I once had the honor of seeing JChap recite Pi to about the 200th digit with no musical accompaniment on a stage in front of about 1,500 people holding paper programs following along to correct him if he made an error.

He did not make an error.

The crowd erupted.

There were pyrotechnics involved.

I got immensely bored once and memorised it to 30 digits and thought that that was impressive. This - well this is just brilliant. Good work. Also good work on bringing to my attention the existence of pi day!

i once told my freshman math class that we had a pop quiz for extra credit, on the digits of pi. so for like 5 minutes before the teacher got to the classroom, everyone was furiously scrambling to memorize the damn digits.

then class started and i laughed at everyone.

When I taught here in NYC, I HATED teaching pi. We would spend like 2 weeks just trying to conceptualize it; this would have made it much more fun.

Still no news on Akira Haraguchi, a 60-year-old man from Japan who recited Pi from memory to 83,431 decimal places from Friday, July 1st 2005, to Saturday, July 2nd 2005, and to 100,000 decimal places on October 3rd 2006 to set an unofficial new world record. These performances have never been verified, so they are still unofficial.
