I recently discovered a game on the net called "Line Rider":
official-linerider.com/play.html

The basic idea is to draw a line (or several) and then press play. Then a small guy wearing a red scarf slides down your line(s) on a small sledge. I've also discovered that the game has quite a cult following, with many people videoing their courses for other people to see.

This is a course I made recently. It's amazing how just one pixel here and there can make such a difference.

Music: 'Return to Patagonia' by Lemon Jelly

Warning: This game is highly addictive, but fortunately it has a save/load feature so that you can come back to your prebuilt courses.

You're much better at this then me. I always crash quickly. Check out this site for some fun games.

Crashing's not always a bad thing. On this course, my favourite part is when I made it so that it juggles with him and his sledge seperately. I've seen people who deliberately split them up at the begining so that they can do whole courses like that!

It is very addictive - or atleast it was for me. I think now I've made this, I've finally satisfied my need to play it... for now!

When I showed the game to my son, he declared it "crap", and went back to his "Pirates of the Caribbean" PC game!

I love how the sledge slams his body at the end!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
It took a good twenty minutes or so making tiny little adjustments to get the timing right, and also to make it hit him square in the nuts!
  • trp0 3 years ago
That was very impressive to get the timing correct.

That's my favorite part. Great job!

I tried that game for about five minutes, and then quit because he'd crash and burn most often on the first hill I made for him. The little bastard!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Yeah, it took me a little while to work out that it's the sudden changes in gradient that he doesn't like. You can see on this course, some of my slopes are made of loads of lines, all changing the gradient by a small amount each. It makes it work well, but it's a pain the butt to draw!

    Incredible dedication.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Once I got the hang of it, it didn't actually take that long to make. It's really good that you can save your courses, because it meant I could spend five or ten minutes on it every now and again, instead of trying to make it all in one sitting. That would have been incredible dedication!

I like how you used the lines of varying slope to make smoother curves on the course. Some people have done some pretty amazing stuff with this game. I liked what you've done here.

reminds me of armadillorun.com/ which so needs some Vimeo love!

Edit: I thought I should mention that the only way in which I am affiliated with armadillorun is that I was addicted to it for about 3 months, no comment spam here. :)

  • haha! i made one where the track isn't connected and i love watching him fall or the sledge falling back onto him.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
It can be really fun if your in a bad mood to see how fast you can slam him into walls. That's partly why I made the ending like it is.
  •
  • THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!!

Buck, I've known about this game for quite some time and I have got to say that you EFFING impressed the poo poo out of me! Wow, way to go. You are my hero for the day.

Wow!!!! I've seen a lot of vids of people's course, and this one definitely kicks ass!!!! I love making courses that kills the rider, or well I pretend he is dying. Like launching him fromt he beginning, haha!!! I love doing that!

How did you record your desktop though, I always really wanted to do that, especially for Line Rider, do tell!!!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Yes, that is a tricky one, but it's a bit easier thanks to the invention of LCD monitors. Where as if you pointed your camera at the old cathode ray tube monitors, you would get an annoying flicker, LCDs are generally fine to video - and that's what I did - quite literally videoed my monitor. It still takes a bit of playing to get it right. I've found that if you make your room as dark as possible, and the screen as bright as possible, it works the best. You might need to play with your camera's settings as well. Also, I used a couple of effects in iMovie (a slight soft focus and increase in brightness). The results still aren't perfect, but I've found it to be a better method than free screen recording software, as that can often have a low frame rate and/or cause the program your trying to record to lag/become jumpy.
  • DrPiranha 2 years ago
Ahh...well, one month later, I find out your magic, I'm a little on the slow side. But thanks for the awesome info! I'm gonna try that!

i hate you for getting me addicted to it..i didn't get anywhere..keep falling off
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Yeah, sorry about that. I know how you feel - I was hooked for ages. The flag feature is really useful - you press it while the guy is sliding down the slopes, and then the next time you press play, he starts from the flag. I found it quite useful for getting the landing slopes right.

Dude that was so unbelievably rock n roll!!! FACT
mate i tried to make a little slide before looking at your vid so i know how long that must have taken you. What did the whole thing look like zoomed out?
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
This course really didn't take that long - however, I had been playing around with it for a couple of days before I started on this course, so I had gotten pretty good at it. I knocked this bad boy out in record time. I think I actually spent longer trying to get him to land in the right place at the end than I did on the rest of the entire course!

Zoomed out, it looks pretty much the same, just a bit more zoomed out haha. But yeah, it's not that much different except it's a littler harder to see what's going on, so it's not really worth it.
