Hmmm well let's see.. this could use more direction in cutting IMO - but here is a first version. This is from some footage that's been collecting dust (concentrates in revitalized areas such as Red Hook). I hope to upload more from this area and Asbury Park among other places.

Music is a mash of several Do Make Say Think tracks, some of my vocals, and a Colin Stetson track.

PS the video has been replaced and the horizontal lines issue /mystery is all solved.....

  • Wow these are some really beautiful shots, the score is really eerie as well, I enjoyed this.

    great job!

As far as the deinterlace...what do you edit on?
  • MariaNYC 3 months ago
Thanks Karen- I edited this on FCP 5.1 just can't understand why I exported 3 times H264 a clicked the deinterlace box and each one has these lines going through it
  • Awesome..alright try this.

Click on the effect tab. Then click on Video. Under video there should be one that is Image, or picture or something like that, under that you will find an effect that says deinterlace. Select All the clips on your timeline, then click on that effect (once) and drag it over all your clips. Then render. When you are done, export it and you should be golden :-) If you have problems or get lost in it let me know and I can message you with a more detailed step by step.

Thanks mucho! I'm trying this now - if this works I'll use it instead of doing it in Quicktime
  • If you export as a mp4, the quality will still be great and the size will be way smaller.

If you go to Quicktime Conversion. Then scroll down to MP4. Then make sure its on MP4 and H.264 Check the dimensions and bitrate and you should be golden.

very nice, you seem to have some very authentic junk there. Nice light, nice rust tones.
  • MariaNYC 3 months ago
LOL well Paul I'd say the area now is almost gentrified (as they just plopped an Ikea and condos to boot nearby) this is what's left of it - a rusty old Trolley on display LOL

very authentic junk to leave lying about, tre bon on the finding.

    Nice shots maria!

Clicking on deinterlace will take care of most footage, however the hv20's and hv30's have a 3:2 cadence. The first 3 frames are uninterlaced, and the 2 final frames of each cadence are interlaced.

This video is awesome with helping you deinterlace hv20/30 footage. He even tells you how to create a droplet so you can just drag and drop footage on an icon and it will do everything else for you!

You have great footage and images here. The concept and music are great. Some editing and keeping it shorter would help in my opinion. The textures are beautiful.

Thanks B- there are more images that belong with this piece - it is part of a larger and longer video project. The only way I can deal with it all is to split it in segments. I am saving the fine tuning when I join other pieces together.

I enjoy observational videos like this - it's like being able to replay a memory - with perceptions and misperceptions - and share it.
I'll be interested in seeing Asbury Park video. I used to have relatives in Red Bank/Sea Girt/Spring Lake.

Hi Maria, this is great! Interesting colours and textures. Works really well with the music too.

Just curious, what was wrong with the previous version you'd posted?

I would love a camera implanted in the middle of my forehead and I hope they invent that one day. LOL Yes oil changed everything particularly in the waterfront areas like this which has been undergoing a major transformation the last 10 years - just like the industrialization period that changed waterfront areas like this now it is real estate which is doing the opposite - the desire for waterfront property and BOOM everybody wants it. Not long ago there was hope to bring back the trolley - the tracks are still there and the idea was to rebuild them because the area is not connected by train (you need to take a bus as well to get there by public transportation). This aspect has kept the area off the radar for years and thus made it a haven for artists. Now new watertaxis will transport you from Manhattan to this area being gobbled up by ikeas and fairways & co. This location - with its predominantly low warehouse buildings- is the most southern part of Brooklyn - an amazing area for capturing light (like Coney Island).

Maria, this video touched me deeply.

I found myself immersed in the history of this deserted shell that once proudly conveyed countless people to destinations of joy and sadness, to loved ones and away from loved ones etc. etc.

Somehow you have captured all these spirits of times long passed with your varying shooting techniques and tempo changes.

A nice piece of serenity and drama with a glimpse of love and respect shining through. I wonder who directed this video, you, or the spirits of the shell?

Or maybe, I am just being a sentimental old fool.
  • MariaNYC 3 months ago
Thank you Keen for your observations and for such generous compliments. :-) you're definitely not a "sentimental old fool" the trolley is very intense particularly the location it resides (on the waterfront though not shown in this version) makes it something else
  • Keen Johns 3 months ago
OK you win, I'll drop the 'sentimental' bit, but I have to keep the 'old fool' because my age and mentality dictate these characteristics.

As for my comments earlier, it's a case of paying credit where it is due.

Now, stop this talking and get some more video's out for the Vimeo community to enjoy.
