My friend James is doing a degree in music technology and sound design, and one of his recent projects is to take a movie trailer, and redo the sound for it. This video is a few different clips of when I went to do a couple of the voice overs for him. James is a very busy guy, so I don't get to see him much, so it was really cool to spend a whole evening with him doing silly voices and trying to make sound effects (hence the hitting things with the umbrella).

The trailer he was redoing was for 'Once upon a time in America'.

Music: 'God is in the radio' by Queens of the Stone Age

(plus other assorted tunes James was showing me, but I don't know any of their names)

So your mate's doing "a degree in music technology and sound design." Easy life he's got. They didn't have degrees like that in my day. Bastard.

I'm not sure if that's the exact title, but that is essentially what he's doing. It's far from an easy life though, he's constantly working like mad just to meet the deadlines. There is a lot of work that goes in to editing and production.

It must be tough rolling all those spliffs, and those visits to late-night cake retailers must be hell.
I'm just slightly jealous, as you can probably tell.

Actually it wasn't a spliff. He was just rolling a cigarette. James doesn't smoke spliffs.

This video is a little unrepresentative - we spent about 4 or 5 hours working - and that was just for my few lines! We were quite hungry by the end of it, so just went to get a well earned cookie.

Apologies to your mate, although he must be the only person in his line of study who doesn't partake. I think my mistake was understandable, given the nocturnal cookie-purchasing scene. Anyway, your Dad's a vicar so you've got to forgive me.

Haha - apology accepted and forgiveness granted!

I don't blame you for jumping to that conclusion - I would have done exactly the same if I didn't know James.

You got that right Steve. Mathematics and Computer Science sucked.

looks like you had a wicked good time. I was floored by the amount of equipment in his apartment.

Don't take this the wrong way but, the most interesting things about this for me was seeing the inside of a Tesco's and how your beard is progessing.

See, for decades I've heard references to Tesco in virtually every UK tv show I've watched, but have no idea what they are or look like.

And the facial hair. You are getting closer to achieving FuzzyDavana, grasshopper.

Haha - well if I had known that I would have got more footage of Tescos and my beard! Tescos is pretty much like every supermarket though. Nothing too exciting.

As for the equipment - that was actually just a room he has in Reading for working. He's also a soundman for various events around Reading, so he's got the equipment from those events to use in his spare time.

HAH!!! And you said my editing was good...pffttt!! CAuse your editing was kickass on this! I loved it! Doing foley work is great huh? I do it, even when I have no film to do it for, ahhaah!!!

I love the creation of things like that, I need more work, or I'm going to shoot a rocket at my head! I'm moving to England!

    Thanks!

Yeah it was good fun doing it. I've never done proper voice over stuff before - only my amateur stuff on Vimeo - so it was interesting to see how it's done properly.
