really cool. love the titles! the end is crazy. thanks for sharing.
  • Ah yer welcome. I wondered how many people would stick around for the end. it kinda stops after the slow part and then starts up again. I hope people dont walk away after that initial opening part...

Yes, I'd like to know this as well... Freaking amazing job all around!
  • Wow guys thanks. I shoot with a Sony HDR FX1. Got it about a year ago and love it. Although I think I like the "look" of the EX1 a little better.

really nice. cleaver. the end box visual pulled me out a bit, but really nicely done. the idea and execution has such class, just let it sing man.
  • Thank you. Yeah I thought maybe that part held on for a bit too long but for me it worked in the end. I appreciate the crit. Take care

bet u didnt really want it in the frame..but i loved the silhouette of the trees :] cool! :]
  • Well I really couldnt do much about it...but actually, I enjoy it very much. I think it gives you a little sense of depth.

My boy Steven Spielberg always has backlighting in his movies and so I think it's cool that the fireworks light up the trees from behind.

awesomeness! i didn't even think that it can give a very wonderful effect when you reverse the speed of the video...

    its really a great one

    Great edit.
But, could you also post the original movie (without the music en FX) ?
  • ah man I can'y anymore....I deleted the scratch files off my hard drive. it's reallly one long shot. I never stopped recording for the 45 minutes they were going off. I just kept playing with my zoom levels and focusing in and out while tilting and panning my tripod.
  • eladbari 1 year ago
wasnt it tough then? editing from one big chunk of file?
u know...maybe a bit annoying to scrub through all and start trimming...plus maybe a bit laggy for previewing? just a hunch..
  • It was for a bit. Then I started "knowing" where the good parts were because I had watched the clip in chunks so many times. It wasnt lagging at all surprisingly. I just beefed up my computer a few days prior with more storage and RAM so it runs reeeeeeeally nice now :)

I really liked this video. It captures the essence of a fireworks event, and then turns up the effects - as it were. Very inspirational.

freaking schweet, man!!! that is an excellent interpretation of a 4th of july spectacle… very well done, imo. one word comes to mind, WOW!

great choice of music as well. sigur rós is awesome. even tho they're from iceland, we'll let ya slide for using 'em for a 4th of july video, lol.
  • Thanks Todd I appreciate it. Yeah I was trying really hard to use an "Explosions In The Sky" song because I felt the title of the band was appropriate in itself but for some reason this Sigur Ros song just called to me.

Again a good example of how editing gives an added value to something which already is a spectacle.

I really like the out of focus shots!
  • Yea I knew when I was capturing my footage that I wanted to use those shots for the beginning titles. I thought it had a professional look to it. I dont know why, it just felt that way to me.

    Very very nice.

I miss watching the July 4th fireworks celebrations in USA. I used to watch the fireworks display near Brooklyn from the Frank Sinatra drive in Hoboken (I studied at Stevens Institute of Technology)

    Cheers from India.

    My God, that was good!
Never seen footage of fireworks played backwards but it really works well and even though the Sigur track is slow and gentle at the start it seems to fit perfectly.
I devoted my full attention to it from start to finish which is a good sign.

Well done and thanks for sharing this.
I'm going to watch it again now!
  •
  • Thanks for the emotions that you've given to me watching this wonderful video!

Very cool video but in my opinion you used this reverse-effect too often. Anyway still great work.

3:14 - I said "wow" the exact same time the man said it! haha

    Pretty cool video.

I thought too much of it was out of focus...cool effect but overused. So was the reverse-effect...just didn't feel right.

Good job using the trees as a perspective though! Overall a pretty cool video.

  • airwicc 1 year ago
really kool man. how'd you do the reverse effect, and what program?
  • Final Cut Pro...real easy, just brought up the clip in final cut and simply clicked on a reverse checkbox in the speed properties

This amazing work I will enjoy at our national day, the august 1, together with the best roasted swiss "Bratwurst" in one hand and a real fine beer in the other.
After that I will check, if there is a better firework outside.
    I think, that not ;-)
  • ah yes nothing better than food and drink on days/nights like these my friend. Cheers to you.

Hi Michael, Over here in the UK we don't have the 4th celebrations (well we wouldn't would we - we lost) our fireworks happen in the cold, wet nights of November, but I can't wait now to have a go at his myself. But trust me, if I do I will always tell people "I got this idea from Michael Brodner" :) A fantastic concept and I don't think you overused any of the effects, I just kept waiting for the next backwards firework, because now I know that backwards fireworks are even more beautiful - you have opened my eyes to a beauty that I never knew before and that is what art should do. Fantastic!
  • wow, I can't tell you how meaningful it is to hear comments like this. It fuels me to create art more and more everyday. I love making things that open peoples eyes to something that they never really knew was there to begin with. I appreciate your support and best wishes my friend.
