Shot this first light for a corporate job. No surf and grey skies for a week then the day I got up early - nice glassy 3 to 4 footers came rolling around the point with blue skies. Shot with a polarizer on the EX1. Used twixtor to slow down some segments.

Geoff, did you 3 way color correct this? Very nice. I use the bare bones from Final Cut Studio 2. Be nice to super bump like this.

    Hot video!

Hi Marty. I do 3 way colour correct some things. But mostly try and get it right in camera, rather than fixing in post. I don't think I colour corrected anything in this clip. Twixtor is worth the money for sure. Is hard at first to get your head around it, but does turn ordinary shots into interesting ones.
  • Marty 1 month ago
So the deep blues were bumped on the camera?
  • Geoff Charters 2 days ago
geez I'm slack. i never replied to you on this? Can't remember dude. No the deep blues are deep blue because I white balanced off the sand. And the sand on these beaches is pretty much yellow. or pale yellow. Got lucky this day though. Was crystal clear day. And had the x1. Can't go wrong. White balance and focus and you're sweet to go.

Twixtor, what does it do? Should I get it?

  • 91st Studios 2 months ago
Twixtor is one of the best time remap plug-ins available. It enables you to speed up, slow down, or frame rate convert your image sequences.

Wow stunning shots again! Who's music is it? Fits perfect! Do you use a Circular or Lineair Polarizer? What Brand? Does it fit with the EX1 sunhood on it or do you have a seperate filterbox/compendium?
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
Thanks Jan. The music is from Soundtrack Pro V 2.020 - composition called "Realization." The polarizer is a century from Schneider Optics. I have a matt box with 4x5 and 4x4 filter rack. The polarizer is a 4x4 circular.

Those birds at the end look enormous!
  • Lyall Furphy 2 months ago
I clicked the heart button because of the pelicans.

The Australian Pelican is rather large up close.

Here's some unsolicited info from the Australian Museum
    austmus.gov.au/factsheets/australian_pelican.htm
  • Geoff Charters 1 month ago
For some reason I didn't realise Australia had unusually large pelicans. I assumed they were all over the world.
  • Texas Gentleman 1 month ago
That's hilarious. Perhaps their dimensions are further exaggerated by the fellow who runs behind them?
  • Geoff Charters 1 month ago
Yea exactly. I meant to shoot it like that.
Ok, not really.....but is quite funny. Giant man eating birds.

*sick* It really is rubbish where you live isn't Geoff! The entire vid is beautiful but I especially love the 3 by standers at the end!
  • Geoff Charters 1 month ago
Yea those crazy monkeys were eyeballing me waiting to strike. Lovely creatures when they don't bite.
Yes I get complaicent where I live. It's great.

They're brave enough to get close enough to BITE?!!! They are cool, I like the way they look like Pterodactyls when they fly.

The water over the rocks at the start is sweet. Looks like paint. Nice job!
  •
  • The best shot is about a 30 seconds into it. Looks like dusk, the guy gets closed out, would love to see it uncompressed. Would love to ride the waves. Twixtor is the pathway to many abilities some considered to be unnatural.

Geoff - Fabulous video! Water, land, beaches looked pristine, clean and lovely. Our beautiful Earth as nature intended it. Those pelicans looked so real, I could have reached out and touched them. The colors were marvelous. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your talent with your fans!
    Best wishes mate
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
Much appreciated Steva. I try hard. And love the ocean and to surf. So it is an easy thing for me to shoot. "Shoot what you know!" I say...

    Cheers!

Excellent ! The opening scene got my attention
and the ending shot left me wanting more. Perfect
pace cutting with the music, and the music works
very well. Don't you just hate getting up early for a good sky :-)
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
Thanks Rick. Appreciated. Yea since working as a filmmaker I have never been up sooo early sooo many times in my life. It's nice that thing they call a sunrise.

Pretty amazing stuff! You mean it isn't always like that there? :~) Had to laff at the end shot.
The slo-mo is so good it looks over-cranked.
    Time to learn twixtor.
Thanks for the invitation to view!
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
    Thanks Rusty.
Wasn't sure if the last shot fit with the rest of the clip, but had to put it in there. They seemed to love the camera.
Go buy twixtor. It's worth the money and worth spending time to learn how to use it.

I like seeing this kind of surf footage cuz I can relate to it better than big waves or crazy tricks. Just beautiful slow-mos.
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
Thanks Jay. I'm with you on that. I surf alot (if I'm not stuck on the beach with a camera) and I don't really like watching surf films with short boarders doing the same old tricks.
    Cheers!

how did you make the file so small with such good quality?
  • Geoff Charters 2 months ago
Probably alot to do with the camera itself. Was shot on the EX1. I exported a HD master straight out of FCP, then opened with Quicktime Player and used the setting vimeo gives: vimeo.com/help/hd
The H.264 compression type is the best to use. Or the best I've used for sure.
    Hope that helps mate.

    Loved your haltlos trailer. Stunning.
Contact us if you make it to Australia for sure. I have lots of spare boards, know lots of surf breaks, and will join you in some filmmaking projects.
