This was quickly shot (as I was passing) yesterday evening after the unveiling, earlier in the day, by Prof. Stephen Hawking, of the newly designed Chronophage clock,at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. This is an amazing sight, and is a very unusual creation and timepiece. This "snapshot" was more or less thrown together and was taken in complete darkness, with only the light from the Chronophage encasement available. Again, using the HG10 (in Spotlight mode, with three clicks down on manual exposure). Barely colour graded, this is more or less how it looks to the eye.

I had a look a the article - very interesting.

Your video and music choice 'captured the time' nicely :)
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
Ooh, I bet that took a second or two to think up, lol. Thanks, Rico, didn't have much time to shoot this, but the clock is really interesting, so much more visually impressive at night.

lol, hope you're OK, Marion, didn't mean to scare you too much, it was certainly dark and unusual.

Oh wow - you top bloke, I was only reading about this on the BBC News site at lunchtime and the accompanying video that went with the report was not available (as I'm in Ireland at the mo') so I was a bit bummed out at not getting a decent look at it, and here you are with some footage. It's an incredible piece of clock making - over a £million and 5 yrs to make, only accurate once every five minutes though but hell worth the wait eh?! ;o) Superbly serendipitous of you Greg for shooting this, (damn fine short btw too) - love the music, really gives it the heeby jeebies, kinda Alien meets Fabergé isn't it?

BTW Greg, how the hell does one 'just' pass by Corpus Christi eh eh ;oD Very Noel Coward of you 'Oh yes darling I was just passing as they unveiled this enormous medallion, cant think what it was all about dontcha know'

    ;o) Brilliant job!

Such nice comments, thanks so much, Adam.

How was I just passing? Well, literally that. (Unbelievably I'd read about this earlier in the day but had completely forgotten about it till I got to Cambridge!) I was out to test the low light capabilities of my HG10 and literally walked past a small crowd of people as I strolled in to the city centre, saw the Chronophage, went "wow!", and took some shots. As I only live 30 mins away, I'm often to be scene wandering around the streets, there's so much visually on offer there.

Alien meets Fabergé? What a perfect description, yes.

Hey, Avey, thanks. Those colours at night are simply stunning, I just had to stick the cam on the tripod and start shooting.

If H.R. Giger builds a time piece, this is how I imagine it would look like - thanks for sharing :)

It's so different, isn't it? You enjoyed watching it? Great news, and thanks.

Excellent shot, it's a good thing I watched this in daylight as I would have s*** me self!!!
Spotlight mode is pretty good and far easier to get to work than the photo button trick. I see I'm gonna have to raise my game just a little more now Greg. Top quality stuff.
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
Ha, ha, not a pretty sight, I'll bet. It does appear a bit freaky with close-up shots, I agree, but in the flesh (so to speak, and without wishing to disturb you further) it's quite magnificent.

Spotlight mode works pretty well, just you don't know quite how wide the aperture is, but it can't be far off fully open, and I reckon the photobutton trick is a little overrated, myself.

    Thanks for your comment, Woody.

HOLY CRAP ! Crazy stuff you folks build over there - and a great video. Really sat me on edge . . .
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
Crazy it is, yes, Rick. This came out very dark and moody, partly because there really wasn't much in the way of ambient light and partly because I was trying to minimize noise from the cam. Cheers!

Wow! This turned out really great with such little light. Looks like the art of Giger.
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
Glad you liked it, Clan. Yes, it does look a little Gigerish, definitely a very neo-gothic look.

  • Yes thats the way, get inspirit with everything! Keep up the good work! I really love the music!

And to think I live in Cambridge and haven't even found the time to go and see this. £1m worth of clock, I believe?
  • Greg Wallis 1 year ago
Yup, and five years to build. Just pootle along King's Parade and you can't miss it. Dr John Taylor has seen this vid and asked for a copy, which is rather flattering.
  • NeverOffside 1 year ago
Will do, tomorrow in fact! Nice compliment from Dr Taylor :)

The finest post-modern amalgam of science, technology, art & music that I've ever come across .

Chris, that's just so incredibly kind, and probably far off the mark, but thank you anyway.

I'm now taking the time to watch the rest of your so far excellent portfolio. I found this quite mesmerising. Such well chosen music as well (I'm going to look on iTunes for Malek Trey who I'd never heard of before). I think this piece is a real lesson in simplicity showing just what high standards you can achieve in a relatively short time. Quality not quantity here. I'm compelled to watch it again. Well done.
  • Greg Wallis 9 months ago
Thanks, Colin. It's a bit rough in places and I must underline the fact that I was literally walking past with my gear and decided to shoot some footage. The music, by Sigur Ros, is available for download from their site: sigur-ros.co.uk/media/

Interestingly, this film was seen by Dr John Taylor who commissioned the clock and I then got the commission to shoot the promo film. It's surprising how one thing often leads to another.

By the 'promo' film you mean you you've shot another one after this? can we see it anywhere? Spill the beans!
  • Greg Wallis 9 months ago
Yes, I have shot another one, but it's not available for general viewing, yet. If the client decides to allow this, then I'll definitely post a link. (It also has original music written especially for it.)
