86. I Jumped Into A Lake And Held My Breath For 2 Minu…
4 months ago
There's nothing to see here, move along.

Cliched over-done (ocean themed) food colouring in water, executed in 500X1492 (when Columbus sailed the ocean blue). Created with 8 lit beer glasses, 3 small bottles of food colouring, lots of sweat under the 1K Lowell light kit, sideways shooting, and hours of editing/rendering.

    You are my favorite.
    For real.
  • Psh. whateves. For some reason the quality is heavily deteriorated through the upload. I think it's because it's so giant. Sorry if I break you vimeo.

I love all the parts where you run the footage in reverse. It looks natural, but not.
  • My life is natural but not, so is my love for you.

oh karen, how cool! also it looks even more amazing when you watch it in full screen (with scaling turned on so it fits :)
  • Oh lion, you're totally right. When I tested it the button must have been acting up because I had it off and it look good, but it looks better with it on. Ba boom boom boom bang!

You can turn just about anything into something beautiful. :)
  • I don't know about that, but I sure get bored easily, that's for sure. Gotta keep doing different things.

i've done something like this but with ink.
    looks great.
  • I've done something like this in after effects, but for some reason actually physically making a mess and watching the glasses is so therapeutic.

    :-)
  •
  • matthew strong 4 months ago
yes, i remember it being fun, there is nothing like making something from scratch. (something the video gamers won't know about) and if its messy, all the better. i love the editing in this also, who is the track by? and the title/poem is nice also. karen, its a great video.
  • The track is by : read write speak type
The title...is...well..u know me and titles..hahaa.

I was video gaming while I made this between renders. I was playing some killer Mario Poker on the DS. I was also Odyssey 2 ing it up. haha

thanks matthew you are fantastic !

this is great karen! i watched it in full screen and it was so chilling. although my freezing house helped. ;)
  • It is therapeutic...especially after that debacle the video before this was...haha.

    Thanks a ton Ray.

Nice! I'm working on something that I would consider similar, hopefully I'll have something to show soon.
  • Yeay!!! I can't wait. you are a gentleman of texas. who makes me smile. I did a tall video actually way before I did a wide video months ago, but I thought I'd revisit it with something more substantial than the stop motion flower that I did.

    lol...Loved it, Karen!!! :]
  • For some reason it filled up with water and there were weird colored things sprouting from the ceiling and the ground. Thankfully all my electronics are in plastic bags and didn't get damaged....

Amazing amazing amazing, and I wish I was closer to you so I could 1) Give you a huge hug, and 2) play with food colouring all day.

  • Aww thanks so much Kosma, I'm glad you appreciate the editing, easy to overlook since the blobbies take over. Thanks so much :-)

so okay, weirdest thing. i was at home the other day and was fooling around with final cut and i wanted to make something really bad but had nobody around to be in it - and me, hating being in my own videos was like, hey! i got it. i'll just take glasses of water and drop food coloring into them. then spend a lot of time in post and make it super awesome. i never got around to doing it and then of course today i sign onto vimeo and bam - its already done for me. hahaha.
  • Haha don't let this dissuade you. There's probably hundreds and thousands of videos of food coloring on the internet...the only thing you have to do is put your own twist into it. I actually had this stewing in my brain for about 3 months now, and was going to wait until I got an HD camera to film it...but something bad happened and i never got the HD camera I bought, and never got back the money I used to buy it so I was like, screw it I'll just film it. Also....I was going to animate construction paper birds and crap flying through this mess, but after watching it, I realized it was absolutely too busy as is, so I didn't go forward with it. So, who knows what the crap else you could do with this stuff. Composite it into a wall. Hahaha. At any rate, you're ultra creative, you should still do something with it.
  • nick petrella 4 months ago
hahahaha, thanks! maybe ill still go forward with my food coloring project. you have inspired me karen! lol.

ps. that stinks about your HD camera, i hope it all gets worked out for ya! =)

Yesterday this was marked 'private' when I tried to watch it and I was like, 'Whatevah!'. Glad to see your now showing your privates.

Oh, I like it, it's a very simple idea but with the aspect ratio so wide and vertical and the edit you transform this simple idea in a very beautiful work. Really I like it.
  • I really appreciate your feedback and am thankful you took the time to watch this. It really does mean a lot to me. Thanks Santi.

This Video illustrates your genius. I have often wondered what life would be like if the aspect ratio's the world ha become so familiar with had rotated 90 degrees from the beginning. imagine how different a movie theater would be if it had been designed to showcase a film in this format.

    GREAT JOB!
  • The only tricky thing about this is content...and what you would portray in this aspect ratio. Gosh it would be so overwhelming if movie theaters did this aspect ratio. hee hee

thank for the kind words Chrizzz.

Karen, wonderful work. We have done similar experiments in our Film School on the subject called "special shootings". But your format and editing decorate these shots enormously.
  • Thank you my darling dear friend. Man I would love to do more experiments with actual film. Thank you for your kind words.

This would look sweet projected on some huge pillar or wall at the Olympics or something cool like that.

    great vid and concept.
  • oh man i know I wish i had a projector, it would so awesome. I want to see it huge, instead of composited in real life scenarios, i wanna feel it huge. haha

    if that makes sense

The thing I love about this - whether you meant it or not - is the "depth". Your title mentions the ocean, you create that illusion, then submerge us into your creation.

    Love your work!
  • As ridiculous as this sounds, I actually spend some time carefully coming up with a title to all my experiments/tests.

I really appreciate you in this community. :-) Thank you so much P dizzle.
