A little experiment my Dad and I took on, when I asked him if he could help me build a dolly. A few weeks later I've got a legit dolly and my dad has a new hobby...
Enjoy

    Man, this looks fantastic.
The dolly is just genius, and the video too.

What kind of material do you use for the track? Aluminium? And how do you connect them?
Great job - makes me want to get some filming done with my dolly.
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
Yup Aluminum, and to connect it is recycled wood dowels, very strong. my dad is the one who designed it, i just explained to him what would work best, and test them.

Thanks, it's pretty basic now that im looking at it. right when i finished I started using zooms as well, and that makes the dolly stuff to me, even better.
    Thanks for watching.

Oh no, not another dolly video! 2x slo mo really enhances the effect.
  • I agree, about the 2x slo mo
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
What doe's (2x slo mo) mean?
You mean the 60fps or am I missing something?

jay thats sick, hey what are your scene file settings
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
The scene files settings are basic.
scene file: film cam, 60 fps
my gamma, and ped are always diffrent from shot to shot.
    rec setup: 720 30pn. some 720 60p

If you shoot in 720 30pn, at 60fps, you can speed up the clips twice the speed, it will look closer to normal motion, then to slow it down you just let it go back to it's normal frame rate 60fps. it works pretty good for faster moving stuff.
  • leo hoorn 1 year ago
but if you shot 720- 30pn at 60 fps you do not get audio right?
  • Harry Christy 1 year ago
    exactly what i was thinking?

i found out about this on skateperception.com forums, a skateboard filming website with over 15,000 members. you should check it out... there are tons of aspiring filmmakers who look up to guys like yourself.

anyways, i want one.. but i'll need to send two payments because i have a $400 daily limit on my debit card. would that be ok?

also, how strong are the tracks. like, lets say i stomped them as hard as i could. would the tracks dent?
  •
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
Thanks for the compliment, I usually try and stay away form forums, they kinda weird me out. Vimeo is the only site Im truley siked on, the H.D quality is the best. As for the payment thing it's out of my hands. This is something i did with my dad, I was the one who tested the dolly's and he is the making/selling side of it. I don't think he'd go for the partial payment but who knows maybe he'll be feeling trust worthy that day.
The dolly rails are pretty strong, if you stepped on them with your feet it they wouldn't dent, if you drop a board from a few feet above straight on it, it might, but from what hell I've put most the dolly's i've tested through, all i've noticed is they scratch easy.
Just go to the site thats at the end of the commercial, and talk with my dad.

i'll pay in full, i'll just call to assure that my card wasn't stolen or anything.

every time i watch this commercial i get stoked to go out and shoot
    any tips to dolly shooting?
oh and i cant decide if i should have osi (steadyshot) on or off, what do you do?
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
Oh I've found that with the HVX, and if your using a tripod, DONT USE OIS, I feel it defeats the purpose of steady shot. all It does is work against itself.
As for dolly shot's, Im not sure, there becoming a dime a dozen...
Time lapse and dolly shot's are pretty fun, it's difficult but rewarding when you get a good one.

video was totally insane, amazing editing and even better filming.

im just a shitty skater, but i think filming is always different, and people have tastes and that you can get very creative with it. this video is inspiring, not sure why.

your in luck I just talked with my dad today, and he just got done designing a new dolly for a bigger tripod, for a bigger camera. We were thinking about the RED1
A friend of mine used the dolly(the old dolly) with that camera and he said it worked out. So my dad re did a few things and made it work even better.
Soon he'll have another dolly style.

    Hey Jason,
    great work!
    someone mentioned the sound earlier.
Just wondering how you capture sound with slo-mo?
    record separately?
    thanks, nate
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
I like sound, I end up using a lot of different sounds just for one clip, if it's skating, i've got plenty of sound bites to chose from, if it's random audio, i like sound track pro.
    Thanks for watching

i'm thinking about making a dolly similar to this soon and was wondering how you make it for the tripod to stay on? and what legs are those?
  •
  • Jesse 1 year ago
man i was set to buy one
but dang the price is just...wow....
    awesome video tho
  • Jason Hernandez plus 1 year ago
Ah the price isn't actually that bad, shop around and see what real dollys in stores cost, there in the thousands, and you cant travel with them.
If you bought a $3,000.00 dollar S.D camera, or spent over $5,000 on a H.D camera a $500.00 dollar dolly isnt that bad.
    Thats what I think
    thanks for watching
