    Fantastic style.

It makes me feel odd typing this comment.

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys. I'm new to this here website and looking forward to posting a few more projects, I hear the community is really good here. (Which is ironic to say as a comment to this particular animation).

In the mean time I might try to upload a new version of this one... the compression kinda sucks.

is this a digital character or a model?
  •
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
    Hey Alex,
Its actually a 3d model. Wanted to get a stopmotiony look with it, I'm somewhat happy with it but I think next time to fully realize the aesthetic I need more movement.
  • Stevo Welsh 1 year ago
yeah probably use like every 3 frames or something depending on how much movement is in the shot.
it was really good by the way!

hehe. wow. wonderfully haunting. great ending.

brilliant concept, somehow it looks like the film that I just finished (not online yet). can I what was the model made of?
  •
  • walt 1 year ago
i think your use of slow frame rate helped detach us from the character sadly.

awesome, this was so original !! loved it.

    Reza:
The piece was actually all CG so I modeled it using Zbrush and rendered with Maya.
    Walt:
Thanks for the feedback. I was experimenting with the style and don't feel that I really nailed it. Next time perhaps I will make the movement a bit smoother.
    Theo:
Thanks I played the cello myself (after only playing cello for 2 months I needed to overflow it with reverb to cover up my mistakes!).
  •
  • Rootclip 1 year ago
I really loved the cello at the beginning. I would have never guessed you'd only been playing 2 months. It was eerily haunting and a perfect match for this video.

Nice job on the animation, too. I can't wait to see more!

it was very haunting. loved it.
  •
  • Excellent. The music, as novice as you say it is, created a nice, chilling, Brothers Quay feeling.
  •
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Well to be fair, I have been playing guitar for 12 years, so transitioning to the cello may have been a bit easier. Thanks for all the nice comments.

Wow. This will haunt me! Very unsettling character, and a very queasy atmosphere you created. The scratchy effects - is that something you added afterward? Aftereffects? Equivalent? Really nice work.
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Yeah, I put the rotoscoping in with After Effects, you can paint on the layers frame by frame. Thanks for the comments!

A realy dark vision and a depressing solution....Its got a bigger meaning, but everybodys got to find his own clue (which is propably a bit to narrowed). I like the style and looking forward to your next project.
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
thanks, I should have something new to post in the next week or so... unforunately as I shop it around festivals I can only post an exerpt from the new on.

Yes! Maya for the win! Good job man...the part where it goes "It is O.K. I am here" is the best part, in my opinion, because the violin kicks in and that sound effect from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre kicks in haha =D Anyways, great stuff. I do alot of maya and zbrush work too, but im not finished with all of it! Take a look at my really short "The Escape" animation, Im turning it into a short film soon.

    Awesome job!

  • Wow.. the ending was creepy. I loved the scratching effects though!

I love the aesthetic. It reminds me alot of those Crimson Room type flash games.
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Wow, I had never heard of that game before so I went and checked it out. totally awesome / hilarious. "There is nothing strange there"..."It is a stale CD player".
  •
  • Bre Niebel 1 year ago
Hey! That was awesome! Was the character a physical model that you put in a digital space?
At 2:11 you used the sound effect from chainsaw massacre. HAhaah!
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Thanks man, its all CG. Modeled in Zbrush, I love that program. Its amazing how distinctive that Texas Chainsaw Massacre sound is... sends chills.
  • Bre Niebel 1 year ago
Yeah I know, certain sound effects are so recognizable. Wow, I wish I had Zbrush, I've used it before but not for a long time. Did you completely model the character in Zbrush, or did you model it in Maya first and then import it to Zbrush and fine-tune it? It looks so real, like I could almost touch it! I bet it had a million polys!
I'm new to vimeo, but I'll have some work up really soon!
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Awesome, I look forward to seeing some of your work. It did have a million polys! The character was built entirely in Zbrush from the beginning then rendered out in maya using displacements, check out zbrush.info for some tutorials. I'm new to vimeo as well and it seems like a great community here!
  • Bre Niebel 1 year ago
Yeah I love it!!! I wrote down about a page of notes for uploading video in HD. So I hope I'm all set. I'm currently unemployed after being laid off and I hope to find a job in my field (animation/special effects). I think showing off my animation reel in high quality will be great. I really didn't want to upload it to youtube, blah.
I didn't realize you have a website too! I need to get one of those myself. I'll have to check it out!
  • Bre Niebel 1 year ago
Thanks for the Zbrush info. The next time I ever get a chance to use it I will know what to do!
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Cool, yeah I love having my stuff up in HD. I'm about to update my website so check it out in a few days. Good luck out there on the job market. I will be hitting it soon myself.
  •
  • Amazing, I loved the creepy feel of it. Looking forward to more.

Cheers, I have a new animation that I'll be posting soon. Keep an eye out

I loved it. Almost wished it was longer but you said everything you needed to say in it which is perfect.
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
And here I thought I was being over indulgent with the editing. Thanks!
  • Marsha 1 year ago
I thought about this today at work..would you believe it? lol and I think the story actually could be longer..that would make it more satisfying. I think something like..he hears the response..and you don't show what it is yet..you see the words..then another scene where he gets happy..puts flowers on the sill or something. THEN..he messages a second time..ok THEN you show the other machine..maybe he would ask another question and the machine only gives a robotic answer so THIS makes the creature shudder and then get sad...again..??
    just a thought. :P
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Ah, you're right there was room to expand this and make it a bit more dramatic! As far as the ending goes I had really wanted the viewer to know it is a machine but not the character. I like the idea of the viewer feeling a different emotion than the character.

You know those news stories about instant messenger bots that chat up lonely guys on the internet only to track them down and steal their money... While those guys are getting chatted to I'm sure they are really excited and yet it is a computer program talking to them. Maybe in the end for this character it doesn't matter that it is a machine if he doesn't find out?

Great job, cool camera work and nice post processing effects. Good to see people using 3d graphics in a new way. Simple idea, well told.
  • Ryan Fedyk 1 year ago
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback. I hope to expand on this type of aesthetic in the future.

i started to feel just like that character as i was typing this comment. visually, it's great atmosphere/mood you've created. it has an equal impact on a psychological level for sure. nice vid!

Any works, written of visual, that inspired you to make this, or was it purely out of the box (read: from your head)?
