Slider video of flowers.

I absolutely love the look of video shot on sliders and dollies. The perspective motion (objects further away seeming to move slower than objects that are closer) creates such an awesome dramatic look. This video is intended to demonstrate and highlight that effect.

One of the purposes of this video was to create a video made 100% with shots on my DIY slider. It was really the first time I was able to get out and spend a lot of time with the slider, so I was testing out various angles and setups.

I sometimes feel that post-production slow-motion is used way too much. Therefore, another goal of this test-run was to ensure that all footage remained as-is (other than minor contrast adjustments). Every segment in this video is the "live" slide (i.e. no slow motion was applied to anything).

Very nice cam movement with the slider! Well done.
That's what I wanted to see for some time: you made my day Andrew :)
    Any picture of your slider?
Despite the slowness in motion, I see that the 24p jitter is present, on wich I was doing some tests. Now I am reassured, it's not me or my settings.
Love it Andrew, now it's up to me...

I added your vid into my BNLgroup to show this to our BNL friends as well.

Hello again Pierre. Thank you for your comments. I won't disagree about jitter, but it appears to be significantly worse when viewed via Vimeo. In other words, playing the file directly via Windows Media Player (for examle) does not appear as extreme as it does here (which is why I try to always provide the download link). On my home PC I don't get that type of jitter, and I will also test it on a totally differnt PC to see the results. I'll probably also attempt a different upload format to see if it looks better through Vimeo.

I do have pictures of my slider, but not necessarily readily available. So, I did the next best thing and added a picture of it to my profile. If you navigate to my Vimeo home page, I think you should see it there. If not, let me know and I can provide it some other way.

    Thanks again.

Oh yes, that picture of the slider is fine. Thnx for that.
Can I ask what tripod you use? Seems small, short and light: good for travel.

For the jitter, at some point I think that the stabilizer also can play a role? I'll try some cam moves without the stabilizer, just to see...

Bogen/Manfrotto 055XPROB with 503HDV head. It isn't what I consider to be a compact tripod... I just have it set as low as possible for more stability when using the slider.

I think I recognize the tripod. My Libec weights around 8Kg(?) with the camera in place and is a 2 stage about 75 cm (?) long closed. Not the thing to travel around. Just looking around for a light, short and stable one. Thank you for the info Andrew.

If I had to do it over I would opt for a tripod with no center post, as it is the main culprit for instability with my tripod... no matter how much I tighten it.

Serene and peaceful, very nice. I want some form of slider/dolly, too. It would be interesting to see how well you could replicate this with a steadycam.
  • Andrew Kufahl 1 year ago
Hi Greg. Thank you. I'm working on another totally different version of slider... definitely more DIY than the one I currently have (cheaper too). But I think it will be much smoother than what I'm currently using (not that my current one is all that bad... because it's actually pretty good for what it cost me to construct).

The steadycam is one of my next ventures, as I made my own DIY version of that as well a couple weeks ago. I know I'll need much more practice with it though before I shoot/post anything. Should be fun though, and offer more flexibility (if I can "master" it).

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Nice job Andrew! I cheated and bought the IndiSlider instead of building my own. Your results are indistinguishable from the very expensive Indislider though!
  • Andrew Kufahl 1 year ago
Thanks Paul. I went back and forth deciding which route to take. I probably did save money (which is always a good thing), but invested a lot of time into research and construction. So, if time is money, it's probably a push. But it's good to know this performs reasonably well when compared to the competition. Thanks again.

nice slider. After 3 years of R&D I have built one myself and am starting sales. If you guys are interested visit my homepage at
    videoslider.com There's pictures and a video clip.

Thanks David. You know you might get better response by posting your video on Vimeo and putting your URL in it's description... as opposed to posting it in these comments where it might not advertised as well... just a thought. Thanks again.

  • Looks great... You did save money without buying the indislider (like myself) but your shots are amazing and so is the movement...very fluid smooth and natural... I really like it.. all in all how much did it cost to build your diy dolly? Est?

Check out some of my indislider vids!!

Thank you for your comments/feedback. I don't remember the exact amount, but I believe final cost was around $230. And I believe that amount includes the $70 quick release ball-head.

If I had to do it over again I would probably go with a bearing design. What I have isn't bad, but some of the bearings I looked at seemed to have much more fluid motion. But like I said, what I have is adequate for now.
