EMD F9 Southern Pacific leads a passenger train today.
A friend of mine got to handle this train out of Spokane today and we caught him twice before leaving us in the dust. This train is headed for the MRL main and will be in Livingston MT for a couple days before shooting back to Spokane. Notice the woman on the back porch and how she gets smoked out when the breaks start cooking.
Enjoy,
Ross
PS
We're going to try to catch this train on its return, so hope I will be able to provide more footage of this F9 for all you EMD fans.
Settings for Canon HV30 Channel
Mode: Auto
Recording Mode: HDV (60i)
Filters on Camera: 43mm Promaster Polarizer
Tape: Sony DVC HD 63min
I shot most of this with a tripod, time was early morning with the sun about 20 -25 degrees off the horizon. I used the Polarizer mostly for an anti-glare as I knew I would be shooting the train going away from me. I wanted to maintain as much detail as I could due to the fact the cars are silver metal and the sun reflections would have wrecked the shot without it.
Work Flow
Pinnacle Studio 11 Pro
Capture and edited using this software only. I rendered my final 1080/60i M2V to 720/60p to keep the picture smooth. I have found fast moving objects with hard edges work best if shot in 60i then converted to 60p. You do lose a little sharpness but I believe it pays out at the end.
Enjoy,
Ross
