4. Wild Beasts - Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants. …
1 year ago
This music video directed by OneInThree for 'Wild Beasts' second single of their debut album 'Limbo Panto' is a mesmerising & hypnotic tour de force. It pioneers an amazing mind bending visual technique called the 'Droste Effect' which is based on an uncompleted lithograph that Escher made in 1956. The maths behind the lithograph was so complicated that Escher was unable to finish the centre of the picture and so left it blank. OneInThree developed the technique from Josh Sommers code so that it could be applied to moving images. OneInThree did all the VFX themselves apart from a grade & online at The Mill .

Like zach gunter said, this reminded me of the seven nation army video. I really liked it but I found the ending a bit unsatisfying. Nicely done, nonetheless.

Love this video. You are geniuses!

How did you made this? Can you lift the curtain a little bit? My humble guess would be that you exported the video to a still for each frame and then applied the mathmap effect…?

I did see a video here escherdroste.math.leidenuniv.nl/index.php?menu=animation that uses this effect, but that is only on one image.

Hi, I really liked your video. Very nice transitions.
I was shocked to hear that there was another video with live Droste Effects.
I also did a videoclip that uses several settings of the formulla for a mexican band... I processed all the spirals in my computer, it was a 5 months journey. Hope you like it and care to comment.

Don't like to tell to you, because I rad how much work you put into this, but check this website: subblue.com/projects/droste. It just got a lot easier to achieve this effect, completely in after effects, with a new plug-in. I will always remember you as the one who made this by hand and probably inspired people to build this!

The Pixel Bender script has really opened up this type of work, but without excellent direction it usually comes out with a predictable result. Not in your case, excellent work!
