This is directly influenced by the work of evanoah sea who is no longer a Vimeo member - he inspires me.

Just playing with my new cam trying out things like focus, exposure and what I can do with my editing program.

Shot all day Sunday Sep 7th, edited Monday Sep.8th

Thanks to Steven for helping me out on Sunday, carrying my camera bag, and putting up with my stopping a million times while we walked through the city.

This is my first time working in HD so I am still learning what the camera can do.

Camera: Canon HV30

Music: Aaj Mera Jee Kardaa - Sukhwinder Singh

i think it's fantastic. not sure why you hate it. i think it's great.
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
Thanks so much - I'm not done with it yet - I took 315 clips on Sunday so I want to re-arrange, add more to it and eventually make it slightly longer...maybe

I'm glad you like it though - your recent work is through the roof and I get inspired by that.
  • MariaNYC plus 2 months ago
maybe this is only a few minutes, or the beginning of what you want to say. perhaps what you want to get off your chest may need to be done in a few renders
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
many renders!! Ha! I've stopped hatin' and moved on to making it work - the journey is really the fun part no? I love doing this even if it is just a hobby!! I think learning to paint would be easier....hahaha!

Well I love the whole concept, of course, but I totally see what you mean about the rendering process having compromised the quality. I don't know what to say about that because I haven't begun to work with HD, but I can see that this is very different from other HD videos. But then, that could be just the difference between cameras, too, so I don't know.

All I know is that I liked it! And I was wondering if the shirtless guy caught you recording him!!? LOL! I love recording in public, but always feel so pressured to be discreet and/or stop filming altogether.

Anyway, loved it... so any improvement would just make me cream.

Well I thank you kind sir!

    I'm glad you liked it!

I'm not so worried about the overall picture quality after following Eugenia's guidelines but after rendering, these funny aberrations happened and I was like what??

Oh and the shirtless guy did catch me...hee!

You nut what you mean you hate this? lol I think you will say the opposite once you get a hang of a few things. this is simply splendid- I love so many of these shots, and I love how you used motion- sped it up and slowed it down- and panned the camera etc- if anything I would of had the shots with words etc just a few frames more not much though.

I do not know what you mean by flicker. if you want I can download it and you can tell me the specific frames. You did a great job but I knew good films would come once you got the goods.
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
Thanks so much - One place for sure where there is flicker is during the dirty pigeons - between 00:40 - 00:43 ish. It has shown up less here after uploading but you can definitely see it when I just play the source file on my PC. It really happens in a lot of places. I also noticed it in my LVF tour video.

Did you mean at the end where "Jungle" appears it should have been longer? I think you're right perhaps started sooner and lasted longer and that shot is kind of long anyway.

Thanks so much for your advice. I will unlock the file so you can download.

    :-)
  • MariaNYC plus 2 months ago
no i didn't mean the word jungle- let me download the video to give you the frame shots. Vimeo frame counter sucks it's always off.
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
now i see what you mean about anything with words on it - i will stretch those out a frame or two - my Mom just emailed me and she agrees with Maria - I love my Mom!

The second to the last shot at around 1:29 - I don't like it there - should i move it to the fast paced stuff? I don't like how it connects with the last shot - it's just there and disappears and looks wierd....oh the toil!! never ending......thanks again for all of your help!!

    Thanks - will do!

The flicker as well as the flash is caused by a combination of two things- the transition of going from a dark frame to a light one - as well as the cross dissolve that occurs during this transition. This is actually a technique and an occurrence embraced by experimental filmmakers. I for one like it. So think fast moving image from dark to light = flick& flash
The pigeon shot 00:43 it looks to me like the beginning of a cross dissolve- if you go to 00:44 you see the shot of the trash? stop on the frame where it becomes white. That is the shot making the so called aberration. The shot is actually over exposed. I am not sure which is making that - the tape or the camera. When you turn on the camera let it roll for 5- 7 seconds as the instructions in the manual tell you to do so- this lets the camera's lens (the eye) adjust to the light conditions.

As for the HD taking so long to render. I know you are not used to this. well know this- HDV takes 4 times as much room- the resolution is higher than video- and so is the frame- much bigger, so you got yourself more real estate and so, rendering takes longer and therefore taxing... lol
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
I think for this vid at least i don't mind the things that are happening but just don't want this to effect my other work. I am taking into consideration all that you have said - you are fabulous - can't wait to meet you sometime!!

The trash shot is also an effect added afterwards called glow I think - I just wanted it hotter looking. I tend to dump a lot of canned shit here and there ;-)

  • MariaNYC plus 2 months ago
Shot 00:49 the taxi cab fades to white- is that an effect you placed? It happens again on shot 1:17 fades to white
Shot 1:24 "Make love" I would hold that for two frames instead of one frame, same for 1:26, 1:27, 1:29
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
Thanks so much - I love your advice!! I'm going to play some more with it in a day or two - sat with it too long yesterday so I can't "see" it anymore - you know?

and yes that flash effect is added a few time throughout
  • MariaNYC plus 2 months ago
ahhh it is an effect as I thought- OK great! remember you can always go back to your timeline and study the particular frame this is occurring and see what effect and/or transition you have on there which is causing all this. I really like this and like I said, once you get used to the workflow in HD and with the HV you will be pumping them out in a jiffy!
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
I hope so - whew!! You were right about more real estate thing - now i just need a gardener(editor/renderer) to take care of the pain in the ass stuff for me....ha!!
  • MariaNYC plus 2 months ago
hahaha you an me both- I'll take a cleaning crew to tend to my drive, a few maids to make the bed and dishes (my real bed/dishes lol) and also to set up my sequences and settings let's see- oh someone needs to definitely do the conforming to 24P... ;-)

this is wonderful, my friend, so don't be hatin' on it :)

in regard to the editing/rendering stuff, what maria said. i told you this before, but you have an editor's eye, so just kep shooting and experimenting. and invest in a really large hard drive, preferably a raid set-up that an handle the hd workflow.

why are you still reading this when you should be out shooting more!
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
    Ha!
Thanks Leslie - I do need to get that hard drive this week or my PC will just croak!! New to HD and cannot fricken' believe how big the files are for something so simple as this little vid - whew!
    Having fun though

I've stopped hatin' on it now - just after pre-editing it yesterday I'm looking for more - Maria has given me some great advice which i will put into play in a day or two - I just can't look at this vid for a bit after sitting with it for hours yesterday - i need new eyes..... ;-)

Ok, truth be known - I didn't take the time to read everyone else's responses/suggestions because I'm lazy, so forgive me if I repeat anyone, but:

The only flicker I noticed was during the one shot with the pigeons at 00:43. I assume you're using Final Cut. Are you using plug-ins to achieve your cross-dissolves? If that's causing you problems, you could always crossfade the old fashioned way by using the pen tool to create handles at the end of the one clip and the beginning of the other and manually fade them.
I noticed that you mentioned that you thought it looked too 'pretty' also. That might be due to the color grading. If you played with the color correction tools, contrast, gamma, etc, you might be able to find a darker, richer color that you're looking for. Even if you don't know what the numerical values do in anything, it's always worth playing around.

All in all, I'm willing to bet money that the reason you hate this so much is because you're putting so much time into it at once. I guarantee if you let it sit for a while and give it another look later on, it won't be so bad. I don't think there's anything bad about it.
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
    Thanks so much Christopher!

I will let it sit for a few days and come back to it - I don't have "eyes" for it anymore.
That's one of my issues in this lifetime - I want it all at once so patience is a trying thing for me.
I have changed a few things today since you saw it and will upload it and keep trying to find what I'm looking for. Only using Vegas 9 at the moment - a good friend gave me CS3 and AE as a gift and will switch to that at the end of the year.

Thanks again for your advice and input.

Dan, I'm impressed ! I know nothing about HD and Final Cut so i'm sorry I don't have any tips for you..All I can say is I love it and I really can't wait to see more !

All you have to do is insert a couple of quick shots of yourself staring moodily off-camera, and you've got yourself the opening sequence for a gritty NY-based drama... Dan Houston in "Jungle" - Thursday 9pm on NBC...

(maybe I watch too much TV)
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
    Hahahahahaha!

Staring moodily off camera - that would be me! What an ugly drama it would be!

    HA!

This is perfecto! All it reallly could use is a shot of yourself singing into a Soap-On-A-Rope in your shower :)
  • Dan Huston plus 2 months ago
Thanks - I'll be sure to insert that - ha!

    soap coming soon!

This was really well done. It sounds from the comments that you've made some changes. I'm sorry I haven't watched this earlier. I've had it open since you shared it, but I haven't had the time needed to give you the advice you sought. I think that you've listened to all the other comments and turned this into a great piece.

btw, why'd evanoah sea leave? If you know and don't want to put it here, you can message me. I didn't get to say good-bye.
