25. Monopod as a Poor Ma…
Okay, saw and liked Johnny Chung Lee's Poor Man's Steadycam ( cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/ ) and was going to make one when I looked at my barely used monopod. All it needed was a weight and a handle. I used wrist weights and PVC for the handle, this way I can remove the weights and handle when I want to use it as a monopod.

This is one of my first times trying this setup. I'm no Steadicam operator by a LONG shot, but even for a rank beginner this is better than my hand held stuff. I'll get better when I learn the Grocho Marx/Steadycam walk.

Hey man, for a monopod converted to a steadycam thats not bad at all. I've seen much worse from people who have legit Merlins and Steadicams, like an earthquake off the richter scale.

Thanks -- looks a bit better off Vimeo. Yeah, I've seen some people's stuff with serious gear that was worse which got me to wondering. Saw a Steadicam training class video where they had coaches, spotters, real Steadicam gear that was balanced, etc. and they were all over the place. Granted, with 40-200 hours of experience they'll rock.

Also read of some people struggling to get their Glidecam and others balanced -- even after six months!

After doing this video I had a total of maybe 20-30-minutes of experience. I need to learn to walk, watch where I'm going, watch verticals, the subject, etc. as I do this. Hopefully, I'll get better with experience, too. Johnny Chung Lee's stuff looks darn good and is as far as I will even need to go in stabilization.

Nicely done! It's really impressive to see us serious "amateurs" getting such nice shots from consumer gear, a little effort and ingenuity!

You are a role model, sir. Probably going to make your version as well.

    Sold my Steadicam JR.

how do you like the Sony VCL-HG0758 wide angle lens? how much of a difference does it make on the hv30? thanks

I really like the lens. Bought it for a larger HD camera and it passed my tests with it. The downsides are no threads on the front and it's about 93mm on the front so getting a commercial hood isn't easy.

I got a few requests so I just made a quick video with the Sony lens: vimeo.com/1587276

  • The nice thing about your rig is that because the monopod is commercially produced, it doesn't look so cheap (like the Johnny Lee rig). I have a version of Johnny Lee's steadycam, and all I can say is that I don't feel comfortable bringing it to say, a wedding. Your monopod version would look just fine in that setting.

    Nice work.

If you pause the video at about 1:08 you should be able to see how I connected things. The piece that I connected to the monopod using the clamps is called a "clip tee", I called it a snap connector and use them to connect PVC based flats and other things I made together. Hope this helps.
