Matthew Modine rides the streets of New York on a bicycle to tell everyone about "Bicycle For A Day."

"Bicycle For A Day" is a fun, open and proactive invitation designed to inspire individuals, communities, governments and corporations to take a step towards solving the current environmental issues. BFAD is a global initiative bringing together people who choose to ride a bicycle rather than use gas-powered motor vehicles.

BFAD will debut with small, VIP events during Summer / Fall 2008 that lead up to a gathering at The South Street Seaport in NYC, to mark the "official" BFAD day, September 20th.

This is not a bicycle race! BFAD is a day to demonstrate how doing ONE thing can help improve the environment.

thanks ivan. would love to have everyone film themselves riding their bikes and yelling, "this is my bicycle..." could be an amazing way to get the global aspect of BFAD to happen. could post them here and elsewhere. good idea!

thanks. see my comment to ivan. what do you think? would you film one?
  • Andreas L. 1 year ago
Haha, nice idea! I'll hook myself up with a cam and register it and pass the voice to a couple of bicycle oriented blogs. May I suggest you to come up with a specific tag to be used to mark those videos so that it's going to be easy to search for them? Someone would easily make a "collage" with the funniest ones at some point.

Great vid Matthew and great cause. Not sure what the deal is but in the tags it says "HD" and it's not showing up as HD on Vimeo. If it was HD ya might wanna look into it and possibly re-upload.

So not to divert from topic of the vid, but on a technical side the video looks great, shots, depth of field, edited well etc. Was wondering what it was shot on and what program it was edited with.

lol, just noticed the comment before mine, seems I'm not the only curious one. =)

What a cute video, Matthew! A fantastic idea, which I think would go over well here in the Windy City. Chicago's got a huge bicycling initiative as the city continues to Go Green. I don't own a bike yet but it's at the top of my list now that gas prices are so ridiculous. Love the idea of filming a "This is my Bike" video!

    Peika invented Boomstick360.com
  • Matthew 1 year ago
love the boomstick! i just met with the chicago mayors office. next year, the plan is that bicycle for a day will be the mac-daddy closing party for bicycle month in chi town. chicago is the BEST! love that city. and perfect for dumping the car and cruising the two wheeler. did you ever see "wind"? i made a sail out of my t-shirt and sailed my bike on a runway in windover, utah. really fun! you could sail the lake front!
  • VendelasCity 1 year ago
Wow, you're really on top of the bicycle thing! Good for you for promoting awareness. I'm not surprised that Mayor Daly's office is on board with your idea since he's an avid cyclist himself. We're becoming more bike-friendly and recently, some of our buses were retrofitted with bike racks (do they do that in NY?) Haven't seen "Wind" but now you've piqued my curiosity. A sail out of a t-shirt? How industrious! Is "Wind" available on DVD?
  • VendelasCity 1 year ago
I found a trailer for "Wind" on imdb. Cool! A film about the America's Cup! The cinematography looks amazing. My brother's a professional sailor and we grew up on the ocean in NJ and CA, so I'm definitely going to rent this. How many takes did it take to shoot that scene with you riding the bike hands-free, holding up the t-shirt sail? You should definitely try that on the streets of New York (but be careful!)

I enjoy riding a bike, though the city I live in is not pedestrian friendly, and there are a lot of people who tend to speed and run red lights. But out in suburban neighborhoods, it's a good hangout for any of us on the go.

  • Beautifully shot PSA/doco/slice-of-life.
Stylistically it reminds me of the VBS.tv docos.
I like the way that your message isn't "cars are bad" (as is the all-too-common theme in environmentalist docos), but rather the much more positive "bikes are awesome."
I ride a scooter but you've inspired me to bike around on the days when I've got some time to kill.

I'm Singaporean and lived there a couple of years. I know the exact liberated feeling pedaling through Times Square and such. No better way to know your city (not just NY) and beat the traffic but to be on a bike. And now I'm in Holland, so it all came as a natural transition; sans the hotdogs. That city could sure use less honking and gas emission! Definitely a good cause Matt. Nice Simple bike! Need we mention it better be companied with a fat-ass Kryptonite lock? ;)

    Matthew,
Great job man. Good to see you out riding your bike again. I bumped into you years ago when i was still in film school, making copies of a storyboard at Village Copier. Used your copy card by accident, gave you mine in exchange. Exchanged a little funny banter and then you road off on your cruiser towards the west side.
Funny that i still remember that actually. I've been working for streetfilms.org and TA for a few years now shooting videos just like this.
I'd love to do a PSA with you for TA or streetfilms to promote bicycleforaday if your down. hit me up if your interested and keep up the great work!

Im amazed. I really want to promove this kind of thinking in my place Aviles in Asturias, the Norh/Spain but the prefered to install bikes without a place or a way to bikes. I mean, the put off thirteen bikes locked in the street. I think is not the better way to do things. So we continue to make some pluralmeeting infront of our Ayuntament. So im a biker, living in barcelona and let me show you those document, from 1908, europafilmtreasures.eu/PY/245/fiche_technique.htm?ID=245 you might to look the people crossing the railway, its so funny! So let me know how you think guys, Thanks for all, and Rock and Ride a Bike as simple as possible. Seeya
