Steven, you've had an awakening. The Letus has become very instrumental for you. Imagine what a small airship could do?

I have a question Steven. Can you ever make a flop? I'm just curious. Very well done. Fascinating, your choice of shots, and execution. You have a wondrous eye which leaves nothing to chance. It captivates, motivates, and stimulates. I'm anxious to see what you could do with a serious narrative.

Love the font choice and color. And the use of balloons. Your like a sniper with your color choice. That's pretty rare.

Very nice. Although I must say, I've watched that damn parade video a thousand times for some reason. Too damn cool!

    Cheers.

Awesome Steven! Great to hear. I can't WAIT to see that! As there is definitely a significant difference between the two styles. Mainly because what you do hear, the films you create are more documentary driven than feature narrative shooting. So I am VERY interested with what you do with capturing emotion, action, movement, and the contrasts that are layered within a character driven story. Can't wait!!!

With that said, I know you will bring your unique style and passion to the project, and have no doubt! it will be a success!

    Go gettem' Steven!

I enjoyed it, especially the quick clips that incorporate many of your other pieces. As always, I enjoy your work. The piece reminds me of a quote my father used to recite " The stump I saw was grey. The stump she saw was lavender, amber, and rose".

Usually your pieces are very clean, avoiding heavy effects. In this one, especially around 0:25 -0:43 you added several effects to the images. What effect/emotion were you trying to achieve by burning a shadow of the fallen package on the screen before it fell?
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
The notion of being lost in time. The anticipation of the package falling before it fell. I didn't spend a lot of time on this so it may have missed the mark for most people.
  •
  • Roger H. Shealy 4 months ago
I found the package and the ensuing "burn thru" a little distracting. I'm kind of neutral on the greying on the following shot.

I loved the quick clips. I've tried that one and never had enough varied content with great shots to keep it going long enough.

How do you balance using effects you personally like and those you think the viewer may not like on a piece like this?
  •
  • Roger H. Shealy 4 months ago
I didn't word that last part very well. Do you find yourself ever using a shot or effect that you really like, but know others may not like it as much...and still use it? In a more blunt way, are you creating for what you know your audience will accept or what you yourself feel needs to be produced?
  •
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I'm not big on effects at all, actually, and if there was a different way to tell it, I probably would have opted for that but I struggled somewhat to convey the idea visually. The effects used here were used with only me in mind. I really don't care what other people think when I'm making these films. They are the purest form of expression I have in my life so it's quite a solitary art for me. When I look at this film, it feels right and finished to me. I rarely go back and rework my stuff. I simply must move on when I feel like I have exhausted all creative energy.
  • Roger H. Shealy 4 months ago
I'm so glad you gave the answer you did; that makes it art!

I've had this really great time the last 12 months studying great inventors and artists and they all share one thing...their work follows their internal compass.

Thanks for keeping the new stuff coming!

By the way, I think you are from Seattle. I've had some great times nearby in Mulketeo.
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
Yes, I live in Seattle. In fact, I did a short at Mukilteo that's one of my favorite films. It's only available on my DVD....hey, I have to leave something on there that hasn't been seen :)

    Thank you...here you go:

    The Remarkable Gift

    When I was born
    I received a gift
    Its value has varied
    Over the years

    I squandered it with worry
    Anticipating the future
    Regreting the past
Unable to stay in the moment

    So when I witnessed
    Something special
    I was not present
    to that moment of awe

    My busy mind
    Would lower a gray veil
    Like a fog
    consuming craggy mountaintops
    Until all was gone

    One day, I looked through
    The lens of a camera
    and saw time standing still
    Everything I had missed
Was there on this tiny screen

All of a sudden I could see
    My life perfectly composed
    Focused and framed
    Exposed for the first time

    I grabbed the camera
    And began capturing everything
    Every color, every feeling
    Every moment in time

    How could I have missed
    All of this?
    It was never there
    Yet it was always there

I recognized this as a gift
    And practiced every day
    Until I needed the camera
    No more

how do you get such deep blacks??
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I use a levels adjustment in Premiere CS3 (it's available in whatever NLE you use) and push the black level just to the point where they begin to crush.

    Wow, thx.
Just the way i feel it, but never did understand myself.
Seeying this video, and hear you speak, opend a door for me.
Now, i now, i am not alone, now i now why i am shooting al those images, its the way i see the world, and by looking back, it tels me where i go wrong or going the right way.

By looking thru my cam, i see a world, i have never seen before, its was there, always, just waiting to explore his beauty to me.

    Onley strange thing is.....
that this video makes me aware off it...

    Hi, Steven!

I've been watching your videos for months here on Vimeo and they pretty much alone made me buy the XH-A1, without ever having seen or touched one!

    Now to my question...
In this video I felt the colors were exceptionally strong: the redness in the mountains, the blue of the sky and the green of the trees. Have you here used your vividRGB and/or have you done any color enhancements in post?

And I remember you once mentioning that you use Aspect HD when you capture? You still do that?

    - - -

Now I just hope I could find some scenery that could match what you've done in all of your videos. You've definitely raised the bar for what one dares put up here... ;)

    Later, dude...

  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I am using a whole host of different presets in this film so I can't really tell you which is which. I boosted the color to give it more of a "Technicolor" look, like the old Disney films.

The first shot, balloon shot, and ending shots are all using my latest and most favorite preset called Panalook 2. It gives a better response than VIVIDRGB because it's not as biased towards red and the colors in the raw footage are much milder, giving me more leeway in post to boost.

Here are the parameters for Panalook2:

    Gamma: Cine2
    Color Matrix: Cine2
    Color Gain: -4
    CPH: 0
    Knee: Low
    Black: Stretch
    Master Ped: -7
    Setup Level: -1
    HDF: Mid
    DHV: 0
    Sharpness: -2
    NR1: Off
    NR2: Off
    Coring: 0
    RGN: 8
    GGN: 11
    BGN: 12
    RGM: 0
    RBM: 0
    GRM: 0
    GBM: 0
    BRM: 0
    BGM: 0

White balancing is crucial to get accurate colors.
  • Jörgen Korkman 4 months ago
    Hi!

Like so many others in this forum and probably elsewhere on the net, I have downloaded you Panalook presets along with vividRGB (which goes a bit towards red, yes!), etc. Thank you!

I think you achieved the look you wanted, the old Disney movie feel, in the titles as well. The colors really stood out and prompted my initial question.

If Canon hasn't realized this yet, they should at least send you a thank you in the form of some free stuff. I spent hundreds of hours over a half year period reading up on all the latest cameras and I was already "settling" for the DVX100 (which I LOVE!), because all HD cameras that could beat the DVX 100 were around EUR 7000,-. Stumbling across the XH-A1 and your videos less than two weeks before making that other purchase made me change my mind. Finally a camera that can achieve what I want for a price I can afford! Thanx Canon, Thanx Steven!

    =)

    great work !!!
aspect ratio and image size ?
what is your capture presets and which editing software do you use?
    thank you steven !
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
    Aspect ratio is 2.35:1
Image size is reduced to 1280x540 for this presentation
I use AspectHD by Cineform in conjunction with Premiere CS3 for PC

Very nice. Very touching, indeed. Congratulations. (but... the credits typography is awfull, sorry to say).
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I disagree but I appreciate the comments. The choice of font was to more emulate the Disney style films from the 1970s which gave a kind of whimsy to the whole thing and played into its fantastical subject.

It's not going to work for everyone but it works for me.

how did you create the score?
  • Steven Dempsey 4 months ago
I didn't create the score. It was a pre-made piece but I edited it a little to make it fit with my voice. I also timed my voice to work with the dynamics of the music. When all of that was done, I began to piece the visuals together.

Do you shoot all of your footage in your home town? Quite a variety of locations in each of your videos.
  • Steven Dempsey 3 months ago
Not exactly in my home town although a lot of it is shot in my home state. Olympic National Park is my favorite place although there are lots of other locations in this area also. Some of the footage is from Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Idaho, New Mexico, etc.
