Shot with a Canon HF100.

Inspired by "Another Morning Walk" by Charlie McCarthy.

Music: "The Anhtkythera Mechanism" by BT

Camera Settings:
- 60i. This allows for the best slow motion (As opposed to 30p or 24p).
- Shutter priority mode using maximum shutter speed (1/2000).
- Shallow depth of Field created by locking the focus to objects that are 1 to 2 inches in front of the camera (Macro focus). I don't have a DOF adapter, but will be getting one soon.

Post:
- Edited in Sony Vegas.
- Color graded in Magic Bullet Looks.
- Speed changes were done by manipulating the velocity envelope (matching the changes with the music done by visually observing the waveform of the music track and making the changes on the beats).
- Speeds were slowed down anywhere from 50% to 12% with smart resampling.

I do have a question for anybody out there who may have an answer to this: When I render using Mainconcept's mp4 codec, the audio and video of the rendered file are slightly out of sync. However when I upload the file to vimeo they are in sync again (for the online video). I've tried all sorts of things to get the audio and video to sync up perfectly on the file itself but to no avail. Does anybody have any ideas/tips?

WOW. Sami, that was...awsome. I loved it! I don't know how you got such a shallow depth of field with that camera either; it is gorgeous. Do you have a DOF adapter?

The whole video had such an epic feel and was perfectly edited to the music...Nice Job!

What did you shoot at? 60i?
  • Sami Takieddin 26 days ago
    Thanks Nate. :)

I don't have a DOF adapter (although I really want one). The depth of field was created through locking the focus to a very close object (2 inches away from the camera lense or so)... Macro focus video. This of course won't have practical uses other than shooting very close objects... like it won't make sense to have somebody be 2 inches away from the camera.
  • Sami Takieddin 26 days ago
Also... yup, shot everything at 60i so I could get better slow motion in post.

Just stunning Sami. For me, this is the best HF100 video clip I've seen so far on vimeo. Well done mate!

Really really really impressive, and totally in harmony with the music you chosen! I got a HF10, just about to put some of my first HD vids on vimeo and I'd really love to make somethin' like this!!! I gotta try this as you made with the velocity enveloppe at the beginning, so cool! Put more of your work, I'm a new fan ;-)
  • Sami Takieddin 26 days ago
Thanks Trankilstef :) Go nuts with you HF10, don't be afraid to experiment and put your videos on vimeo for all to see!

Hey sami its amazing to see this work of yours!! Superb! the first 25 seconds of the video (not music) reminded me of the movie Gladiator... walking in the field... just a thought... Your work is impressive!! :)

Sami. Wonderful job. Mind if we ask some specifics on how you shot this? Frame rate..etc.
Is the slow shutter effect purely from slowing down the clip? (velocity) or did you use another technique? Bravo!
  • Sami Takieddin 25 days ago
Thanks Chris. I have added more specifics to the description of the clip.

Very beautiful. Are you using a lens adapter to get the depth of field you shot with?
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks Todd. I don't have a DOF adapter, but I'm planning on getting one soon. I was able to get a shallow depth of field by macro focussing on objects that are 1 to 2 inches away from the lens and then locking the focus.

I wish DOF adapters were in my price range (free). Really nice job editing to the music. I'm super jealous of your talent. I'm getting an HF10, but I'm sure I could never do anything like this.
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks Luke. I don't have a DOF adapter either :)

Honestly, its a lot of observing other people's videos, reading about how to do certain things from various sources around the web, trial and error, experimenting etc... oh yeah, and patience with yourself :)

Don't be afraid to experiment. Go crazy!

Thanks Alex. Yes the video was edited in vegas. Can't wait to get my hands on a real DOF adapter either :) Soon...

  • Dean Fry 25 days ago
beautiful work. As far as slowing and speeding up footage is there any other way to do it in vegas rather than just hold ctrl and drag the clip?
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
    Thanks Dean.

I did it by manipulating the velocity envelope on the clips. That way you have complete control over speeding them up and slowing them down on the timeline. Holding ctrl and dragging the clip will change the speed of the clip, but you wouldn't be able to vary the speed as it plays.

Nice video, but I think the CC was a bit overdone
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks PadawanGeek. Yeah, I ramped it up a bit. Wanted to create a "surreal" look. Still learning the art of CC and grading though. I guess since CC is more art than science, its becomes a matter of taste.

Unbelievable! I've seen similar pictures coming out of my HF100 but to put them in such a crafty manner the way you did, to make them dance to the music, do what you you wished them to do, no questions asked, is simply stunning! Man, this forces me to work way harder on my videos than previously... Great job, Sami!

Thanks Piotr :) I appreciate your very kind words. You know that I like your videos too :)

looks good fella, did you just use vegas to smooth the slowmo if so you should look into twixtor
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks Alex. Yep, used vegas for the slomo. I read up on twixtor and would love to try it out, except that they don't make it for vegas :(

    whats that sound?
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks Zupport. The music track is a cut up version of "The Anhtkythera Mechanism" by BT from the "This Binary Universe" album. BT is one of my favorite musicians. I would highly recommend checking out his music if you have the chance.

    Great Job!

Very subtle blending FX & cuts, nice speedramps (though they seem more to be jump-cutted, but anyway, GREAT), amazing colors, as well as the often mentioned depth of field. Every single element is contributing perfectly to the very intense atmosphere.

This is an outstanding work of art!

    Thx for this very present!
    All the best from Berlin!

One last thing... I bet u used After FX.. right?

    and the track... american beauty?

For sure it is somewhat famous..
  • Sami Takieddin 24 days ago
Thanks for the very kind words Philipp. I really appreciate it.

I actually only used Sony Vegas (for editing) and Magic Bullet Looks (for color correction).

The music track is a cut up version of "The Anhtkythera Mechanism" by BT from the "This Binary Universe" album. I love his work. Would definitely recommend everybody check out his work.

    Dude... thats hauntingly beautiful!
That quick rewind at the end is simply.. Sick.

As for your question about MainConcept mp4 out of sync render, my quick guess and question would be, "Is the audio in reference recorded at 48KHz sample rate?" They're always main culprit for sync problems.

Visiting MainConcept's site on mp4 encoding I see it uses ISO/IEC 14496-2 or H.263 codec. Since Vimeo recommends the use of H.264 codec, I'd try using H.264/AVC Codec available from MainConcept to see if it'd fix the problem. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_2

Cheers and thanks for sharing this vid Sami!

I just recently purchased the HF100 (still waiting for it to be delivered). I was excited to get it before but seeing this got me really hyped up about it. I heard on cnet that the manual focus wasn't all that great but you sure proved them wrong, excellent work!
  • Sami Takieddin 23 days ago
    Thanks jeepgun.

Yeah the HF100 is an exciting little camera :) While manual focus is possible, it is a pain to adjust while filming. Takes some trial an error and some time getting used to, but it can get the job done after some practice with it.

Good luck with your new HF100, and don't forget to post your videos on vimeo for all to see.
