Basic framing and shot composition - in a minute! No point in droning on and on about the Rule of Thirds and all that nonsense, but if you can keep just one idea in mind when setting up your shots, make it this one: Keep it interesting.

Thanks. I totally want to see the LEDs. Still very much into that technology as a hobbyist and clearly where all lighting will be in the next 5 years or so.

The Rule of Thirds is something I've adhered to for almost 25 years; it ought to be tattooed on to every aspiring photographer and filmmaker. There are exceptions, of course, but for 95% of all shots the ROT makes the difference between dull and intereresting. However, I've never seen a technical explanation of WHY (though it's probably related to the Golden Section).

Actually, Golden Sections are something slightly different. I find this stuff quite interesting in a technical way, but I agree with you that that discussion often detracts from the basics that everyone needs to know. And use!

It's so easy, but maybe that's why no one bothers to cover this topic. Here's a great example for skateboarders, however:

Nicely explained. Thanks for including examples from popular movies. It really is interesting now that I've gotten into videography how when I watch a movie now I notice more how a particular shot was made or what techniques they used. Before, just like you said I would just veg and watch.

Thanks again Al. Yea, we really live in a golden age with access to tens of thousands of movies + all the commentaries (which I never have time to watch, 'cause I'm always moving on to the NEXT movie...)

Ah yes Greg, but ever since the Blair Witch Project, every aspiring filmmaker thinks they are clever enough to ignore the rules. The only rule that matters: know the rules BEFORE you attempt to break them and then have a good reason to do so!

    Great work Eric.

Thanks Shaun. My favorite example of what you say is Rodriguez's "10 Minute Film School" where he tells all the kids to go handheld and don't use a tripod... yet 99% of the examples from his movies that he shows during the "class" are on a tripod, dolly, jib, etc.

I believe you are referring to 10min Film school vol.1 on El Mariachi, which was filmed mostly handheld (in 24fps, LOL) and is why he says on vol. 1 to go handheld. The crane/jib & dolly came after he sold his 1st movie to Columbia and got the big budget for Desperado.

    Nice stuff by the way

Wow! I`m using the rule of thirds since I read a Design Book, in fact, I have my Photoshop with that grid, It`s very useful in order to get a good composition.

"you can't break the rules if you don't know what they are"....one of the smartest piece of advice that i've come across in a long while.
