Metamorphosis is programmed entirely in Processing, it’s the follow up to my Music is Math video. I developed my ‘zeno’ animation system a bit more to allow for nebulous additive blending as well as a few other things. The music is by Boards of Canada again - the track ‘Corsair’ from the Geogaddi album. Further info on this video at butterfly.ie

Glenn, you must stop the insanity! Your processing work is just amazing and so humbling to the rest of us :) I love the addition of color, although I think the Music is Math soundtrack flowed better with the visuals... gave it a much different feel. Great job on the nebula effects etc. BTW, how long does it take for you to render this?

Very very cool... what type of processing application did you use? I use after effects alot but never attempted anything this epic !

Processing is the name of the program itself and it can be found here > processing.org/learning/books/

Top quality stuff. Great! The changing camera angles add interest especially towards the end but I expected a bit of more variety throughout. But then you'd need to change the music. So I guess its the "artists choice".

Will we get to see the sources? :)

    Thanks folks, answers to questions,

    - it took about 4 hours to render at HD
    - was made entirely using processing.org
    - i could have tweaked it manually to make it more intersting, but i like the fact it's 100% generative
    - i can just about understand my own source code, let alone others, i'm still a noob programmer believe it or not.

this was AMAZING! i'm really into video editing and i think making something like this would be a huge step forward for me. i downloaded processing...but i know virtually nothing about programming -_-' by any chance would you know a website or something where i could learn how to program? that would help me out alot! thank you

Very cool. I really can't imagine how you can get processing to create this. Good choice again with BOC music. The camera work is great if thats what I can call it? I still like the relative simplicity of Music is maths though.

Hey that really is a nice job, but I see that all your videos are about the tchnical acomplishment you achieve .. and they are great ... but I think you should try telling a story uing all these tools you've learned how to use.

Don't get me wrong I like this a lot, but I cant help thinking that it would be fantastic to ue this knowledge in order to create some kind of animated short .. hope you do it someday.

It certainly looks cool. Is the audio actually being used to generate the visuals? If it is, I couldn't really find a link between them.
  • Glenn Marshall 1 year ago
no, visuals independent of audio, i try to let the viewer make connections themselves.
  • Michael Lander 1 year ago
That's cool too. Would it be possible to do something that got generated from audio? I'm thinking of downloading processing and mucking around with it. Actually, I did download it, but then I discovered I needed the java SDK and not just a java vm. XD

The best thing in the computer is the fact that you can visualize your feelings as they are. You don't have to make something that's similar to the feeling you felt or the life situation you were in while making the ART!
    Thanks for this :)

Super beautiful. I think it's totally fine to explore these sort of nearly-abstract visuals without a narrative.

There are a bunch of illusions you're using here, very successfully: you've created an illusion of depth (with the sizes/layering), an illusion of a larger environment (with the complexity of the fog), etc.

I think the only thing that feels "off" is the direction-swapping of the butterflies. It's a little too discontinuous compared to everything else.

Is this meant to be a stereogram video or somehow 3d?
I just watched this like when you watch a stereogram and you can see the 3 or 4 levels of focusing in the video.

Or is it maybe that i'm just too high to watch a truly awesome video? :)

There is something that I had'nt understood.
You said that the rendering took 4 hours.
But as I know, Processing is a real-time only environment... Am I wrong ? :)

    Keep going up !
  • Glenn Marshall 1 year ago
thanks, it can run in realtime if you want depending on the spec of your computer and how complex the graphics are, in this case i wanted high end graphics and detail, which takes a little more time.

One addition... flapping the wings in a sporatic and high FPS manner. As if the wings were recorded at like 200 FPS or something insane. Otherwise they look like leaves to me, still very cool, and I wish I had the time and knowledge to do that. That would take me an insane amount of time to do in AE (if I could even do it).
