Lucky Dragons played an amazing set at Towne Lounge last night. Amongst some other rad tricks was this cool device that he built.

I have no idea how it works, but just by touching other people you could alter the sound and visuals. It was crazy.

I didn't cut much out of the video, because I think it's really cool to watch and listen to. If you get bored and want to see more of the projection, skip to the last 10 seconds.

Wow that's really cool. I love it when people make their own instruments. It's like writing your own music, but a whole couple of steps further!

I'm guessing it works in a similar way to a theremin except instead of having an induction loop to complete the circuit, he just uses people or whatever as a ground point. Obviously everyone has different resistances etc so they would all make slightly different sounds. That's clever, and really cool.

that's what i was thinking - human theramin. i wonder how that connected with the visuals though.

The cables were plugged into a small box, which was plugged into a midi device. So I think it all became midi signals somehow. It's pretty easy to control visual stuff with midi.

I'm pretty sure this was a Max/MSP/Jitter patch, with some custom hardware.

According to Jona, he was basically processing the hum that was created by people touching each other. Like when you touch the tip of a guitar cable.

Taken out of context some parts looked like a hippy fest and everyone's groping each other. Ah shit I didn't mean to offend anyone. What a fun drug this sound is.

I will forward this to my friend Chris in seattle and see what he has to say. He works in MaxMspJitter doing sound and video work.
