48. Smooth Cam Test

This is my first crack at trying out the "smooth cam" filter from Shake. I'm a complete newbie at it (Shake) and need all the help and hints I can get.

One thing I notice right off the bat with this is the "ghosting" or "blending" like glitches that happen through this clip. If you download my original file it's much more clear to see.

I assume that they are the times where the camera moves or jolts the most in the shot, probably me taking harder steps or something. Is there a way to remedy this?

i've come across this same problem too, i think it's the shot not being completely sharp. you can change this by having a higher shutter speed to make sure all the frames are more crisp.
  • Hmmm....I'm not entirely sure that's right. I mean, I'm sure it's part of it but really I think it's a matter of how steady the shot is in the beginning. I think the best results would be if you were to shoot with an actual steady or glidecam and THEN apply the smoothcam filter to stablize it even more. I know it kind of defeats the purpose of using the filter but the steadier the shot to begin with, the less work and more steady the final shot will look in the end...

I didn't even know you could have shutter speeds on camcorders. Is this mostly in professional camcorders?

if your motion is too smooth, smoothcam will not notice it, and not take out the bumps. they need to be actual bumps to get smoothed. most cams have shutter, pro cams have a little more control over it.

No, smoothcam should be able to take are of it since it definitely can smooth out of shakier footage. Increasing the shutter speed should help.
  • Ok how bout this then, which method of smoothing a shot would you consider a better workflow with Final Cut Pro. The filter right within Final Cut? or the smooth cam node from within Shake?

I tried using the one right from within Final Cut but it took FOREVER to analyze. While it was analyzing I jumped into Shake and finished the shot and plopped it right back into my timeline.

yeah what you do in rinal cut is FIRST export the clip as the ProRes format (.mov) then reload it into final cut, once its back it the smoothcam within final cut will run heeaapps faster. hope that helped.

Smooth Cam in FCP takes "forever to analyze" because it's not simply analyzing the clip in your timeline, it's analyzing the entire original clip. In other words, if you capture 3 minutes of footage and drop a 20 second section of that clip into your timeline, Smooth Cam will analyze the entire original 3 minute clip.

    Why? I have no idea.

The workaround is to export the section you want and re-import it.
  • Even exporting the portion of the clip I want seems to take forever. I think I had a 13 second clip of 1080i HDV footage and I ended up quitting out of final cut.

you can actually stop the process of the conversion, not sure where, but it's in the manual. I usually send the clip to motion to smooth cam it. easier to control the process and you don't need to render the entire clip, just that cut.
  • I'll try that

I have a cheapo JVC miniDV cam and it has shutter adjustment ;)

However I use this filter for Premiere cs3 called 2d3 steadymove pro and it does the same thing, if you want good quality shoot footage to be stabilized in HD and then render it out as SD after stabilizing it and you wont see a degradation of quality.
  • Thanks for the tip
