1. Tenori-on Meets Kyma
In order to tap the real power of Yamaha's new Tenori-on, it helps to pair it with external equipment capable of producing more satisfying sounds than the somewhat lackluster soundset included with the Tenori-on itself. In this video, no internal Tenori-on sounds were used whatsoever. Tenori-on is functioning purely as a sequencer with external equipment, including advanced sound-shaping from Kyma and analog synthesis from Alesis Andromeda and Dave Smith's Prophet '08. Sequencer data coming from Tenori-on is processed in Ableton Live (utilizing midi scale and chord filters, as well as injecting some generative randomness) before reaching Kyma, Andromeda, and Prophet '08.

Thanks for the nice comments! Glad you enjoyed it! I mixed externally before bringing it into Ableton for final mastering. Although I didn't use a stereo enhancer per se, a few external effects helped widen the stereo field. More specifically, I judiciously applied unusual reverbs and pitch shifting/delay effects from Kyma and an Eventide processor to selected tracks. Kyma and Eventide excel at this sort of sound sculpting. Similar effects could probably be achieved using SoundToys' Native Effects plugins, which I like a great deal, but to my ears even SoundToys' high quality plugins don't offer the same sheen as the hardware effects available on Kyma and Eventide. Once it was captured in Ableton, I then compressed the entire mix with Focusrite's Liquid Mix, using an emulation of Empirical Labs' much vaunted Distressor.

You're going to laugh when I tell you what I'm using for mixing: a Mackie CR1604-VLZ! The mixer is obviously the weak link in my signal chain, but I make up for Mackie's weaknesses by applying another Liquid Mix emulation, which models the characteristics of a Manley Massive Passive 6-band EQ, to the entire mix in Ableton. Since the Mackie neither colors the sound much nor adds any significant noise, its lack of character can be corrected in the final mix. If you're more into Solid State Logic, Liquid Mix also has a great emulation of the SL4000. Do these emulations replace the hardware they're modeled after? No, but they come damn close--as close as convolution technology can get you.

From what I hear, something big may be coming from Symbolic Sound in the near future, perhaps as early as this summer.

I don't understand how Liquid Mix is able to emulate dynamic systems, but what I do know is that it often makes things sound a little better. I think its impact is most effective when subtle, but one can also do unsubtle things with it. For instance, I love to slam drums with the Empirical Labs Distressor emulation! The biggest challenge is choosing which compressor or EQ emulation to use. Do you want to try an Avalon VT737SP, Manley Slam, or Summit TLA100A for compression? Would you fancy a Neve 1073, Chandler Limited EMI Passive, or Manley Massive Passive for EQ? It's gear slut heaven.
