Running along the ridge of mt Palomar mountain "ridge soaring" - this puts roller coasters in a whole new perspective. Ridge running is based on the wind and lift coming off the top of the ridge.

The HD version is a big difference from the pocket camera, and to make it all more fun, we enjoyed the entire run and ended up in 400 feet per minute thermal lift... time to climb and play again.. Oh Yeah.

My favorite place to fly gliders in California skysailing.com

Were you piloting that glider? That was so cool! I'm amused that a Danish boy chose some good 'ole American Country music for the soundtrack :)

its not often you get to see the effective air speed in relation to the ground, so brilliantly....

Whow ! I wish I could have taken your place during this flight. I never experienced ridge soaring by myself; the only comparable situations might be when i was circling in the dust of a coal fired power plant. It's like sitting on a wild horse, trying not to be thrown out. Fantastic video.
  • Bo Lorentzen plus 1 year ago
Andreas - soaring a smokestack DOES sound pretty cool, must have been a pretty hot fire somewhere. Though Im guessing the air-quality is not really good for breathing.?
  • Andreas Paschen plus 1 year ago
The guys from the power plant maintain, that it's only water vapour rising up, but sometimes i disbelieve it strongly.

This is unbelievable! Was this a solo flight? Were you holding the stick and the HD cam at the same time?

It is possible to fly with one hand and film with the other

But never EVER so close to the ground as Bo was flying ;-)

  • Bo Lorentzen plus 1 year ago
Andrew - LOL.. No its not - holding on to the camera is quite a task in its own right, alternating G forces tend to move it all over the cockpit. (part of the task is keeping the camera from smacking me in the face when the G load changes rapidly.)

This is awesome! Would it be possible to mount the camera? How low to the ground do you think you get?
  •
  • kruzer 1 year ago
dude... you were not getting any lift and going down on lots of places ... and very close to the terrain :)
It's a good thing you were keeping up the airspeed, just in case.
(I don't think I'd do this, am a pilot for 45 years now)

Edit: ( a friend of mine got slammed on the ridge like that, crashed and broke both leggs and ankles. He never walked after that)

You can mount the camera with a small suction cup to the front, side or top of the windshield. I made rock-solid videos that way with a canon SD805IS. Look for it in any camera stores.

Or if you want real video camcorder mount, then use this:
    filmtools.com/filmtools-in-car-windshield-camera-mount.html
    This works great!

    Enjoyed your movie :)

Thats kind of what I was thinking. One of the founders of Estrella Sailport lost it flying ridge...don't know the details.
Seemed kind of risky to me.

Adrenalin rush! Those left turns towards the start were freaking me out! Any green stains on the wingtip?
  • Bo Lorentzen plus 1 year ago
Hello Bill, No there were no stains on the wingtips. Nice work on the Kuper system, don't know what hollywood would be without it. Now I just need to make a ultra small little 2 axis rig for mounting on the wing... so we can get some stable air to air of gliders.

Mate this is mad!!!!.....I would suggest you ramp up the saturation , crush the blacks a bit ( so it is not so washed out ) and try smooth cam on some of the shots ( if you cut in FCP ).....just my thoughts.....Hell of a ride!!!

Ok - you are freggin crazy to do this with out a motor - not a lot of room for error on this run.

That is nuts!!! Violating just about every airspace guideline out there.

The music choice, although amusing, completely ruined this video for me. I wanted to turn the volume off, but I also wanted to hear the background sounds! DILEMMA! I've never been on a ride like this, so it would be much more immersive to hear the natural sound only.

That aside, this is a fantastic video, and I thank you for sharing it with us! It definitely seems like more fun than a roller coaster. I would ride like that all day if I could...

Neel, my pleasure... flying is a great sport. to be honest with you I have never really managed to fly a model-glider, its a bit too complicated.. seems easier when you are in the plane. :-)

    crazy!

    the good old Twin...
    it's a Twin III, isn't?
the same, I learned flying on,
but I never flew that close to the ground (except rope-break-practices)
    must be awesome...
    but always watch your speed!
(as the grandma of a friend used to say: always fly low and slow, so nothing can happen! *gg*)
  •
  • Bo Lorentzen plus 6 months ago
    Twin Astair Acro.
(I still think it could have a bigger rudder, seems like one gotta step a lot to get some action from it)

Yeah it is good fun, though Grandma is not right about low and slow... speed is energy and gliders is all about energy management. the ticket is low and fast, that means control and the ability to maneuver the plane safely. Low is not a good place to practice stall recovery.
But then you already did know that.. I just though it might be good to say that for other viewers.. this is kind of a "don't try this at home" kind of thing.
  • Stef-One 6 months ago
You're right, but my club always makes fun of that ;-)

the rudder is really not effective enough! (from the back seat you have a little bit more power on it, did you notice that?)...
*gg* when I first flew a single-seater (ASW15) the thread on the canopy always stood far in the direction of the curve, 'cause I was used to kick the rudder harder

By the way, if you want to learn something more about the airstream in stall and slip (but I guess you already know a lot of that), please wait another week and I will have finished my video of a research we did in 2007 with our twin...

    greetz from twin astir's home-country!

Must be a thrill to fly that route :-) I had the privilege to fly with an open two-seater sealplane along the Dutch dunes and make a movie of the flight (see the vid on my account). But that was a complete different setting ;-)

FANTASTIC VIDEO. I saw this for the first time a couple of months ago. It inspired me to give ridge running a try at Tom Knauff's school in Julian, PA. While not as wild as your ride it was a pure blast. Revived the fire that first got me into flying nearly 30 years ago. Just one ridge runner newbie question. It looked like you were flying on both sides of the ridge. How did that work? I thought you had to stay on one (the upwind) side. Thanks again for posting the video Dave.
  • Bo Lorentzen plus 1 month ago
Dave, sorry I did not reply to this earlier. you are right about the split of the ridge, this particular ride only works when the wind is in just the right corner, basically the dynamic lift is on top and to the right, but we are jumping taking a shortcut to the next life on the left (more or less)
