I'm very curious about this camera. The D90 is entering realms that could change both the mediums of photography and videography as we know it. Can you retrive a hi res still from the video grab?
I've had many an argument with friends who are photographers about this subject and based on the fact that the mediums are mixing, eventually there will be one operator for both formats. Is this the end of either???
    Looks great.

Very interesting... a little (maybe a lot, hidden by Vimeo compression?) more clean than a Letus. I read that the sensor overheats after 5 minutes of shooting. Is this true? Also, how is the compression versus, say AVCHD or HDV?
  • Work Productions 5 months ago
I'm a fairly novice user of the camera, mostly using it for stills because the video portion is such a hassle if you're not using a tripod, you're following someone at multiple distances, and/or you demand good sound. Yes, the sensor does overheat after about 5 minutes (they even put a 'countdown' at the top of the screen for you). As far as I've gotten with the camera, the video is compressed to .AVI at the highest setting of 720p HDMI. It's impressive video, but it's not very versatile.

I've just recently started researching this camera. Fiddly to use? hmmm... i'll have to check your site. Either way, you got some pretty cool stuff out of it.

Zeiss is doing lenses for nikon mount ....
is this D90 use the sensor frame (almost 35mm film format sensor size) so similar to the RED (taking the compression factor of course ...) looking for it , or maybe the D5 canon ....

was that vignetting done in post?
  • Philip Bloom plus 1 year ago
    always!
  • Johnny Nguyen plus 1 year ago
yeah. don't know why i even bothered to ask... I think think its because its a new camera and some shots have more more pronounced vignetting.

Just a question? Can you focus on the viewfinder!!! or only in the lcd? Any gadget to fit to lcd? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm honestly not that impressed with the D90. I'm holding out for RED's stab at the dslr market:

    Good for you, Jacob!

But I am a part-time pro that plans to learn the ins and outs of the D90 as a great SLR for 12Mp stills, and also allows me to use my Nikkor glass to task for some video work. You can afford a Red? Great! But I can't, so I am among those (call me a "prosumer if you like) lauding the video functionality.
  • Jacob Lewis plus 1 year ago
Ouch. Hurting me with the sarcasm Mr. Barry...

I am led to believe that you did not read the article. RED's DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Capture) will compete within the same market that Nikon's D90 and Canon's 5D are in; yes, even in price. However, I do not believe it will be much competition. I have a feeling this "DSMC" is going to blow us away. Seriously, read the article. Whereas the D90 shoots 720p [and the 5D at 1080p], RED's DSMC will [most likely] shoot 2k or 3k! Not to mention the amazing RAWCODE RED codec that will be utilized: RAW editing, for video. Simply amazing.

I, also, cannot afford the RED ONE... which is why I am looking forward to this!
  • Inofaith 11 months ago
I hope RED lets us know something fast.
    I'm halfway into getting a D90.. but I'm affraid I'll regret it.
I have a D60 now, and shoot time-lapse and 3fps clips with it... It's obvious to me that I like the picture look... but to have it in motion. Lenses, control and HD. thats what camcorders can't and Nikon and RED can.

Heya Philip how about a 5D Mark II test now with a downloadable 1080p full glory version to boot! If Canon seriously wants to send a "hey take that Nikon!" then they'll send you a 5DII to play with!

How odd all this is. I would never have thought that a foto camera can be used such way in the video in reality...
  • Inofaith 11 months ago
Hollywood has been doing it forever. Only analogue.
The cams and lenses, dollys and seperate sound equipment is simply too expensive for semi-pro or home users.
When getting into photography, I think a lot of people get to know cinematography.
Nikon D90, Canon 5Dmk2 are the first steps to make it all possible in 1 device (except the audio part maybe).

...a lot of people are waiting for RED's answer to this.

I think the advantage to using a photo camera to shoot video of people is they won't react to it like they would to a big camera. The people on the bridge walked right beside you without looking at the camera - probably wouldn't happen with a normal video camera.

nice test. it seems like the d90 does a good job as long as it is being used for static shots. As soon as the camera starts moving everything starts to swim. It seems like the camera could have used a little more time in the oven, but for static shots, it does okay.

    Hello Phillip!

Quick question. Do you recommend this camera for shooting short films for a guy on a budget? or do you think i should take my money elsewhere and buy a different camera?

    Thanks!
  • Philip Bloom plus 10 months ago
i think buy a proper camera to be honest!

Sorry to bother you again :/

but i was wondering if the image was compressed by Vimeo or is that the way the image actually looks after being imported onto a computer?

    Great footage by the way!

LOL. I think Philip Bloom is a more than established cinematographer already. See his kit: http:/philipbloom.co.uk/about/kit/#more-94 and his imdb profile: imdb.com/name/nm2423275/
and of course the tag line on his blog "I've been making films for the past 20 years."
I apologize in advance if I misconstrued your post :-).

Great shots, you ever feel that you can shoot anywhere and people wont blink an eyelid because they think your just taking a photograph.

im shooting short film on this and im being very careful with its limitations.

    anyway great review and vid

I like your film a lot; beautiful! But different as other D90 video's.
Which editing software did you use and which filters did you apply?
Or is it the lenses you used?

    Like your T-Shir... Genius!!!
Perfect visuals, perfect color, perfect sharpness...
poor Exposure-Lock jajajajajja... but thats a problem of the D90 doesnt mather.

    Wich lenses did you use?

Don't like it at all, and I have Nikon D80 and D3
But I think the Canon D5 Mk2 is far far better, but not as good as an EX3.
