See all Show me
Yesterday was my first full day in NYC. I went out for about an hour and a half and filmed some stuff in the Union Square area and put this together.

I really want to encourage critiques for this video and ones to come, especially as far as production (as opposed to post-production) goes. I want to learn and get better!

Hmm, I don't know why but I liked the low shots and some of the normal height shots but the higher, more skyscraper level ones didn't do it for me. Sorry I can't be more specific right now.

I agree. I didn't like the skyscraper shots at all. It was fairly muggy that day as well, so it EXTRA didn't work.

Do you think the skyscraper shots would have been better if they were filmed from a higher perspective?

Yeah that would of been more interesting. Try it :)

Liked the pigeon shots (I'm a bird nerd), and the various people working/walking. I agree with Tex about the skyscrapers. The under the truck shot @ 0:24 was cool too. Regards

Thanks! I really like how different birds work with different music. Same question that I asked Tex: do you think the skyscraper shots would work better if they were filmed from a higher perspective?

Yup, definitely worth a shot imo. The only reason why I didn't care for them was because they didn't mesh with the strolling down the street vibe I got from the rest of the vid. Great stuff though :)

I agree with Mister E. The pigeon shots worked great with the music and I liked how the music came in later. And the "keyhole" shot of the bike under the truck shows your good eye. Also liked the guy screwing in the lightbulb--and it comes on right over his head as if he just had a great idea. And the construction worker's head on top of the big billboard body. I also liked the motion of the camera synched with the motion of the traffic mixed in with in/out zooms. Love the HD.

The vocals sound like the singer from The Unicorns.

Miss ya Caroline! And I love your stuff. I like the pan from the street to the Empire State Building. And the cut right after the lightbulb to the truck revealing the street. I've often thought of getting a poor man's steadicam for my video projects (usually of dancing)... have you seen this? steadycam.org
Good luck and I hope everything is well with you!!
  • Caroline Martin 4 months ago
Hey thanks Mike! I have looked into that, but I decided that for now I'm gonna go for one of those Gorillapods, since the steady cam is so heavy and I love how light my camera is (I know, lame, right?)
Good to hear from you. Send me a video sometime and let me know how everyone is doing!

Nice one, and about the skyscrapers, I think the pans are too fast as the other pans are.

... and you forgot to add the music credits ;)

I think this is pretty well done. Maybe for the first shot it might have been better not to use the zoom. Instead perhaps cut to a shot with the camera moved closer to the door.

Other than that I think the rest was fine. I liked the pigeon shot too. They're always funny.

I thought it would have been interesting if you had kept the view at street level and not show any faces of the people like you did up to 0:35. Kind of like seeing the movement of the city without making it personal by adding heads or faces. I liked the video.

    i love islands!

how did you get so close to peoples shoes in the first shot without freaking em out?

i like your new "staff" tag, SO sweet.

i also like how they made you change your username to your full name, oh well.

    sorry for no critiquing.

    well...

i liked the shots between 1:00 and 1:16 the most. the upward shots have a more big city feel, although i think people have already said that.

They didn't actually make me, or even suggest it! I changed my name because I felt left out. :x

Interesting shots. Personally, I'd go out on a sunny day or adjust my wb for a warmer color. I like the pace of the editing, but I found the visuals a little dull. Overall, I like your work :)

    btw, i love islands!!

Felt like a video showing things around the city people might usually miss... Has a nice feel to it.
