Shots of the SB Harbor at night, most using 18/12dB gain.
This was super low light, almost none at all in the first shot! The grain is certainly noticeable, but at 12dB it is acceptable... I am preparing for a documentary shoot, part of which takes place on a boat at midnight.

Any tips for shooting in low light are welcome!

The shots with 18db gain look totally usable - especially for a documentary-style shoot.

Thanks for the comment Matt, I think I will go with 18dB!

The 18db shots don't look bad, but I feel like the 12db really does a better job showing the actual available light, rather than make the black parts of the image brighter.

Not sure if that makes any sense, but I prefer the 12db footage.

    +1

12db looks great, makes you look into the images a bit more, much like when it is actually night.

i actually shoot at +/-0 with my XH-A1 run mostly at 60 in the shutter and 1.6-2.0 in the Av (depth of field) for night / extreme low light. I also turn off the auto white and auto gain to manual.
