Work like this speaks for itself.
Don't get me wrong. This is great work.
-Ryan
What i can say is- "we were funded to film a feature. Right now the pre-production is at hand. The new feature has a whole new story to it. Completely new. We are looking to start production in October. As well as maybe auditions in September...So far that is all i'm allowed to say. (actually i'm not supposed to be releasing the audition info either) As equipment goes i could name off some equipment we have at hand for the feature.
The ambient sounds and music was a mix.
For example. Some sounds were purposely added from on set recordings with reverb, dealy, and a a phaser to have some weird distant drones, as well as i used DSFX from Co-Pilot and have a collection of sounds from Sony Pictures Sound Libraries.Drums were recorded in my garage and some used form co-pilot. I am a drummer, in that band you hear playing when i am walking down the street up to that car. That is myspace.com/foreverintheend of which i attempt to play drums for them haha
Great job, Ryan. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Your a great director as this film had some kind of flow. The story itself wasnt all that great. It had nothing in it. The whole middle part would be ok to put in a full length movie, not a short film where we dont even begin to learn who the characters are. The story does not have much depth in it. Its pretty basic, as if most of the time were spent on shooting and editing rather than the writing. It had a couple of jumps but honestly throughout it I was wondering if anything exciting was going to happen. The acting was very well done. The sound effects, some of em were good some of em were just overdoing it. As for the twoneil DOF adapter, although it may give you a 'filmlook', I personally learned to do without it. It makes the overall image very dark and shallow. It pretty much takes out the high definition of the video and makes it seem as if you used a cheap DV camera. All those dust grains and noise on the focusing screen don't help the image either. I didnt like the constant shaking of the camera. It seems like for most of it you didnt use a tripod, which maybe intentional, but did not look good. I know for a short film done by a few people, it would have been hard to dress up all those extras as actual zombies. But the zombies in there were just not scary, the camera shook too much to cover that, but you just made it noticable. Once again I think this would have looked much better without the DOF adapter. So overall I think if you were given a better script you would have done a good job with it, but this story was just boring. I make films too and I know how personal you may take some comments, especially after spending so much time on the film. Overall I give this film a 5.5/10. I think you can do much better than this. You're a good filmmaker but you need a better story and to get rid of the DOF lens and adapter until you can afford a professional one. Good luck with your future projects...
-Ryan
Just for fun, you know take it to festivals and all that fun stuff if it comes out okay.
keep up the good work.
This thing was more intense than most real films in this genre. If you can combine your obvious talent with a good story and good acting, I think you could do something potentially megacool.
I for one wish you the best of luck Ryan, and look forward to more. :)
good luck with the feature
BTW, I believe your voice overs sometimes don't match the scene... specially when the actress' mouth is not moving, but the voice over is talking in her voice. Good voice over syncing/matching during the edit is a VERY difficult process to do... and, you only get good at this process by doing more. And, it seems you are definately going to get much better as you progress through this whole film editing process.
No matter the outcome... no matter the criticism or praise given today... this will definitely be a positive learning experience that will have value in the long-term.
Keep up the good work... and congrats on your new film-baby.
Joe
Anyway, besides me disliking zombie movies, you did a solid job. The one thing I would have changed would be the running sequences. I'm not sure if you used like an echo effect to create more confusion and blur, but i think it would look better just a tad less shaky and a bit more clear. It almost looks like you intentionally shook the camera more than just the motion of running with it.
Of course, if you're going for that look, you nailed it.
Great Job on the film.
Thanks man!
-Ryan
I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. Good Stuff.
As posted above, maybe you can improve the script to get a bit more depth to it
Technically your special effects (gun fire, blood ) looks a bit too cheap to me ;-) Also the video is a bit too shaky and seems to suffer from de-interlacing and other artefacts.
-Ryan
And the camera, i was saving for a couple months then finally had a little extra grant money left over from school,
so i went for it and bought it!
I would love to go to film school, but i can't afford it and for some reason i feel they would reject me anyway...my work probably isn't impressive to them.
Yes the hv30 is an amazing camcorder, I dont use 30p much, but there are alot of new features on the hv30.
Im sure alot of film schools would accept you. You should look into the one Im going to. CompassFilmAcademy.com It is a christian film academy, and they are all about mentorship, which means when you complete their program they hook up in the film making industry and find you a job as soon as your done with their program. It is much cheaper than a regular school man. So you should look into it, youll love it. I promise.....Ill have a preview on here soon, I will be sure to let you know.
cheers,
Stefan
Those scenes were shot without, the adapter. So that's probably why.:)
