera. The thing recorded in 720x480 in raw video and I only had 2gigs of memory...I only could get very short videos :(
Even worst, for the sunday's mass, the battery was dead alread T.T
BTW, I also came to meet so poor but so nice people. Not having almost anything, they wouldn't mind giving their houses for you to sleep and staying with them. I felt so honoured that they invited us to a wedding. I have a short video (if anyone wants to see), but the overall quality (even the editing) is REALLY poor.

Thank you so much for sharing this Jan. Its really humbling to see talents such as this in their true stage performance. Not only do we hear and see that they're radiantly happy, you feel it in their soul. Their sincerity to their performance, the joy they bring despite the fact, the dance, the hope, its as real as it can get. Life's true rhythm. THIS also clearly demonstrates your experience with videography. For a cam that fits a pocket, you've taken HD1000 to heights that should be compensated by Sanyo!! But you're also granted gods given light during the golden hour which helps tremendously. I'll make it a plan to visit Global-DVC in Zandvoort maybe pick up the CD there. And I'm definitely curious what the itenerary is like for Feb 2009.

Btw I'm sure you meant to refer the Khula Happy Singers to Ladysmith Black Mambaso instead of Mombasa. But I'm often confused with Mombasa as well after visiting it in Kenya's Coast.
  • Jan van der Meer 1 month ago
Thank you so much for your reply and all others, yes I'm very very happy for this group to help them a little in popularity and this medium gives me a change to do so and show people their happiness.

Whenever someone wants to come with us to do some more videopromo's and docs. for these people is highly welcome! (Even visit a Sangoma! See Picasa photolink on top page) We will go again febr/march 2009 again please drop me a line if you want more info : studio@Global-DVC.NL.

And sorry and thank you, but changed Mombasa into MombaZo this is the spelling on their albums!

It's always moving for me as a composer to see people using the power of music to escape from certain realities and move to different planets.

    That was a touching experience.
