Update July 15, 2009: I replaced the original file to accomodate Vimeo's new 30p option. So the streaming playback of this video should be much smoother. Download the source file while you still can!

How does the camera look while running with it? At what pan speed will a white picket fence not skew? Can the Sony EX1 film ceiling fans without it looking funky?

These questions are answered in this video.

Note: There was a titling issue for the fan tests. The order of the speeds is Low, Medium and then high for the last two shots.

Nice rolling shutter effect on the fence.

Excellent test! Though is this something you'll really run into unless you are trying to get it? I'm considering this camera for weddings and I just viewed the strobe effects test. However most photographers only really use them in the reception or formal pictures so I wouldn't think it would be that big of deal.

    91st,

If you're panning that fast and zoomed in then you're shooting wrong anyway. Even my mid-fast zoom didn't skew the fence and certainly the slower one didn't either. How often are we panning across picket fences anyhow? LOL!

As far as the strobe test it doesn't really bother me and many videographers are using it without client complaint. Slo-mos with the flashing may make it more apparent but considering the low light abilities, long recording times, clean imagery and shallow depth of field the EX1 is a clear event video winner.

When I shot the B17 aircraft landing with a 1/96 shutter, the props appeared bent due to this phenomenon. Rolling shutter can show up in interesting ways.

Looking at this and other similar RS horror footage, I would not purchase a rolling shutter type of camera with a CMOS sensor. Better off stick with 3CCD design -- those already come with the superior global shutter. Then, there is always motion picture film. ;~)
