5. Test of the Platinum…
This is a test film using a Royal Lens Platinum 0.2x and royal-lens.com on the Sony HC1 camera. No awards to be had for my test!
The lens was not designed to be used underwater, but behind a wide angle port it gives an amazing 180 degree view, wider than any maufacturers on the market produce.

Problems using this lens are as follows:

I had a few technical problems using this lens. The lens is silver, and needs to be painted black, as silver reflections can be seen in the glass port.
Next was the extreme vinyetting. I must Zoom in a bit more than I did to remover the cut-off. I did zoom in a bit, but still had problems. This was not seen in the viewfinder when filming..
The lens was designed for extreme sports, but It was the perfect lens underwater.
More films to follow. This is a great lens, and I will be using it more on projects this summer..
Thanks to Freediver Sara Campbell and the dive team at Delta P for their help.

What casing did you use to get the hc1 underwater?
And you don't see the vignette in the viewfinder, that's because it always records more than you see. This is called the 'tv safe zone', and you won't see it if you put it on tv, but on the computer you will see it.

I zoomed in, but not enought. I used the Royal Lens Platinum 0.2x and royal-lens.com

This makes me want to swim again,... I haven't for like about 2 years, I love to glide over the poolfloor like that!
I miss diving too! Still haven't got my diving license thingy.

What's the song by the way?

Just like looking into a cristal bowl. Great visuals.
What surpises me is that the outside lensring seems to float as well (as mentioned by John K, is that the optical stabilizer that does it?). It gives almost a 3D effect to the cristal bowl...:)

Wow! Rebreathers are definitely the elegant way for dive videos. They're the definite sense to the word 'frogmen'! But I think I'd panic if I suddenly lose my dive buddy being so used to bubble tracks. I'm curious about the audio if you did capture that too. It'd be much more quieter or do you hear breathings?

Great capture indeed. Where was this?
  • Dan Burton 5 months ago
rebreather are the only way 2 go.
quite, no bubbles, and long bottom times.... 1-6 hours or more.
great for fish, and keeping warm.
  • rastAsia 5 months ago
I can certainly see that! I'd have to do a course on that if I wanna experience it. But woahh... 1-6 hrs?? Curious how you work out the allowable bottom-time with rebreathers.

And which dive site was this?

Loved this shoot Dan. The clarity was awesome. Made me miss diving. If I can find someone to build me a housing for the X1 I'll finally get to shoot in the water. You made it yourself?

  • Dan Burton 5 months ago
I am hoping to build a x1 or x3 soon, when i upgrade from my Z1. Did you have a Z1 before?

you should zoom in a lil bit and it'll cut out the black in the corners and then just back up from the subject slightly
    but thats just my opinion
