2. Life researching gelada monkeys on the Guassa, Ethiopia
6 months ago
A few clips taken from a year spent living on an afro-alpine grassland in Ethiopia while studying the gelada monkey (Theopithecus gelada). These social monkeys sleep on the massive cliffs surrounding the great rift valley and ascend to high altitude grasslands where they graze in large herds during the day. Located in Northern Shoa, Ethiopia, this is one of the few remaining pockets of Afro-Alpine grassland left unspoilt by ever expanding human populations and their livestock. Several clips of the world's most endangered canine, the Ethiopian Wolf, are included as well.

Music: beginning of 'Hoppipola' by Sigur ros from their album Takk.

wow. so cool. such a fascinating sounding experience...
Although, you must have started to go a bit batty by the end of a year, being alone that long!

yeah, I haven't posted the 'video diary'. Not sure if the world is ready for that yet.

Tell me about it... might be time to upgrade from my digital point-and-shoot as well!

I know nothing about your camera and the purpose of this videos (besides researching)... but spending so much time in such a beautiful place, I think, gives you the time to have some steadier shots. I think you have a lot of patience... because otherwise you won't be able to stay that long between monkeys. It's obvious that you love this type of researching... and everyone can see that! An image is like music... it can move. So, please make some music from your work.
My first lesson as a cameraman was to use a tripod. I would recommend you a tripod with fluid head. But also you might find more useful a monopod... or, maybe a shoulder stabilizer. If I were you, I would stick with a light tripod. I guess, you could do a real documentary, like they do on Animal Planet.
I know nothing about your budget. So please excuse me if I'm annoying.

this film makes me want to be back in malawi where I worked with yellow baboons, i worked in a wildlife rescue centre that confiscated wildlife from illegal wildlife traders and poachers, we rehabilitated the baboons (and other wildlife) then a few weeks ago we released our first troop back to the wild, i put some footage on here of our work but have yet to edit the baboon release footage. will do soon though, keep the footage coming but i would agree about the tripod, if not, just rest it on a rock when filming, gives a low down perspective but can work.

This is amazing! I LOVE the last shot...great ending; the music goes really well. I am just curious, though...how did you recharge your video camera batteries?! What did you eat? You brought enough stuff for a year?
  • jtkerb 9 days ago
I shot these clips with a rather crappy point and shoot digital camera with video function that took AA batteries. The main reason for my being there was to study the behavior and ecology of these monkeys, so I was prepared to stay for a year of fieldwork. I would take a trip back to Addis Ababa every few months to buy more food. I ate mostly pasta and homemade soup.

You seriously need to contact National Geographic or some other agency; you got some amazing shots with that "crappy" point and shoot. :)
