this happened yesterday on the beach in delray beach florida. The guy in the wetsuit is Andy Hurdman, one of the top ranked kiteboarders in the world.

I had been watching videos and the ensuing comments that mentioned how it was still important for vimeo to show those random windows into everyday life in addition to planned out clips. THis happened when i was trying to capture a moment of typical life down here, except it went kind of haywire.

wow. it's one of those things where you think you're a bad ass because you've gone shark fishing before or taken a hook out and then being careful and common sense fly out the window. did the shark live?
  • Jimi Heffernan plus 3 years ago
yeah the shark was fine..i don't know if you guys can see it, but after the bite, andy got that handle into the shark's mouth, bracing him and allowing him to pull out the hook. then andy sortof pushed him back into the ocean and he swam off.
  • Amanda 3 years ago
Aw, good. I wasn't even worried about the guy, I was just like "That poor shark :("
  • noshoes 3 years ago
The shark now has an insatiable appetite for human blood keep your eye on the national news for the future headlines describing terror at Delray Beach.
  • Hah, that thing was like three feet long - the only humans that need to worry are going to be those superhuman babies that swim 100 feet out into the surf. Yeah, I haven't heard any stories about them either.

my sympathies are with the shark.
  • Jimi Heffernan plus 3 years ago
i don't have much sympathy for the shark, being as he was released and wasn't harmed, but i have zero for greg, the guy who was bit.
  • Alex Itin plus 3 years ago
Next time you bite into a cheeseburger and find yourself hauled around by a hook and line for three hours, see if you feel you weren't harmed.

The shark had a fucking miserable afternoon... is all I'm saying.

Still, I'm glad the shark and chris came out of it relatively not dead.
  • Jimi Heffernan plus 3 years ago
i wouldn't argue with that, but i don't think this is lasting damage.
  • Alex Itin plus 3 years ago
sure, probably no lasting damge...but I'm talking about a feeling....Sympathy... and which playerin this video got mine... The shark has mine in this story. It seems bewildered... a fish out of water story I guess.

congrats on the media cross over.

Wow. Definitely something I wouldn't normally see!

I thought you did a really good job of filming it - you caught all the action on video, but you weren't too close. If you were too close you would not only have been in danger but possibly made people do things for the camera that they wouldn't normally do, just by being there. Not that Greg wasn't a bit stupid anyway.

I can't believe they went back in again after all that!

Good filming, and thanks for sharing.
  • Jimi Heffernan plus 3 years ago
and just think how much better it would've been if i had known about the wind-canceling function of my camcorder!

Well, I am the mother of Greg who managed to have his hand swallowed by the black tip shark. I have watched the clip numerous of times and find myself with a different reaction each time. I was impressed by the footage, especially the shark pulling the boat toward shore. Fortunately I picked him up from the beach that evening and was able to observe the wounds. He was very lucky. But I must comment on Andy's comment during the interview about Greg's feeling commitment to remove the hook. He has fished his entire life and believes strongly about catch & release. Andy was truly the fortunate one since he was bending over the head of the shark with only inches between his handsome face and the shark mouth when he BIT the line in two. So as I see it, they were acting on adrenaline with the group multiplying around them. Greg's hand is healing well. What can I say.....it's a guy thing.
  • Jimi Heffernan plus 3 years ago
i quite agree, a guy thing indeed, i saw greg today, his hand looks great, im glad there was no lasting damage or anything!
  • CTD3 3 years ago
He is one very lucky man.

its a fair point, but debating the merits of fishing as a sport deserves a forum, not a comment thread.

yeah im going to shoot a vidblog about what has happened with this video, but to summarize:
    it is being shown on:
    the local abc affiliate
    abc national news
    cnn
and the fox show 'inside edition' is interviewing me, andy and greg tomorrow.

all for a pretty silly occurrence...

Some of us live for the moment, catching sharks, kayaking class IV-V whitewater, jumping out of airplanes. Sometimes you get a little to close and you learn something. Greg was not being stupid, he was in a challenge with himself to get the hook out without being bit. He's my nephew and I know him as well as any friend. He a tough young man who was an honor student in high school and college. Some of you live in background, while Greg lives upfront. He learned something. Maybe you did too!! Please post a caveman picture, for I'm sure your comment will be more superior.
  • Andrew Pile staff 3 years ago
So "some of us don't have to hurt animals... for the sake of adventure" isn't a judgment?

Here's what I saw in the video:

Someone was fishing. They caught a shark. Then Greg hurt himself trying to save the shark.

Where exactly does Greg "hurt animals for adventure" or put anyone else in danger?

i sw this on the news earlier. that's some nutty stuff.

i once saw a shark swim into knee deep water to snatch up a five year old. the mother of the kid snatched the kid to safety.

once the shark realized that the kid was gone, it slithered it's way back into deeper waters.

    nutty.

Hah, a nice catch on both accounts! The video and the shark, glad they put it back in the ocean though ;). I thought maybe the guy was gonna hook the kite boarder, that would have been even more exciting than the shark!

  •
  • john logioco 5 months ago
from a fisherman's perspective there were some major mistakes here, 1.) no pliers or dehooker on board, 2.) trying to use your fingers on a shark without covering his eyes will bring human blood every time, 3.) landing a shark on a beach with bathers/surfers etc. poor judgement in almost every case. These guys keep it up and more serious injuries to them or others are in the cards. Personally I don't like to see fisherman being so irresponsible so I hope by now they have taken note. In any case great video - it's really a clip on what not to do.
