Skomer Island lies to the SW of the Marloes Peninsula in Pembrokeshire and is an inportant breeding area for puffins.

The U.K. puffin populations are in general decline which is believed to be caused by a shortage of food supplies.

The Skomer population is estimated as 6,000 breeding pairs.

Puffins only visit the coast during the breeding season and spend the rest of the time out at sea.

John, another wonderful footage, soothing music too.
John what software do you use to render? I've noticed after my footage has been transferd to my computer it's kind of not in a flow by that I mean it keeps jerking, however, when viewed on the C.C. it isn't...does it happen to you too, not sure if I should burn coz. don't want the video too look all jerky.

Allan, Many thanks for you comments. I use Pinnacle Studio Version 12 and find it is very sluggish when editing AVCHD. When the footage is played within the editing software the footage is jerky and I guess I need more processor power/memory to help solve this. The finished footage when burnt to a disk in AVCHD format and played via a Sony Playstation is fine. In comparison when I edit AVI footage from my Canon camera the playback in the editing software is satisfactory.

Really good John and I know how hard it is to get these shy birds. I didnt manage to get shots like this of the tufted puffin in Alaska. So excellent! You know in Holland we call these species: Papagaaiduiker (Parrotdivers!) BTW what kind was the black one in the middle?

Jan, Many thanks for your comments which are much appreciated. The B/W bird in the middle of the puffins was a Guillemot. The B/W bird by itself was a Razorbill. I can never get a highlight into the eye of the Razorbill - I even struggle with my still shots with this species.

Shawn, If the bird you refer to has a white stripe on its beak it is a razorbill.

John, nice shoots of the puffin. Looks like this is a beautiful area for shooting birds, the flowers, the cliff etc...
This is a area I would like to go to, how's the access to this area?

Per, Skomer is a great island for filming puffins. The following link will give you plenty of information - welshwildlife.org/skomerIntro_en.link

The Farne Islands in Northumberland is also a good place - a greater variety of sea birds but doesn't have the abundance of flowers. I hope to visit the Farnes in late April.

Both locations involve a short boat trip.

Don't hesitate to contact me again if I can help with any other information.
