I woke up this morning, for no reason, at 4 am. I decided to walk to the bank to deposit a check. I saw a lot of birds out enjoying the empty streets.

Music by 'The Soul's Release :)

PS. I know it's kinda lame this is in 2.35:1, but I just wanted to play around with my new HF10 in wide-wide screen :P

    Thank you for this!

It was just what I needed on this tired Monday morning.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
I'm glad it helped your monday :) it was nice to be up that early... I should drag myself out of bed in time to see the sunrise more often.

I'm on a horrible sleep schedule these days, but one of the nice things is being up when the sun rises and the birds start to wake up (as well as the cicada right now).

I loved the little yellow bird and the puddle was great, I was waiting for a pebble to be thrown or something but then you focused on the reflection and I was like, "oh my, even better (and smiled)"
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
It's a bummer when your sleep habits get all out of whack :P it's kinda annoying to roll over at 4:30 and realize you're wide awake for not reason.

Yea I love birds - and they were *everywhere* :)

I took a bunch of footage of that little yellow bird - he kept jumping from branch to branch for me for the longest time.

    I'm glad you smiled ;)

Not lame at all - wonderfully quiet. I love being the only person awake in my neighborhood @ 5 am on a Sunday and here, you got it.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Dan :) the streets being so empty was very, very wonderfully quiet... it's an interesting time to be awake in Los Angeles.

there truly is beauty in everything. even a homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk.

    this was great :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks :) I had walked past several homeless people sleeping all bundled up with their belongings next to them - I'm glad I stopped to film this man because he was last I saw on the way home...

I wish more of my taxes went to helping people not have to sleep on the sidewalk... instead of war-related-nonsense... but I guess that's a different rant for a different post :P

    Thanks!

The aspect ratio isn't lame at all. I kinda like it :)

As long as you think about it while recording, so that you don't end up cutting important things off...

Is the bank open that early? or am I missing something here?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks! I was kinda' sorta thinking about it when I was walking around - but I really just quickly ran through when throwing this together and adjusted the clips that cit off things :)

The bank wasn't open - I just went to use the ATM... I never go in the bank :P it frighten and confuses me.

Lame aspect ratio? Perfect art! Well done. I did not believe, a HF10 could deliver this quality ;-)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Gregor :) Yea, I've been really, really happy with the HF10 so far - I had to sell my Z1u and this is my replacement camera. I'm very impressed with it.

Mike, I just got a HF100 shoot in Cine mode FXP. I've noticed I need to turn up the contrast in post about 30% for a better look. What settings did you use during filming? What kind of enhancements in editing?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
This is actually really the first thing I've filmed with this camera and then did anything with in FCP - I've only had it about 2 weeks. I didn't really mess with the contrast, but I probably should have :P

I just had on P mode this morning - just cause I was walking around and trying to get to the bank before I got really, really hungry. And it was on FXP... I think 24p too... but I need to check, cause I needed to de-interlace... or if I didn't, I thought it looked like I did :P

And in FCP I just did a 3-way color correction with darker blacks, brighter mids and more saturation... some of the shots it looks like it's too much...
  • charliesteadman 1 year ago
Your clip looks great and I want mine to look so good.
    I will give a 3-way, THE 3-way color correction a try.
    Thank you!

Great Video....I did really like....just quick question....what do you mean with "wide-wide screen" and how did you get that 2:35:1 aspect , maybe thru FCE? or the camera has another option that I dont know about it.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Jariverap :) I'm still learning that myself - I asked a question about in this forum vimeo.com/pedal/forumtopic:705, and have gotten a lot of great tips. Let me know if you have more questions... but the quick answer is, it's done in post :)

I also got the HF10, in the "grass-clip" how do you change the focus from far away to close?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Jasa :) You can use your little joystick on the LCD screen - if you push it down a little option will pop up.
  • JasaInc plus 1 year ago
    Spank you very much!

Mike- you have a lovely photographic eye and sense of storytelling. This video would have been at a another level with a tripod.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Candace :) Yea, I thought that a few times: "damn, why didn't I bring a tripod on my walk to the ATM" :P I thought about running 'smoothcam' on some of the shots but I didn't have time.
  • Candace Barbot 1 year ago
    Hi Mike:
Check out this cool item for walks to the ATM. I bought one this year. Very liberating. Smooth fluid-type head. Lightweight and portable:
Bogen - Manfrotto Video Monopod with Fluid Head, Black Anodized, with Quick Release

The 561B is a 4-section aluminum monopod. It is equipped with a fluid head able to support up to 8.8 lbs. The key feature of this monopod is the fluid cartridge incorporated into the base that gives you an incredibly smooth panning action. Closed it reaches the compact size of 29.92". The fluid video head (similar to the 701RC2) features a new sliding plate which was made ad-hoc for this model. The ergonomic pan-bar allows smooth panning and tilting movements. Small and lightweight. The three retractable feet ensure a firm footing, and of course the fluid cartridge helps Videographers obtain superior images. (Approx. $200.00 // Bought it thru Amazon.com)

I loved the puddle shot. I was waiting for the focus pull on whatever the object was and it didn't disappoint.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Ashley :) I was bummed cause when I squatted down to do that shot, there was a bird in that tree on the branch, but it flew away by the time I could take it.

it's actually much cooler, and might've been a bit more lame otherwise. ;)

There is something about this video that just captivates me. I don't know if its the eery quiet of a busy city, or the shots of nature making a new home in its cement city. I don't know, i just like it. Nice song too.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
*shrug* I'm very surprised so many people liked it as much as they did :P it did feel very strange to see the streets so quiet with the sun up, that and all the birds *everywhere* :)

Hey Monika :) It's been a long time, I'm glad you seem happy in Warsaw, short of missing the sunshine here in LA ;)

I'd love to see a video of you going for a walk in Warsaw.
  • Monika Brozyna 1 year ago
...and short of missing my friends :) Expect the video, but I'm am so pleasantly unsettled right now and have been going to bed no earlier than 4am that i'm missing out on the mornings so I can't say when. I guess I'll keep it a surprise... how come you're not on skype anymore-darn-it?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
You could always go for a late walk in Warsaw ;) a 4am walk...

I know - I need to set Skype to open up on login, I guess I took it off when I started using iChat all the time.

Yea :P I'm really impressed with my little cam's macro lens and rack-focus ability :) It's only the size of a coke can, but it's got an awesome little lens in there.

I liked the sprinklers too - they felt good on my feet.
