Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: Est-ce-Mars (virginal)
Monumenta Musica Neerlandica
ernst stolz on virginal
The Melody Est-ce-Mars is borrowed from an air de cour by Pierre Guédron from 1613.The tune became immediately popular in the low countries, England and Germany. In the Fitzwilliam virginal book a setting by Farnaby is included (the new Sa-Hoo) and also a setting for instruments by Scheidt.
A nineteenth century Dutch text is "ga je mee over zee, hou je roer recht" and is still sung today (but where?)
