Introducing Ubiquity for Firefox, and experiment in connecting the Web with language. labs.mozilla.com/2008/08/introducing-ubiquity/

Ubiquity's goals are to:

Empower users to control the web browser with language-based instructions. (With search, users type what they want to find. With Ubiquity, they type what they want to do.)

Enable on-demand, user-generated mashups with existing open Web APIs. (In other words, allowing everyone (not just Web developers) to remix the Web so it fits their needs, no matter what page they are on, or what they are doing.)

Use Trust networks and social constructs to balance security with ease of extensibility.

Extend the browser functionality easily.

It's about time we start thinking of integration. Reminds me a lot of spotlight on steroïds. Keep on the good work. Would be fun to eventually avoid typing altogether. Say "Map this" rather than type it. Alternatively have basic commands associated to icons. I confess I'm definitely lazy. ;)

Glad to see this demo, as I've been reading about Ubiquity, but haven't seen a demo yet. This was perfect! It seems quite useful too, so I'll have to try it.

this is such a cool enhancement for the web. We built an add-on which enables you to specifically search for people related data by typing "people search" - you might want to try that out on 123people.com

    hope you guys like it

Just blogged about this. Basically, it's the future.

@tim castle: since most people have not been exposed to the idea of the command line, how do you know it's beyond them? I'm old enough to have seen people not understanding how to use a mouse ya know...

I can't tell you how much I 'loved' ubiquity. Yup past tense. since 0.1.2 I don't dare update. I have a later version on my work machine (a Mac) and my home machine (Win XP) is 0.1.2. But at work it is useless. It even disables my url bar in firefox! I check out every new version... If it would work I'd love it to pieces again.

"You should note that this wasn't possible before"

lol, nice. Yea I'm on board and plan to get involved. I love the Firefox/Mozilla philosophy: Internet for the the people, by the people. That personality and ant like structure of co-op shows in Mozilla and that should inspire us all.

This is basically an embedded version of Launchy (check this app out, keystroke launcher for windows with pretty much al of the functionality of ubiquity, but, at the OS level)
