Funny you mention the lip moving thing, cuz I believe one of the best advices I ever heard was if you want to speak good Japanese, don't move your lips. LOL. Japanese is a language that doesn't move the mouth around like some other languages.

If you got some direct questions or phrases you wanna say, ask me and maybe i can make a vid with close ups on my mouth. which could be gross.
  • whoa...i never noticed that, dude!

but i was just saying some sentences with and without forced lip movement, and it's so true...i sound so much more legit when i pretend like my lips are practically numb.

    nice!

Yeah, it's kinda crazy huh? If you watch Japanese movies, there is not a lot of crazy movement either...comedies and weird/wild characters might do it, but I feel the "normal" characters are pretty chill with the lips.

I get tinnitus quite badly sometimes, and as a result can't hear, so I too have to try and lip read. I had never noticed that Japanese isn't as expressive with the lips, but you're right! I'm glad I'm not completely deaf and trying to lip read Japanese - I don't think I would ever have the skills.

Does the tinnitus not drive you nuts? For some reason that constant ring bugs me more than anything.

Sometimes, definitely. I'm fortunate that it's not always that strong, so quite often I can ignore it, especially if there are other sounds e.g. music etc. When the ringing is loud though it does get really annoying. I've had various levels all my life though thanks to a string of ear infections as a baby, so I've kind of got used to it. I had blocked ears (like when you have a cold) for the first 5 years of my life. It was like when you put your fingers in your ears and speak, you can hear yourself really loudly. When I was five, they finally found the right medication and my ears unblocked. I got really confused and worried because everything became much louder, but my voice had suddenly become different and quieter. Now I just have the ringing which is annoying, but because I've had it all my life, I would probably find it really strange if it wasn't there!

  • nice update, sir! somehow i missed this one...think i was out of town.

have you ever thought about involving your son? could be fun to learn together...and i bet he'd impress you!

When I drove him to the sitters we listened together and he picked up some. Now I don't get the time in the car with him. I do try to say things to him in both English and Japanese but my vocabulary is still very limited,

  • also...what are you using to make these....iMovie?
  • beaglebot 2 months ago
iMovie it is. I should really figure out how to do subtitles. As easy as iMovie seems I never seem to have any time to work with it
