The flash duration of a strobe is measured in thousanths of a second and is pretty constant. Random statistical probability determines whether the flash occurs during a CMOS frame readout. Quite a few flashes in this video fell between frame readouts entirely, which is interesting. The Nikon flash unit has a very short flash cycle, but it's interesting how most of the flashes generated did not even register on the video.

Hi Adam this test is very useful. thank you.
I am interested in buying a Z7 but am very cautious of the CMOS rolling shutter. I imagine the Z7 will react very similarily to the EX1. Now that you have had your camera sometime has the flash / strobe problem really been much of an issue for you? and when you say in your test you switch the shutter off - do you mean that it goes to a standard setting of 25 or 30 frames per second. Thanks Simon

    Sorry for my belated reply!

Shutter off means the shutter switch on the EX1 is set to the off position. In some modes it will change the EX1 to 1/24 (24p) or 1/30 (30p). Some people said it helps the strobe issue but I didn't see any evidence of that.

The half-frame flash doesn't bother me and none of my clients have complained. They care more that things aren't dark and that I can record their entire interview/wedding/event/film and not have to hire an assistant to constantly offload memory cards or be tethered to a hard drive recorder.

I haven't used/seen footage from the Z7 so I'm not sure. Maybe some made similar tests for that camera by now elsewhere on Vimeo or YouTube?
