I received my Brevis35 yesterday and managed to find some time today to shoot some footage with it and my A1.

Lens used is a Nikon 50mm that I borrowed from my wife, Katie, who also kindly agreed to appear in this video. Well .... I told her afterwards that I'd be posting it on here ;)

I'm quite happy with the results.

Let me know your thoughts/feedback/critique.

Music: Beck "The Golden Age"

p.s. colour correction and vignette done in post.

Nice Job. Great shots in there. Are you saying that you had to correct vignetting from the use of the 50mm lens?

I just got my Brevis back from getting it upgraded to MP.1. Once I get a decent NLE I am gonna post on this site too.
  • Matt E 6 months ago
No, I added a vignette in post. The 50mm lens doesn't cause vignetting.

First of all, I'm so jealous! Second, this is a great video Matt; music, composition, everything. What made you go with the Brevis over the competition, like the M2 or the Letus?
  • Matt E 6 months ago
I think the M2 is more expensive than the Brevis and the Letus. I read a lot of reviews and overall they seemed more favourable towards the Brevis. Plus, there's so much information on the Cinevate site plus their forums etc ...

The other thing that tipped me towards the Brevis was a lot of the people I look up to and admire use it. With the exception of Philip Bloom I guess ... he seems to favour the Letus and his stuff is mindblowingly good.
  • Stephen Lewis 6 months ago
Interesting, I had been looking mostly at the Letus, but I'll look into the Brevis too, it obviously produces beautiful images! :)

Damn wish I could have got the Brevis :) Looks a little bit better then the RNG35. Now atleast I can see how different they are, for example you added vignette, I get that automaticaly :P Some good test footage. Looks like we both like to feature our loved ones :P

    Love it! Nice work!

Hmmm Brevis or Letus? More thought needed now.
  • Peter Szilveszter 6 months ago
I would like to ad to your list the V3 of the RNG35 simply looks amazing it will be released in July. From seeing the prototype footage that it beats both brevis and Letus and is about 1/3 cheaper.

Don't forget, along with the beautiful images from the Brevis...the upgrade-ablity is simply priceless with the way adapters are changing lately. Also, I loved the fact that you can swap out the imaging elements too. That is what made me go for the Brevis. :)
  • Matt E 6 months ago
Yeah, I'm looking to attach it to a HV30 as well so the swappable imaging elements will come in super handy.

I just became proud owner of brevis. It's more expensive than letus. and there are reasons why. carbon fibre chasis, MP controllable oscillator, interchangable diffuser, completely customizable, inbuilt rechargable batteries, modularized unit. overall way better deal for $236 extra. Hats off to the construction and design.
  • Matt E 6 months ago
Yeah, when I pulled it out of the case I was really impressed with the solid construction of the Brevis - it just feels tough.

You must be happy with your new adapter Matt.
Brevis, Letus, RedRock or other, I stay undecided... everyone states the one he owns is the best :)
I'll have to save some money.
That last shot: nice. It inspires me to try some B&W experiments.
  • Matt E 6 months ago
    Hey Pierre,

I think all the adapters are pretty cool. I've seen some awesome footage from all 3 of the ones you mentioned. Mostly I guess it comes down to which is the best ... but also personal preference - i.e. I prefer Canon cameras like the XL2 and the XH-A1 and I really don't like the Sony cameras. That doesn't mean the Sonys aren't good cameras - I just prefer the Canons.

Guys like Philip Bloom are producing mind-blowing stuff with the Letus adapters so I think it more comes down to how you use the tools you're given a lot of the time.
  • Pierre 5 months ago
"it more comes down to how you use the tools you're given" is the statement I was thinking of. Much appreciate your objective answer. And yes, there are canon guys and sony guys :)

Your using the Canon XHA1, right? And a Brevis35? Correct me if im being an idiot, but isnt this XHA1 a camera without interchangable lenses? Im interested in this Canon XHA1 you see, Amazing video By the way.
  • Matt E 5 months ago
    Hey Sunny,

    Thanks!

You're correct. The A1 doesn't have interchangeable lenses.

The Brevis35 attaches to the front of the A1 and then you attach a 35mm lens to the Brevis.

  • Sunny Leatham 5 months ago
Oh wow, In that case this camera is definetly what i need! Thank you for such a quick reply!

Hey man, i'm looking into getting an adapter within the next 2-3 days. I love the look of the brevis and being able to go run and gun with it is awesome! NO rails is fine with me. So i was debating, either letus or redrock, then i came to redrock or brevis. So if possible can you tell me how it is using the xh-a1 and brevis as i do also have an xh-a1. I think the footage is amazing. You added the vignetting yourself right? how's the dof? please e-mail if you have time and you can letting me know how this equipment works together. Thanks man!

I'm not an expert on the 35mm adapters - checkout philipbloom.co.uk - he's the man! I love the footage I get from my Brevis but I mainly use it with my HV30 because it is more portable. Using the A1+Brevis nearly killed me :)

Yeah, I added the vignette myself. The DOF is amazing - it's impossible to get such shallow DOF with a bare camera.

Regarding rails, I'd recommend you use rails if you're combining an adapter with your A1 - just to be safe.

    Hope that helps.

  • elholandes 3 months ago
Loved the work. I like one shot in the movie where you have a very WIDE DOF. I like that. Not many do that once they bought a adapter.

Matt E, amazing, I love it. I own the XH-A1 also. Can you please send me info on your custom preset on the camera, and what kind of software/color correcting you use?

    Just amazing man.

    Great footage Matt!

I have a similar set up to yours. Would you please also send me info on how you achieved such outstanding footage through premiere 20, and the A1 presets you used for this work.

Thank you so much for your inspiration!

  • Very nice stuff... really like the dof on this... really pops!! How do you like the brevis with the a1? I have an a1 and am considering getting an sgpro adapter...

Nice work, this is the nicest most crisp image I have seen of the A1, which I myself own. I have a ? 4 U. I am now seriously looking into buying the brevis 35. What other pieces did you add to the camera. Thanks from Buenos Aires.
