I've admired all of your work and this is your best. I don't like all the title screens and credits, but that's just me.

Work like this speaks for itself.
  •
  • Troglored 3 months ago
And then at the end, where you SHOULD have credits and such, they scroll too fast.

Don't get me wrong. This is great work.

Great stuff. althought I personally I am not fond of the vignetting and I think it takes away from the quality of being in HD. But man you are a master of the jumps I cant tell you how many times I did!

as ive said with your previous posts with this short i loved though i thought some scenes were very soft.
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
Thanks! They were indeed....:/ but you learn i suppose. I was using the lcd to set focus(on the hv20) so maybe that maybe the causing issue.
  • Marty Wichtmann 3 months ago
ahh.. yes i did that when i was doing my 35mm adaptor tests... i'd be lost without my 720p monitor. Keep up the good work. cant wait for your next flick. keep all of us over at hv20.com updated.
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
will do my friend, by the way, what kind of monitor you using?I am looking into getting a monitor and wasn't sure what to look into or get, any recommendations? thanks Marty!

  • Marty Wichtmann 3 months ago
not sure of the make now.. but its a 10.6 720p kit that i had to build a case around.

You mentioned something about this being expanded into a feature? Can you elaborate upon this?
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
yes, i can elaborate to a certain point. I'm personally not allowed to talk about the feature at all, but i can't hide the excitement.

What i can say is- "we were funded to film a feature. Right now the pre-production is at hand. The new feature has a whole new story to it. Completely new. We are looking to start production in October. As well as maybe auditions in September...So far that is all i'm allowed to say. (actually i'm not supposed to be releasing the audition info either) As equipment goes i could name off some equipment we have at hand for the feature.

This is the perfect grindhouse film. What did you use for all the ambient sound and music composition?
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
    haha thanks Sage!
The ambient sounds and music was a mix.
For example. Some sounds were purposely added from on set recordings with reverb, dealy, and a a phaser to have some weird distant drones, as well as i used DSFX from Co-Pilot and have a collection of sounds from Sony Pictures Sound Libraries.Drums were recorded in my garage and some used form co-pilot. I am a drummer, in that band you hear playing when i am walking down the street up to that car. That is myspace.com/foreverintheend of which i attempt to play drums for them haha

Great job, Ryan. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

    Well heres my opinion:
Your a great director as this film had some kind of flow. The story itself wasnt all that great. It had nothing in it. The whole middle part would be ok to put in a full length movie, not a short film where we dont even begin to learn who the characters are. The story does not have much depth in it. Its pretty basic, as if most of the time were spent on shooting and editing rather than the writing. It had a couple of jumps but honestly throughout it I was wondering if anything exciting was going to happen. The acting was very well done. The sound effects, some of em were good some of em were just overdoing it. As for the twoneil DOF adapter, although it may give you a 'filmlook', I personally learned to do without it. It makes the overall image very dark and shallow. It pretty much takes out the high definition of the video and makes it seem as if you used a cheap DV camera. All those dust grains and noise on the focusing screen don't help the image either. I didnt like the constant shaking of the camera. It seems like for most of it you didnt use a tripod, which maybe intentional, but did not look good. I know for a short film done by a few people, it would have been hard to dress up all those extras as actual zombies. But the zombies in there were just not scary, the camera shook too much to cover that, but you just made it noticable. Once again I think this would have looked much better without the DOF adapter. So overall I think if you were given a better script you would have done a good job with it, but this story was just boring. I make films too and I know how personal you may take some comments, especially after spending so much time on the film. Overall I give this film a 5.5/10. I think you can do much better than this. You're a good filmmaker but you need a better story and to get rid of the DOF lens and adapter until you can afford a professional one. Good luck with your future projects...
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
Thank you. All in reality, it was my first. I learned alot on what to do and what not to do haha and you named a whole bunch of them exactly on the dot.We are doing a feature, we will be using "pro" cameras,35mm lenses, and equipment. So the story will be much more exciting and more time to develop characters and a story. I wasn't offended from your honest criticism. Without it you can never improve. so thanks man.

What do you mean a feature? Gonna be released in theateres or dvd or something or just a full length movie for fun?
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
we are doing a full length film, probably released on DvD but not nationally or anything.
Just for fun, you know take it to festivals and all that fun stuff if it comes out okay.

besides the obvious technical issues (focus, ghosting, etc), I think you're actually a VERY talented kid.

This thing was more intense than most real films in this genre. If you can combine your obvious talent with a good story and good acting, I think you could do something potentially megacool.

I for one wish you the best of luck Ryan, and look forward to more. :)
  • Ryan Matthew 3 months ago
Wow! Thanks Ayz! I am personally a fan of your work so it's an honor to here that from you! Thanks...:)

no problem. just stumbled on this and thought it showed A LOT of potential.

    good luck with the feature

  • Joe Moya 3 months ago
Very good first time attempt... in fact, far better than average in IMO... but, horror/zombie films are done to death IMO... but, yours was an honest attempt to make it cinematic-like in production... which is very difficult to do. You chose a difficult filming road to go down... and, for that your efforts are admirable.

BTW, I believe your voice overs sometimes don't match the scene... specially when the actress' mouth is not moving, but the voice over is talking in her voice. Good voice over syncing/matching during the edit is a VERY difficult process to do... and, you only get good at this process by doing more. And, it seems you are definately going to get much better as you progress through this whole film editing process.

No matter the outcome... no matter the criticism or praise given today... this will definitely be a positive learning experience that will have value in the long-term.

Keep up the good work... and congrats on your new film-baby.

I really liked it. I'm guessing you're a film student?

Anyway, besides me disliking zombie movies, you did a solid job. The one thing I would have changed would be the running sequences. I'm not sure if you used like an echo effect to create more confusion and blur, but i think it would look better just a tad less shaky and a bit more clear. It almost looks like you intentionally shook the camera more than just the motion of running with it.

Of course, if you're going for that look, you nailed it.

    Great Job on the film.
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
Hey Jamie! Thanks for your comment. The ghosting on the running scene hurts me every time i see it, it bugs me too. It's the after math of me experimenting with shutter speeds for the first time in my life. haha. I showed up on set and changed the shutters without ever doing test and all that stuff. So i know exactly what you mean.
    Thanks man!

Hey, nice to be able to get such a large team together to do this stuff!
As posted above, maybe you can improve the script to get a bit more depth to it
Technically your special effects (gun fire, blood ) looks a bit too cheap to me ;-) Also the video is a bit too shaky and seems to suffer from de-interlacing and other artefacts.

hey man, this film is sweet! what equipment are you going to use on the full length?
  •
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
Thanks Stephen! On the full length we will be using my XH-A1+Letus setups. Nothing fancy but far better than my setup for this short haha.
  •
  • Stephen Traskal 2 months ago
cool man, but this movie does not look like you were using the hv20, like that dolly shot when your looking into the red truck on the abandoned street, that look amazing for some reason. yea but, how long did it take you to save for that camera?
  •
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
Thanks man! But yeah, that whole scene in that downtown aree was all the naked HV20. Beautiful little machine.

And the camera, i was saving for a couple months then finally had a little extra grant money left over from school,
so i went for it and bought it!

  •
  • Stephen Traskal 2 months ago
yea thats cool though right now im saving for the hv30. i have a sript for a film and everything i just need the camera. but yea the A1 is a sweet camera.
  •
  • Noah A. Sampsel 2 months ago
You are incredible man. I have a hv30 along with a ton of gear I saved up for, and am working on a feature film right now. I will be uploading stuff on here soon. Are you going to go to film school man?
  •
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
haha thanks Noah. I've always wanted to buy an HV30 as a B-Camera along side my A1 for it's lovely features of 30f.I was a little upset cause after i bought my HV20 the 30 came out, but it's okay, Canon makes osme beautiful camera eh? So do you have any previews yet of your feature yet? I mean like any shorts or anything on it? I would love to check it out.

I would love to go to film school, but i can't afford it and for some reason i feel they would reject me anyway...my work probably isn't impressive to them.
  •
  • Noah A. Sampsel 2 months ago
    Hey bro,
Yes the hv30 is an amazing camcorder, I dont use 30p much, but there are alot of new features on the hv30.
Im sure alot of film schools would accept you. You should look into the one Im going to. CompassFilmAcademy.com It is a christian film academy, and they are all about mentorship, which means when you complete their program they hook up in the film making industry and find you a job as soon as your done with their program. It is much cheaper than a regular school man. So you should look into it, youll love it. I promise.....Ill have a preview on here soon, I will be sure to let you know.

  • Stefan K 2 months ago
Well done, but Ive got a question: Did you use a different lens (a wider?) in the sequence from 3:29 to 5:52 or how did you manage to enlarge the DOF that much, most of the pictures I see with 35mm adapters have a really small DOF?
    cheers,
    Stefan
  • Ryan Matthew 2 months ago
    Thank you.
Those scenes were shot without, the adapter. So that's probably why.:)

  • Ryan Matthew 22 days ago
Haha we ran a tube down her arm with scotch tape and had someone on the other end with blood in the tube blowing in the other end. If you look close you can see her holding her wrist but really she is holding the tube. ha!

Hey Matt, thank you!! I didn't use Film Magic Pro. But i am thinking i should now that i actually checked out others footage with it. It looks amazing! If only we lived closer i'm sure we would do great things ha!

I'm really impressed! Your camera shots/angles were right on. I love the blured, rush feel to the movie. Has a surreal feeling to it. What type of dolly are you using? Is it DIY? I used StudioFX for the gun shot flares and it's real awsome. Only thing, I had the trial version, so it wasn't much, but great to experiment with. Good shit man, can't wait to see more of your work.
