See all Show me
I'm providing live visuals tonight for a drum and bass night at Galapagos (a venue here in Brooklyn). I've spent the last two weeks completely overhauling my live visual software to get almost everything to be processed on the GPU. I then used the newfound speed to add some extra toys to the patch. I was delighted to find out that when I captured the rendered scene back to a texture (so that I could process the entire frame before rendering again) I had created a feeback loop. Everything is able to be processed normally, but if I set the erase color to be completely transparent, the feedback becomes visible. This was a short sample I recorded to show a friend the effect.

If you're in the ny area and are free tonight (Tuesday May 20th) you should come out. The event lasts from 10pm-4am and is completely free! It should be a good time. Directions are linked below.

Erik - this is even cooler than the feedback thing we saw at Spark - and that one was louder!

    Agreed!

Wow, what does it feel like to make a quantum leap in visual awesomeness?

aw, you're too kind sir. This patch has helped me learn a lot about processing on the GPU and has opened up a world of possibilities.

When are you going to let me see some of your processing wizardry?

I'm a little video shy at the moment, but here's a preview

Wow! That's gorgeous! Do you have any patches or code posted?
  • Bryan Teoh plus 1 year ago
thanks! I don't have any patches or code posted yet. I wrote my first batch of shaders for this patch, but they only really do some basic manipulations of alpha channels...and for the most part those were modified versions of what is already distributed with jitter. Aside from that I made pretty heavy use of Vade's v001 shaders and borrowed ideas liberally from Andrew Benson's Jitter Cookbook series.

That's helpful. I'm pretty new and am hoping the week long Max class I'm taking in July will help. The cookbook is still a little over my head. I'm still working my way through the tutorials.

a word of warning, the jitter tutorials are fairly incomplete compared to the awesomeness of the max/msp tuts. Unfortunately the help patchers for each of the jitter objects also don't help much. After you get through the tutorials you'll probably want to read through the opengl Orange book and Red book (which I'm slowly trying to work through now) and spend a whole lot of time on the jitter mailing list. Also, get into slab processing and shaders as soon as possible. It'll make your life a lot easier.

  • Bryan Teoh plus 1 year ago
thanks maria. I'll be doing live video and audio at the warper party June 26th at supreme trading, July 5th at Stain bar, July 31st at Karma Lounge (video only) and August 15th at Monkeytown. I unfortunately don't have anything else lined up at Galapagos at the moment.

also, the audio isn't mine in this particular video. This is Pan Sonic.

Soon. I've talked to Robert a few times about it... they seem to be gearing up slowly (which is probably smart)
