For months I've been taping reflections in water and some of the shots made it to this video I created to a spoken word piece by Elisabeth Warren. The poem "Waiting" appears to be about having to sign papers to put parents on life support should the need arise but as you will hear, it goes into so much more.

I felt a cinematic approach to the track was in order when I first heard the spoken word and treated it like a conversation from a telephone or answering machine. I did the track 5 months ago. The visuals came more recently.

The poem is powerful and raw, and the words deserve to be understood... The EQ in the beginning is effective - someone across the globe, with a foreign accent, pouring her heart out while life outside rolls on in its cycle...

However, it gets somewhat hard on the ear after a bit, I have to strain to catch the words.

Maybe if the transition to "real" is very gradual, you won't lose the feeling which is established in the beginning...

But then again... do stick to your guns and your artistic vision. Its good work.

ah ha- understood- and that's a good point -- I've gotten so used to mix and also used to her accent which is super aussie but I am going to try a mix of a gradual -- lessing of the telephone fx- thanks Robin that is a great idea

Stunning images. The shimmering reflections are fantastic, and actually seem to compliment the jagged scope of the raw brutality of the poem. Although, I feel black and white could have been utilized. But, then again I love black&white.

I loved this. I think the music was perfect and I actually liked the voice of the poem.

I'd love to do something like this with Anne Sexton's "Music Swims Back To Me." It would have to be full of haunting images though, imo.

OMG do it she is so fantastic - BTW how would you work visually - "four ladies, over eighty, in diapers every one of them" that's a hard one... Thanks for the comment
  • Paul Davis plus 1 year ago
I was actually thinking about this:

    "Imagine it. A radio playing
    and everyone here was crazy.
I liked it and danced in a circle.
    Music pours over the sense
    and in a funny way
    music sees more than I."

That would have to be visually haunting...especially knowing that she mentally tortured herself for so long.

Oh that is even better to just concentrate on that portion- I think you could pull it off - with your super 8 - I'm so jealous
  • Paul Davis plus 1 year ago
hehe.....three super 8 camera's, a brand new projector, and transfer system (cuts my costs by half or better). ;)

Oh wow Maria - I am in love with this! The voice and music drives it and the visuals are fantastic. I just got an HV 30 day before yesterday(which I am not worthy of) and If I could capture a 10th of the quality that is here I would be happy in this hobby of mine.

Great creative work! Thanks for sharing this with me - I am inspired.
  • MariaNYC plus 1 year ago
hahahah whacu talkin about? LOL your horror flicks are going to be awesome with that cam. I'm jealous an HV30 --though I can't see the difference yet between the 20 and the 30 . thanks for stopping by!
  • Dan Huston plus 1 year ago
Ha! The only true difference is that the 30 is cheaper - only very simple upgrades were made - go figure......
  • MariaNYC plus 1 year ago
Cheaper? Nooooooo lol don't say that I thought the HV20 cost too much considering the 24p is a crock of shit lol though I can't complain it's not bad. I want the red consumer though I 'm kind of over the canon crap.

I have always loved this piece by Elsabeth on iCompositions. Now that the video is done, it's even more powerful. Love the anonymity of the imagery juxtaposing a powerful subject and then the background music is awesome too.

    Excellent work my dear! Excellent!

WOOW this is fantastic work Maria. I love it. My only critic is for what seems to be lower quality footage in the beginning and the very tight vignetting on some cuts. Otherwise as a whole is really working. I have to watch a couple of time to get the poem, I think because of her accent mostly.
  • MariaNYC plus 1 year ago
Thanks Mo. I actually tried to uploaded a 200meg file since yesterday (well Thursday)- on that version you could see the patter of the rain and the fence quite clearly - I had to reduce the resolution of the file as it would not make conversion due to all the hoopla going on here. As for the vignette I purposely did odd slanted sized- can you let me know which ones you feel don't work? I want to recut her vocals and remix them I cut some areas too close together. I think I will put her words up...
  • moriza plus 1 year ago
The slanted tight vignette like on 00:50 to 00:55.
  • MariaNYC plus 1 year ago
lol ok I knew it would be the slanted ones - I feel iffy on those images lol OK thanks I appreciate it.

I really do like this video, but I don't know why.

One thing that I do know is that water fascinates me, I love reflections and light, and your techniques have their parenthood entrenched in love. When these qualities combine, as when crafted by yourself, the result is an art form in its own right.

In this instance, I can view this video and appreciate the presentation without having to create a novel in order to express my thoughts.

Trust me Maria, bullshit is definitely not on my menu, life is far too short for such a time-wasting activity, what you read in this comment is what I genuinely feel.

May your board keep clapping, and your reels never be still.

    Best regards.
  • MariaNYC plus 1 year ago
lol thanks The reels shant be still. Today while taping a rusted birdbath in a community garden I was told to stop filming the public "art" and put my camera away. All the more reasons not to stop.
