How did you do this? Ive seen each technique used separately, but not all together! Very nice!
  • Chad Richard plus 1 year ago
Hey Aaron. The workflow is a b**ch but yes you can combine it all. I did a pretty detailed blog post of my HDR time-lapse workflow here: chadrichard.typepad.com/timelapse/
with hopes of seeing more people combining HDR & time-lapse.
  • Aaron Esterling 1 year ago
Seems pretty straight-forward, but still a ton of work! You said you used an intervolometer to control the capture sequence but I didn't see anything about what you used to PAN?

Also, do you run into any problems combining the images into an HDR because of the panning, or is it slow enough so that there's no ghosting or anything?

In total, how many individual images did this 19 second video end up combining?
  • Chad Richard plus 1 year ago
Yeah it is a process and because i am using programs interoperably in very non traditional ways i seem to crash more than i would expect along the way.

The Pan is controlled with the Mumford Time Machine and rotary table. Expensive toys and a pain re: power but if you are so inclined i highly recommend the setup. It compensates for shutter release time so it moves then pauses then moves that is why there is no ghosting.

It was about 4,000 photos that made up this sequence. The math was 7 bracketed exposures per HDR still. 30 frames per second for 19 seconds. So... 7 X 30 X 19 = 3,990 exposures. There are other ways to get similar results but.... that is what this was.

very cool, just wish it was longer.
  • Chad Richard plus 1 year ago
Yeah these (20 second) nuggets (that take 3 hours of shooting) end up getting strung together in a longer sequence like this one from the Utah & Arizona trip...

Yeah the sun hid behind the clouds... more cooking now though of some sunsets that cooperated a bit better! Should have one posted by tomorrow.

Much effort, but for a great result!

Wow, very, very cool. Thinking of getting the time machine myself plus the ramped rotary table... you are certainly getting wonderful results out of it.

Have you experimented with creating HDR time-lapse from a single exposure or do you always bracket multiple exposures?
  • Chad Richard plus 1 year ago
John i have not done HDR stuff from a single RAW but you bring up a good point that there is some expirimenaion to be done there. I think if the dynamic range is more moderate (aka no sun) you would have could definitely have decent results. Let me know if you do one!
  • John Graeme Morris 1 year ago
    Hi Chad,
Hoping to do so experiments in the next week or so. Will let you know how I get on.

I like it, It's relaxing. It was interesting to see the people going at that speed. When the pan started I expected a story, If there was one, I'm interested. I missed it. Felt like I was watching life through a painting. I am also a blunt man, so being a filmmaker myself, I will ask permission before saying anything else. I'm pres of Lime Gravy Films

Really cool. I've never seen that beach look so saturated. It's normally quite drab :) HDR works wonders.

Nice work Chad! I've yet to capture the perfect sunset ala HDR like this! The photomatix detail enhancer has it's appeal all dialed up like this but personally I still can't stand the fluctuations in the midtones. That said this shot really reveals the power of the dynamic range and processing.
  • Chad Richard plus 1 year ago
Thanks there is still a great deal to explore but this was a fun one ; - ) More cooking as I type...

Chad I have a few questions, I'm going to buy an electric panning head (bhphotovideo.com/c/product/502557-REG/Vidpro_EBRA_121R_EBRA_121R_Automatic_Motorized_Pan.html)
Can you give me some tips on capturing ??? Like do I pause the panning shoot and resume, or should I just set the panning on the slowest setting and let the intervolometer shoot away ?? Also in Photomatix Pro, do you use the anti-ghosting feature when processing ???
