Hummingbirds!!

You too can (depending on what kind of region you live in) attract hummingbirds using a hummingbird feeder -

Kamala says: to boil up some water to kill any bad stuff. Then you mix in sugar. 1 Parts Sugar to 4 Parts Water. Some hummingbird feeder kits say to use food-coloring (red usually) to help attract the hummingbirds.

DO NOT USE FOOD COLORING!

It is bad for the hummingbirds. The color of the feeder is enough to attract them. Make sure also to change out the sugar water and clean the feeder once a week, otherwise mold starts to form and that won't make for a happy hummingbird.

2007

note: looks really good in quicktime.

My camera shoots at 60fps. I'd love to see what that would look like slowed down.

    Your still camera?

Here's an example of how it looks:

  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
Dalas, yeah that is really smooth. Aside from the resolution, but that 60fps stuff is way way smoother than the hummingbird slo-mo that is only at the ole 30fps. HVX! HVX!

that's fantastic! it almost doesn't look real.
  • Nath 3 years ago
yes, at first I thought it was cgi or something.

That's what I said when I first viewed the footage after I captured it. I love how one of the hummingbirds looks right at the camera.
  • Jake Lodwick 3 years ago
It looked like CGI to me, at first, because the bird's body is basically motionless, as if the animator were lazy. But it's just nature's efficiency, I think.

wow! is that real??? Amazing! What kind of camera did you use?
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
I used my Panasonic DVX100a. But I believe most video cameras can capture the same thing by just upping the Shutter speed (I used 1/2000) and shooting at normal 60i, which most (if not all) video cameras shoot at.

the fly away in the middle was the best. i always wondered if humming birds move so quickly and to them that's normal speed, do we move really really slowly to them? furthermore, does that mean they exist slightly ahead in the future?
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
oh yeah totally! They must be livin life in fast forward. imagine if they ate coffee!!!!!

    light speed

We don't have this birds in France and I'm always impressed by their beauty, and class. This birds were in fact the result of the research for the energy drink.

i have a Panasonic Pro AG-DVC30 3-CCD MiniDV. Still in the box. It intimidates teh hell out of me.
  • FuzzyDave plus 3 years ago
Oh! Forgot to say that I was blown away by the richness of the color and crispness of the focus -- even in slow mo.
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
Holy crap man! Open the box already!! I promise you'll have fun with it. It is basically my camera minus the 24p (film framerate) function and XLR mic input. In fact DVC30 has I higher shutter speed, 1/8000 i think. Mine only goes up to 1/2000. Open it open it!! Do some slo mo stuff.

You wont believe, this morning I smoked a cigarette outside and a real big bublebee came along and I thought to myself that a hummingbird video on vimeo would be a nice thing - and - You made my day!!!
    Thanks

Beautiful. I love how still they keeps their heads even though their bodies are moving so fast. They really are strange birds.
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
They are amazing birds. These particular hummingbirds seem really big to me. The ones I've seen in the past are maybe half that size and I've never seen them sit before. They are very strange, moving at 2 speeds, it is mind boggling.

The sound works very well with your impressive clip. We have the "Ruby-throated" hummingbird in North Eastern USA. I'm always amazed at the loud noise these small critters can make with their wings.
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
It is a very impressive sound. I really wished that there wasn't construction going on next door. I tried to get the microphone as close as possible.

I hope to learn a lot more about hummingbirds.

My folks recently purchased a home out in the country that and their new garden attracts lots of humming birds. I'm going to try to film them.

What do you put in the feeder? Sugar water?
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
Kamala says: to boil up some water to kill any bad stuff. Then you mix in sugar. 1 Parts Sugar to 4 Parts Water. Some hummingbird feeder kits say to use food-coloring (red usually) to help attract the hummingbirds.

    DO NOT USE FOOD COLORING!

It is bad for the hummingbirds. The color of the feeder is enough to attract them. Make sure also to change out the sugar water and clean the feeder once a week, otherwise mold starts to form and that won't make for a happy hummingbird.

Good luck and post some footage! Can't wait to see some clips.

I saw this back when but forgot to say how remarkable it was.

There's a camera called the Phantom that shoots at 1500fps. Haha, but seriously you did a great job with what you had.
  • Ian Lucero plus 3 years ago
Thanks. Phantom hmm... I will check it out. I really want to get a nice macro diopter lens first. But hmmm... yeah a nice hi-speed camera and macro. I'd be set.

I dig the photos of the set-up. Would be nice to see a montage in the credits, or something. I like that sort of behind-the-scenes stuff. Again, excellent work.
