A collection of shots done with the Letus Extreme and my newest toy, the IndiSlider. Moves are silky smooth, but going from 1080p 30fps down to 720p 24fps has made it somewhat jerky. All shot with my Sony V1U camera. Video on the Indislider can be found here:

Great job Paul. Your newest toy looks to be a keeper... nice slides. I like the tempo of the piece too. You really do the V1 justice.

Thanks Andrew. I wish the slides looked better on here. I think it's the 30p to 24p conversion. It is tricky to get a super smooth slide with the IndiSlider. It tends to "catch" here and there. Especially with the weight of the camera, rails, Letus and Nikon lens. That makes the whole rig close to 15 lbs! By "catch" I mean it just slows down ever so slightly once in a while along the 3' length.

Greetings Paul, I also have the same issues with the IndieSlider. They sent me a different set of inserts, yet they still have sticky spots. I am using an Sony EX1, Brevis 35, matte box and follow focus for a total of 18LBS. I have talked to a couple of people in linear motion to see if there is a better way. I REALLY like the way the footage looks when the slider is used, just not happy with the sticky motion. Yuo made a corn feild look great - WELL DONE !

Thanks Rick, if you come up with a better way, let me know! I have had good luck by wiping down the rails with lens cloth just before shooting. I'm thinking of trying a rag with furniture or floor polish on it to "grease the skids" so to speak!

Very nice. I've been looking at that IndiSlider for a while but have yet to find a video that describes its use.

The part that goes on top of the rails - will that head go on a tripod as a 'standard' fluid head? (without the slider, I mean).

What tread size does the IndiSlider have? (to mount it to the headless tripod). Which lengh version do you use? what about weight when the camcorder+Letus+lens is at one end of the slider?
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
Forgot to hit the post button :) Still curious, though...
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
I had many of the same questions. I'll try and make a video this weekend showing all it can do since I just got an EX1 and am looking for something to shoot! I also mount mine rather unconventionally. I mount it to my tripod plate instead of direct to the sticks. It gives me much more options. Look back over the weekend for a video describing it's use.

Very nicely done, Paul, shows exactly what can be achieved. Now I'd love an IndiSlider but it seems like an awful lot of money for what is essentially a metal rail.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
It's a very sturdy and well engineered metal rail! I'll have a video soon showing it's use.

Hey, that's great, I'd like to see that.

Wow! Beautiful I love how you're able to capture each image that brings such emotion. The music you use is outstanding Who composes it?
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Thanks Lacey! The music is from Digital Juice. It's buyout music, once you buy it, you own it and can use it for almost anything. Plus the cost is very reasonable, and it's layered! You can remove the drums if you don't like them, or the guitars, the piano etc...This tune is called ENCHANTED.

Superb! Great colors too! Did you CC or is it straight from the V1U?
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Did a little CC in FCP using the 3 way CC. Not every shot, just to match color levels on a few of them. I have tweeked the V1 to give me the look I want by adjusting the Picture Profiles. Mostly boosting color and warming up the white balance. Though the Letus adds a warm look when added.

Paul - that's excellent, really well done. It gives me inspiration for what I might achieve with my V1. The music really suits it too.

dude this looks awesome, What if we took this concept and extended it? like connected several sliders and put tripods on either side? you could have like a long track dolly with less setup... maybe.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
The only problem would be the connection between them. It probably wouldn't be smooth. There would be a bump.
  • ChriZZZ Emerson 1 year ago
Yeah you would probly have to cut two of them and weld them together and then mill down the connection and use a micrometer to make sure that the joint was exactly the same as everything else, cause if you wanted to do a shot while zoomed, the tiniest bump could mess you up. haha i guess it would be easier just to use a regular dolly, haha

the use for that device seems pretty limited to me. the only advantage it has over a dolly is a smaller footprint, and the ability to be made level on a tripod where a dolly wouldn't work. but there are already other slider-type of rigs that seem to do the same thing just fine. i mean it looks good, but a little too narrow in its application IMO
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Don't forget that this can be set up in under 30 seconds! I don't know of any dolly and track system that can be set up in that short of time! Or act as a mini-jib (see Indislider Insight video). Those are two very big advantages over a regular dolly and track system.
  • DeAndre' Vidale 1 year ago
yea i watched the Inisght video before i watched this one. the reduced setup time is definitely a plus. the mini-jib is a stretch though. i escapes me how one would take advantage of the camera being able to move in that "mini-jib" motion you showed. but nonetheless, if you don't need to truck or dolly too far, the Indislider looks like a good option.

Wow! Brilliant! I love the indyslider moves! They look incredible! Feature film style!

Note: I must get a letus extreme for my V1!

Oh...and I really liked the shot at 1:33

How do you pull focus and move the indislider at the same time?
  • Paul Frederick 11 months ago
    Jon,

It's quite tricky. Just an old fashioned twist of the wrist and practive it a few times if possible, noting the position of your hand at the stop! Really I need to get a follow focus with marking my start and end positions. But...this works OK too.

i really like the video man. i just got an indislider myself when i slide it left and right you can feel the metal in your head give a little bit not making it perfectly smooth. but i dont know , did you have the same problem?anyways your footage really made it look like an awesome tool.
  • Paul Frederick 11 months ago
I, and a few others have noted the slight catches if you will along the whole slide length. It's tough to do one perfectly smooth. I use a counter top cleaner on the rods before I use it. It's a polish and it makes the rods super slippery. It's mentioned further up in the comments. Lets face it though, this is a $500 or so device! For the cost, you can do some amazing things with it! WAY quicker and easier to use then a full-on dolly system.

Try Molybdenum Disulfide Powder. It's a sub-micron dust that lubricates and adheres to metallic objects. It's used in aircraft and snipers use it on bullets. It's like Graphite powder, but UNLIKE Graphite powder it does NOT corrode aluminum when wet. And MDP is way more effective. The only drawback is that you really wanna avoid skin contact... lol. I suggest dry lubricants because liquids don't bond to the surface on such a micro level.

    Very nice video Paul.

I like the camera movements you have done using the indislider, they are amazing.

I have a question regarding the letus and the sony camera.

I myself have the same camera and same letus35 extreme. I am wondering, do you use the 24p progressive mode when filming? or do you keep this option turned off?... i use it when filming and have noticed that the frames in between each other are quite blurry and im wondering if this is from using the 24p progressive mode.

    Thanks
    Sam
  • Paul Frederick 10 months ago
I keep it turned off. I do a lot of stuff for TV, so it's easier to just use 60i or 30p. I find with the V1 that the progressive modes can look odd in that there is a noise pattern that shows up in smooth areas. I've heard it described as an "oil paint" effect. It depends on the Serial # of your camera as to if it has it or not. Check out DVINFO.net for more info. Search the V1 forum for "Oil Paint effect".
