This was pretty much a sound effects test to test some new sounds I acquired. Filmed with the HV20 at PF24 mode. Enjoy!

nice color correction, is it the berlin setting in magic bullet? the camera movements were well done too, nice jib shots!
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks Chris! It is a Green Easy preset from Film Magic Pro.

Nicely done Kyle. Good use of reactive lighting as well. The muzzle flash from the pistol seems a little bit large, but even so it looks good. :)

The guy with the M16 certainly isn't a very good shot though, kinda seems like he's firing an AK47 as far as his accuracy goes, but then I guess not everyone is trained for "one shot, one kill" hehe
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Haha, yeah. I made it to where no one dies, just escapes. Hence, the name.

    Y'all are lousy shots!

    (but good with special effects)
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
We are in this film. In real life, I'm not too bad at shooting a pistol.

I've noticed that with each film you post there is always an obvious improvement in your skills and this is certainly no exception. Im amazed at how fast your able to learn all these new techniques and put them to use.

Everything about this is great except that it needs to be longer! I want to see you do a few minute short action film with all this stuff that you are doing.

    Great work!
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
    Thanks a lot John!

I agree you are getting better each time. I really liked the crane shots too. Everything looked really good to me except one nit pic was to me the blacks were overly crushed but I'm just not a fan of that. Keep posting.
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Yeah its the FMP that does that :(. That's the only flaw with FMP. If you bring up the white levels the grain will show really bad. I will probably be getting Magic Bullet sometime soon.

what kind of adapter are u rockin?
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
    It's TwoNeil's DIY35mmPro static adapter. Works great!
  • Skyler Media 1 year ago
Awesome! i just ordered myself a jag35 vibrating adapter... I'm still in debate what type of lens i should get tho :P.. oh also how old are you?
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Those Jag35 adapters look nice, I can't wait to see his milled version. I'm 19 years old. And will also add that I started filming in late 2004, never thought I would even gain this much experience within this short time. :)

great man, and do you have problems with dust because it's a static adapter? and do you film without a flipped lcd hack or something?

i have one annotation to your movie, it looks like you don't consider the 180 degree rule en.wikipedia.org/wiki/180_degree_rule

    greets
    Marcus
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks Icke! I don't really have many problems with dust too much because I dust it out before and after shooting. I don't have my LCD flipped or anything, actually I just stand on on the opposite side when viewing my scenes and I have mostly gotten used to working with the LCD up side down. I know the Rule Of Thirds and maybe a couple other rules, but I really haven't looked into the 180 degree rule. But sometimes, it just looks better without using some of those rules.

did u use any kind of steadicam? how did you get the shot in the beginning when you come from the top?

No, I just used my tripod and Jib. The beginning shot was made by using the jib. Hope this helps.

  • Sage Pictures 1 year ago
Dude, thats fantastic, I second John's comment. What did you use for special effects? Also, get magic bullet looks - you'll love it.
  •
  • Sage Pictures 1 year ago
The one thing that was off (the only thing I noticed) the auto exposure was doing your shots harm. HV20 has zebra for making sure whites don't blow out. Use the blow out of whites as your guide for setting exposure. Always lock exposure so you do get that shift into darkness on your moving shots. Use the photo button trick in cinemode to set it. Don't let shutter speed go below 1/48 (such as 1/24 - usually only happens inside or at night)
2 things that made it awesome -
Moving jib shots - use this as much as possible, awesome
Slight frame shake + realistic fx
  •
  • Sage Pictures 1 year ago
    Oh - also the adapter
    thats 3
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks Sage! I forgot to turn my Zebras on, while shooting a film at one time I turned them off for some reason(can't remember why). I need to learn to lock that exposure, one of those things that I tend to forget easily, but I will get into the habit of manually adjusting my exposure. I plan to make more, I can't wait for everyone to see my WWII film that I will be making. But I still got more pre-production stuff to do, including finishing the script. If this film turns out how I hope it to be, then it will be way better than all my films so far. It will be about 2 German SS snipers and 4 U.S Airborne soldiers. Simply put, the U.S soldiers had a mis-drop and have to get to a extraction point. Won't be as easy as they thought. That's all I'm going to tell about it, cant wait to get everything together and start filming, but it might be a while.

  • HAZEM ABDULRAB 1 year ago
sorry for the dumb question..but how did the 35mm adapter make this vid better?...wat would have happened if u didnt use the adapter?
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
It really doesn't make anything "better". Some people find no use for a DOF adapter. However, it does give a more professional look to your films, if you know how to use it right. I like DOF adapters, but you can't use them in all situations.
  • HAZEM ABDULRAB 1 year ago
so it basicallly adjusts focus by what ive read on hv20.com and it gives a film like effect making the picture wide....or something like that
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
It does give a film effect for sure. But for the "wide" look that would be the aspect ratio.
  • HAZEM ABDULRAB 1 year ago
ok so now..u suggest the twoneil static 35mm adapter and what wide angle lens are u using?...and cant u change the angle to be wider on after effects?
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Yeah, Twoneil's adapter is good for the price, the Jag35 is also good, it's a vibrating adapter. Or if you have a thicker budget you could get a Letus35 or Brevis. I don't have any wide angle lenses, it would be nice to have one sometimes though. You can change the aspect ratio in After Effects, although I have never done it before.

  • Valentin K 1 year ago
Nice, but you foget bullet impact marks (the effect must be different in fonction of each surface ex:wood vs ground)...it's hard to sync, but if you do it during the prod it saves time. Well done, again!

edit: i was checking in my files and i couldnt find any built in game sounds, is there a special program i need to access them?

can u advise camera shootong setting please. Im new here. Ive just bouhgt the DOF from Neil.
    paramsivan@hotmail.com
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
I usually shoot in PF24 and use Tv Mode at a shutter speed of 48. Also, I have Zebras at 100%. And of course make sure to set and lock your exposure. With DOF I usually have my lens at f2.0 (Because that's my only option on my lens closest to f1.8), depending on your subject you might have to stop down the lens, or you won't be able to focus clearly.

Whoa I'm just awed by that video. You've definitely shown what the HV30 is capable of ( with the 35mm adapter ). I found it quite inspiring. I definitely plan on purchasing an adapter soon now. How would you compare twoneil's adapter to the JAG35? How do you focus with the adapter? Did you use Magic Bullet for the visual styling? Sorry for all the questions but your video has made me quite curious. Keep up the good work!
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks a lot Richard! I have never used the Jag35 but I have heard some good things about it. You focus with the lens and lock the focusing on the HV20/30. I used Film Magic Pro, but I would like to get Magic Bullet (and probably will sometime soon). No problem about answering your questions! I'm glad to help. :)

wow great quality! one question: what were your render settings? Im using h.264 compression on a MOV file, still trying to perfect rendering in AE...
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks Tim! I used H.264, also. I usually set the Kbps at 3500 or so, and make sure to use multi-pass. I also select the "Prepare for downloading" mode in the rendering settings, also. Hope this helps. :)

    looks good.

i was wondering where you got your muzzle flashes?

also cool effect when you moved the camera very slightly when the gun shot.
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks JB! I made the muzzle flashes fro scratch in After Effects. I think it's the best way to go IMO. Adding shake gives it a more powerful look I think.

REALLY nicely done guys. Love the way the cam shakes as the shots loose off. I'd live to know how to do the muzzle flashes. Hmm, hanks for the inspiration.

PS also, the opening shot on the jib? VERY nice and professional.
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Thanks Wayne! :) Yeah I figured that adding some shake would make the gunshots look powerful. learned how to make muzzle flashes from scratch from Andrew Kramer's "Seriuous FX and Composting"

    videocopilot.net/products/seriousfx/

I have used that technique and made it a little better. Yes, I used a Jib for the opening shot and some of the others.
  • Wayne Avanson plus 1 year ago
I might get into that sort of thing in Motion, I don't have after effects (still a bit new to it all as well) and head up the steep learning curve to try to achieve the same thing. Thanks for the link.

BTW, did you shake the screen in post? I presume so, since you wouldn't know exactly when they would be firing during filming would you.

    cheers again

    Avey
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Yes, the shaking was done in Post. To apply the shake I used "The Wiggler" in After Effects.

  • Michael Bakowski 1 year ago
Even if this is a test i still can't understand one thing. Why do the teenagers have guns and are shooting each other?
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Haha there was no plot to this at all. I've always been more of a DP than a story teller. I haven't been able to make a short since this film, all of the videos after this ones were tests also. I was working on one short until my camera broke. After I made this I wanted to make sure that I have a base plot of some sort anytime I make a new short video. But now I can't make anything because I have no camera, and I am waiting on an upgrade because there should be some new cameras coming out soon. Although as of now, I am highly considering the 5D MarkII.
  • Michael Bakowski 1 year ago
Yah , i just get a little touchy around that because i was in like a 15 page forum argument about that. Nice choose for a camera! i was thinking of going DLSR but i then choose that i am going to upgrade to the RED Scarlet (Have you seen the new redesigned one?) It seems to be a very good camera with all the choices of what you want to make out of it.
  • Kyle Shields 1 year ago
Yeah I have seen the re-designed Scarlet. And to be honest, the "Full Customization" idea blew it for me. Because you will get the "brain" only and you will still have to buy: Viewfinder and/or LCD, Batteries, their expensive CF cards, etc. And it's not coming out until Summer/Fall. And I don't have a camera at the moment and the Mark II is coming out this December, so I decided to go with that (but I will probably wait till some more videos and reviews).
  • americanvirus plus 11 months ago
The Mark II is beautiful, but you'll lack that 24p cinema quality. It only has 30p, and less manual control on the video end of things than the HV20/30. Although, as a stills camera, it's fantastic. I've got the Mark I. I did this w/it:

    vimeo.com/2304783

Also, here's a great blogpost on why the Mark II footage is less filmic, and always looks pretty "Video-ey" [no 24p]:

    prolost.blogspot.com/2008/09/reverie.html

I was also really disappointed in the new Scarlet changes. They originally talked about 3K for 3K, calling it a high end 'Soccer Mom Camera.' But, now the new model is definitely less of a Soccer Mom camera, and more of a low-end indie film-makers camera, which is great if you've got $10,000 or more to invest in completing your Scarlet set-up, but I'm basically working on the budget of a Soccer Mom. If that.

Don't get me wrong. I think the Scarlet is very exciting!!! It's changing the playing field and all the camera manufacturers are now going to have to catch up in order to keep up. Basically, it means that amazing original Soccer Mom Scarlet is just around the corner, only the corner's a lot farther away than I had hoped.

Just curious why you don't want to get another HV20/30? The reason I ask, is I'm in the market for a starter video cam and I've been leaning toward the HV30. BTW, your vids are great and so much fun to watch. They're really inspiring me to get off my ass and choose a camera to start playing with. None the less, was there aspects about the HV20/30 you didn't like? I'm pretty sure I'm going to go that direction. I keep hearing positive feedback about that camera, but hardly anything negative. Is there a reason you don't want to get back into one?

Oh yeah, and I'm not trying to downgrade the new 5D. I think it's amazing. I WANT ONE BAD!! I think it's a great camera, especially if your going to get into stills. As for the video, with those lenses on that thing, you can't help but get a beautiful image. I've just noticed that you have such a great cinema quality to what you've done with the HV20, that you might miss having that 24p cinematic look. None the less, I might just be nit-picking.

Please, if you can, let me know your pros and cons of the HV20/30. I've been digging what you've done with yours.

    Well, enough of my rant.
  • Kyle Shields 11 months ago
Oh I agree, and would love to have an HV30 and a MKII, but I doubt I could afford it. The reason I was leaning towards the MKII because of the quality and the cinematic looks you can pull off with it. 30p is a downfall, same as no manual control, but the HV30 doesn't have full manual either and there is a bunch of work arounds (not including the low light capabilities of the MKII). I hope there is a firmware hack for the MKII, that would be awesome! Make it have some manual control and have 24p, I look for someone to do that. The HV20/30 is a great camera for the price for sure. If you want a great camera on the cheap the HV20/30 is the way to go!
